ECW on Sci Fi

Tuesday 13th June 2006

"This is Extreme" kicks off Extreme Championship Wrestling this week as the head of ECW, Paul Heyman makes his way out to the ring. Heyman starts off by saying that this is a new era for ECW; this is the rebirth of ECW. Heyman thanks the majority of the ECW roster for staying loyal to him and he also welcomes Kurt Angle and Big Show to the land of extreme. He also says that over the next few weeks, more new faces will be brought into ECW. Heyman then invites 'The Champion' down to the ring, Rob Van Dam duly obliges and joins Heyman in the ring, but he is without the WWE Championship Belt. Paul says that just incase we didn't see RAW last night, Vince McMahon had stripped Van Dam of the WWE Title and that's why he doesn't have the belt with him tonight. But Heyman says that it doesn't matter, he calls for something to be handed to him; Taz gets up from ringside and pulls a bag from under the desk and hands it to Heyman. As Paul removes the bag he reveals a new look ECW World Heavyweight Championship, Heyman says that he knows how much this means to Van Dam. He hands RVD the belt and then announces Rob Van Dam as the new ECW Champion. The pair shake hands before Heyman announces that Van Dam will defend the title later against Little Guido. ECW goes to its first break on the image of Rob Van Dam raising the ECW Championship high into the air, much to the delight of the ECW faithful. [91%]

[Commercial Break]

When ECW returns from the commercial break, the last ever ECW World Tag Team Champions, Danny Doring & Roadkill are already in the ring, awaiting their opponents for the evening. Al Snow then comes out along with his tag team partner Stevie Richards. These four men put on a good tag team match to start off the new era for ECW, but it was the last tag team champions who got the victory after Roadkill pinned Al Snow following a big splash from the top rope. [76%]

As Doring and Roadkill celebrate their victory in the ring, the camera cuts backstage and we see the newest staff member of ECW, Max Bretos standing by with the 'Olympic Gold Medallist' Kurt Angle. Angle is asked about the rebirth of ECW and his goals in ECW. Kurt says that he is here to take on anyone at anytime in anyplace to prove that he is the best in the world and to also capture the ECW World Heavyweight Title. Angle leaves after he has made his intentions clear as ECW goes to another commercial break. [84%]

[Commercial Break]

After the break is a video, it shows Andrew Martin, better known by his ring name of Test. He is shown delivering the big boot to several people, including The Rock, Undertaker and others. A voiceover says that Test will debut in ECW next week and asks; "Are you ready to take the Test?" [71%]

The next match of the evening is for the ECW World Heavyweight Championship as the fiery Italian Little Guido challenges the champion Rob Van Dam to his first title defence. The match is very fast paced and Little Guido nearly takes advantage of interference from Big Guido but Van Dam kicks out of a pinfall attempt. Eventually Van Dam goes to the top rope, Big Guido tries to grab his leg but he is kicked off the apron, Van Dam hits the five star frog splash and retains his title. [77%]

Rob Van Dam is handed his belt, but before he can celebrate his win Big Guido gets back in the ring and clotheslines RVD. Mamaluke and Little Guido join in as all three men attack the ECW Champion. "Crank It Up" then sounds through the arena as Big Show slowly makes his way to the ring. Little Guido and Tony Mamaluke quickly exit the ring but Big Guido doesn't move, instead he turns and stares at Big Show as he walks to the ring. Show enters the ring and both men go nose to nose, however just as it looks as if they're going to go at it Big Show turns his attention to the champion who is just getting to his feet. Show grabs Van Dam by the throat and drills him down to the canvas with a chokeslam. The crowd lead with a chorus of boos as we go to the final commercial with Big Show looking down at the fallen ECW World Heavyweight Champion. [80%]

[Commercial Break]

Back from commercial and a man is in the ring, he introduces himself as Matt Striker. Striker is dressed in a beige suit which is never a good start in ECW. He addresses the crowd, putting down the original ECW; he says that he is here to bring the bit of culture and class that ECW is seriously lacking. Before he can continue, the music of The Sandman hits as the cameraman frantically tries to find out where he's coming from. He finds him as Sandman descends through the crowd with his trusty cane. Matt Striker stays inside the ring even when Sandman enters; Striker tries to talk to him but gets caned over his head for his troubles. He quickly rolls out of the ring and runs for the back as Sandman chases him, swinging his cane along the way. [74%]

After The Sandman chases Striker through the curtain the main event for ECW this week can get started. Tommy Dreamer faces the man he defeated in January 2001 in an 'I Quit' match, CW Anderson. Both men give it their all to try and make the first ECW main event one to remember with a great brawling style. Tommy gets the victory after CW had him up for a spinebuster but Dreamer countered with a tornado DDT to get the count of three. After the match Tommy stays in the ring as an ECW chant echoes around the building, ECW ends its first television broadcast in over six years with Tommy Dreamer celebrating his victory. [74%]

Segment One
Not entirely crazy about RVD just getting handed the ECW strap. I realize it happened in reality and RVD was already WWE Champ, but there are more interesting ways this could've and should've been handled. Not saying a 32-man tourney or anything, but it'd be very "ECW" of them to hold off on strapping RVD until he was screwed out of the WWE Title. Almost as if to say ECW wouldn't stand for such injustice against their own or something. That said, if a guy's getting handed a free belt and has to defend it right away, he sure as hell should "earn" it in that match. Little Guido's just not the caliber of wrestler to make or break a top champ really. Beating him means nothing whereas RVD should be all about making the title something. Points for realism I suppose, but... well, we're started.

Segment Two
I think tag champs are a bit much for such a small brand. I get the philosophy behind Doring & Roadkill as your first champs, but again... better ways to handle this. Most wrestling handbooks give champs 30-60 days to defend their belts lest they be stripped. These guys are running on like five yeeears. Anyway, Snow and Stevie just got trotted out to job which is okay, but again, does nothing to establish the titles or champions as anything close to important.

Segment Three
Kurt wants the belt. Got it.

Segment Four
Test is coming. Got it.

Segment Five
Guido putting up a fight is a bit of a surprise, though the write-up doesn't suggest anything more than "non-squash" to me. Big Guido interfering doesn't even work as RVD's so far out of both these guys' league it's not even that funny. Once again, I call this match into question as RVD/Angle would've been a perfect fit in this position, even if you're building it for a PPV. Gotta get viewers somehow...

Segment Six
Big Show's shanghai on RVD is a fun little spot. The FBI's involvement in this is a little lame, but at least you're presenting an array of challengers for RVD's not-yet-established title. Realistically, Show should've done like Angle and put the belt over in a promo here, but I'm confident that'll be coming... unless there's another reason TBS attacked RVD?

Segment Seven
Aaand Striker's a jobber. Cue Sandman. Fun "authentic" ECW stuff there, although the afterglow of Sandy's ECW stuff was really kind of off-putting to me as a long-time ECW viewer. He was never the mythic figure he became in WWE's ECW and took probably as many cane shots as he doled out. Still, this is fun follow-up to the Eugene segment from PPV.

Segment Eight
I have no idea why RVD and Guido didn't main event over this match as Big Show's chokeslam would've been a much hotter out than Tommy celebrating a duh-hoy victory. It's definitely not a top angle, unless Tommy is to be established as a main event player pretty soon. Once again, the write-up only goes as far as to say "non-squash" although all the matches were competitive no-brainers (minus the tag title match which realistically could've gone either way).

In Closing
As for as your matches go, they're all pretty much star/midcarder vs. jobber and turn into even contests culminating with the ending you'd expect. The problem is that, taking a match like say Val Venis vs. Bradshaw, and applying that logic... it could mean different things based on the time period. In 1997, Val would easily be the favorite over Bradshaw as he was being pushed as a single while Bradshaw was a New Blackjack. In 2007, however, we'd get a very different result. Just saying "they had a well-fought/great/hotly-contested/etc. match" doesn't say enough about what you're trying to establish. Lines like "both men give their all" is kind of implied really as one man's all is far more than another man's all given who he is. I'm not suggesting play-by-play or even longer write-ups, just a clearer focus on the purpose of the match is needed.

Aside from that, the format's a breeze to read which is always a positive. The title scene should sort itself out in time and you've got a lot of options in lining up challengers for RVD. Right now, it's following the lines of what the actual new ECW did, but I'm sure you'll deviate from that path before long and begin fleshing out your own distinct story. Best of luck in doing so. Hope these comments help. :)

Saturday 17th 2006

:: The first ECW show on the Sci Fi network was expected to get a good viewing and that’s exactly what happened as ECW drew in a 2.6 rating. This puts it as one of the top shows on the network at this time which can only be a good thing for the rebirth of ECW. Sources backstage feel as if the show came off well, Vince McMahon is keen to try and tone down ECW while still keeping its hardcore audience. Paul Heyman has got the main say on what goes on in ECW, but he is being watched closely by Vince and many feel as if Vince is waiting for Heyman to make mistake.

:: Big Show’s heel turn was something that was down to happen as soon as he was drafted to ECW; Paul Heyman was a big factor in this decision, feeling that he and RVD could do some good stuff together. The other ECW draftee, Kurt Angle isn’t too pleased about being drafted; Heyman is keen to push Angle as an ‘Ultimate Fight’ type character, with short and to the point promos and stiff matches. Kurt is okay on the idea but feels as if he could be doing the same thing on RAW or Smackdown.

:: At the start of the show, Paul Heyman mentioned new talent debuting over the next few weeks, but as we understand it; the plan is for the majority of developmental call ups to head to ECW and get used to working in the WWE before getting moved to one of the other shows. Heyman knew this was the plan when he was told about ECW so he has come to accept it but it’ll be interesting to see if some stay on ECW for long periods of time. One guy who is debuting on ECW next week will be Test; Test has been working dark matches since February and Paul is looking to push Test towards the top of the card.

:: The next time you can expect to see ECW on pay per view will be at SummerSlam where all three brands will compete. Vince is only looking to put one ECW match on the card, presumably for the ECW Championship, but Heyman is hopeful to add one more by the time August comes around. SummerSlam will be held on Sunday, August 20th from the Banknorth Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. There are rumours going around that ECW will get their own pay per view later on in the year, but at this time we don’t have conformation of that.

:: Incase you missed RAW this week; Vince McMahon stripped Rob Van Dam of the WWE Championship after the controversial ending to the main event at One Night Stand, D-Generation X reunited in the middle of the ring to take on the Spirit Squad, Mick Foley and Ric Flair exchanged punches, and John Cena defeated Edge after Lita got her boyfriend disqualified.

:: Smackdown went down like this; JBL made himself the new colour commentator of Smackdown alongside Michael Cole, Mr Kennedy continued his impressive run, Great Khali destroyed Psychosis and Super Crazy who exchanged words with each other after the match, and Bobby Lashley retained his US Title after defeating King Booker.

Cheers for the lengthy feedback C-Mil and I will endevour to use it. But I do feel as if I should state that Doring and Roadkill are not the champions, purely because I don't have the belts :P

ECW on Sci Fi

Tuesday 20th June 2006

This week “Crank it Up” from Brand New Sin starts us off as the 7 foot monster enters the ring to a chorus off boos after he viciously attacked the ECW Champion last week. Big Show laughs at the reaction from the crowd and challenges any of them to do something about it, many of them motion that they would but of course Show just laughs even harder. Show says that he didn’t come over to ECW to be a fun giant, he can over to ECW to be an extreme monster and last week he started by going after the ECW Champion. He says that he will be the ECW Champion and there’s nothing that anyone can do about it. Cue Rob Van Dam, the ECW Champion making his way out to the ring. Van Dam lays the ECW Title down on the mat and motions for Big Show to try and take it from him but before Show can move Paul Heyman comes running out to separate both men. Heyman says that they can forget about a one on one match tonight because they are both already booked in a six man main event. Heyman suggests that they go away and prepare for their match and he announces that two former ECW cruiserweights make their return tonight to the land of extreme and they will be facing each other in singles action right about ... now! [83%]

First out is the ‘Insane Luchadore’ Super Crazy and he makes his way to the ring. His opponent for this evening is a surprise, purely because they’ve been tag team partners for the past few months, to the ring comes Psicosis. As you can expect, both men use aerial offence for much of the match and Psicosis gets the victory after a legdrop from the top rope. After the match, Crazy is helped to his feet by Psicosis but instead of shaking hands, Psichosis levels his former partner with a sharp right hand and stands over him as ECW goes to its first break. [78%]

[Commercial Break]

When ECW returns “The Test That Stumped Them All” from Dream Theater plays and you guessed it, Test makes his entrance in ECW for the first time. But he’s not come alone, with him is a brunette that we haven’t seen before, they both get in the ring and she grabs the microphone from ringside. The woman immediately introduces herself simply as Sherry and announces that Test is her new client; she says that he is in ECW to be champion and will destroy anyone who gets in his way. She then puts out an open challenge for right now to anyone in ECW to come out and face Test. [76%]

Test stands in the middle of the ring to find out who is going to “take the test”, and the answer quickly comes out to the ring in the form of Balls Mahoney, he slides into the ring and Test quickly hammers away at him. Test dominates Balls for most of the match as Sherry shouts out encouragement from the outside. Test puts Balls out of his misery with the testdrive. After the match Sherry climbs into the ring and raises her clients hand as we go to our second break. [69%]

[Commercial Break]

After the commercial, Justin Credible is already standing in the middle of the ring as the remix of “Medal” plays and Kurt Angle makes his way down to the squared circle. Angle gets in the ring and Credible tries to gain the advantage but instead he gets suplexed from one corner to the next, Kurt dominates Justin with hard right hands and even more suplexes. Angle pulls his straps down and locks on the ankle lock to which Justin Credible taps out almost immediately. Angle doesn’t celebrate his victory, he just slides out of the ring and walks to the back, his job done. [72%]

When Kurt Angle disappears through the curtain, a video is played, this one shows images of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. We hear a male voice being played over the video. The man puts down drinking, smoking and drug taking, saying that wrestling is his drug of choice and that he is coming to ECW to make an example of these bad habits. We then see the man in question and he introduces himself as CM Punk and he says that he doesn’t need drugs to further his career, because he is straight edge. [77%]

[Commercial Break]

After the final break, a man is shown inside the ring, with jet black hair and a black full length coat. He is carrying a singapore cane and says that he is The Predator. He says that The Sandman likes to cane people and so does he, and he goes on to call out Sandman who wastes no time in making an appearance. Predator doesn’t move a muscle, he stands in the ring and watches Sandman make his usual entrance through the crowd. Both men face off with their singapore canes and Sandman offers Predator the first shot, but when Predator hits him, Sandman just looks at him with a sick smile and then unleashes with a fury of cane shots that send Predator out of the ring and out of ECW. [64%]

Up next is the ECW main event, Danny Doring & Roadkill come out first before being joined by Big Show. Their opponents then make their way to the ring with Tommy Dreamer being first, closely followed by Sabu and then the ECW Champion, Rob Van Dam. The match revolves around Van Dam trying to get involved while Big Show dissects Sabu and Dreamer. Eventually RVD gets his hands on Show but Doring and Roadkill distract him for long enough to allow Big Show to chokeslam the champion and get the pinfall. After the bell rings, Big Show gets the ECW Championship and raises it above his head while Van Dam is still out of the canvas as the show goes off the air. [73%]

Saturday 24th June 2006

:: This weeks ECW rating was 2.4, down on the 2.6 received for the show's premiere. Many expected this to happen, the first show was always going to push some people away with the new version of ECW being showcased. However Vince feels that in time, when everything is running well the viewing figures should steadily increase back up towards the 2.6 marker. The show itself wasn't much to shout about really, it focused around the apparent Big Show and Rob Van Dam feud aswell as the debut of more wrestlers in ECW. One of the said debuts was Test, he did a solid job against Balls Mahoney and Paul Heyman thinks that him having a manager can only help him get over as an effective heel.

:: Another man who made his debut was The Predator, who isn't expected to be a permanent feature in ECW just yet as he is still learning his trade down in Ohio Valley Wrestling. But one man who will be brought up is CM Punk; he is expected to be pushed straight into a feud with one of the ECW legends as he moves up the card. Heyman has his eyes on a potential feud with Kurt Angle, providing everything works out. Punk's gimmick isn't a gimmick and anyone who has seen him at work will know that, Punk never uses drugs, drinks or smokes and he can work effectively as both a face and a heel.

:: The main, or perhaps the only feud in ECW at the moment is the one over the ECW Championship between Big Show and Rob Van Dam. However there is a problem that is getting apparent, feud tend to end at a pay per view, the next pay per view that ECW is involved in is SummerSlam on August 20th and that's eight weeks away. With so much time to build one match and with such a small roster, there is a limit as to what Paul Heyman can do with the feud.

:: On RAW this week; Vince announced a WWE Championship tournament with the final being held at SummerSlam, D-Generation X dominated the Spirit Squad all show and also stole their tag team titles, Flair and Foley have a nice little debate and in the main event Edge, Randy Orton & Umaga defeat John Cena, Kane & Eugene, yes you read that right.

:: On Smackdown; Super Crazy and Psychosis came to blows again after losing to London & Kendrick, Khali destroys a pair of local jobbers, Gunnar Scott pins Finlay, Bobby Lashley loses the US Title to William Regal after King Booker interferes and Rey Mysterio retains the World Championship after Mark Henry got distracted by the music of Batista.

I like the attention of Doring & Roadkill to the ECW roster. I'm pretty sure they weren't around at the beginning of ECW 2... if I remember. Having them the other side of the "originals" is interesting too. It breaks them up nicely, and is totally different to the real-life version.

I'm not so sure about Shelly being paired up with Test. I'm a massive Test fan, so the idea that you are going to push him is always a nice thing to see... i just don't think those two "fit" together? Shelly has a different look from what I would imagine Test's managers to look like. But hey... I'll let you make it work.

CM Punk debuting is fine. His gimmick worked in rel-life, so if it ain't broke...? :)

Good job.

Why does "Ban MPH in '08" have to go on the end of each closed thread? Is closing it not enough or something?
