General Podcast Thread

We have a wrestling podcast thread but not, as far as I can see, a thread that is in anyway recent about podcasts.

So I put it to you EWB! Let us discuss what podcasts exists and whatnot. I'm spending a lot of time on buses lately so they're becoming a good way to kill time. The non-wrestling related podcasts I am listening to:

Go Bayside - April Richardson invites guests (including Chris Hardwick, Paul F. Tompkins and former WWE writer Jensen Karp) to discuss an episode of Saved By The Bell. Episodes run about 40 mins at most and it's usually one episode per-podcast.

Get Up On This - Every Tuesday Jensen Karp (former WWE writer/rapper/guy who runs a gallery), Matt Robinson (director of The Invention of Lying) plus a guest (they've had Maria, Colt Cabana, James Iha and lots of people) talk about things they believe more people should know about. Then once a month they switch and do Get Up Off This where Matt Robinson hosts and they discuss things people should stop doing. Lots of hip-hop gets brought up on it but also films, apps, books, tv shows and stuff.

Radiodrome - Josh Hadley, 'The Cinema Snob' Brad Jones and Alex Jowski talk about various topics to do with cult films and TV. Although Brad Jones is apparently leaving the show to do a new podcast and... He is kinda what makes it listenable...

Too Soon - Every week Stephanie Micklus has a stand up comedian on to talk about how they make jokes about terrible real life things that have happened to them. It can be a little bit... Harrowing, but it's interesting to hear stand ups talk about turning divorces or death or serious illnesses into comedy material.

Is he? Josh is incredibly unbearable without Brad being there making sense. In fact I'd say he's the worst type of film critic: the sweeping generalisations, the anti-mainstream shit, the horrible "things were better back in the good old days" way of thinking. Alex is neither knowledgeable or forceful enough to rein in Josh by himself.

Least to say, I'd follow Brad to his podcast and not bother with Radiodrome anymore.

Podcasts I follow religiously:

How Did This Get Made [Earwolf] - Paul Scheer and Jason Mantzoukas (FX's The League) and June Diane Raphael (various stuff) talk about bad movies they just watched and wonder how did this get made? Often times they have a guest on. This most recent episode they dissect Daredevil with guest, Daredevil comics writer, Ed Brubaker, who has a lot of insight on why certain choices were made in the movie.

Nerd Poker: Dungeons and Dragons [Earwolf] - Brian Posehn and friends gather to play Dungeons and Dragons and record it. Most recent episode has comedian Dave Anthony filling in for an absent friend.

The Nerdist Podcast [Nerdist] - Chris Hardwick, kingpin of the Nerdist empire interviews weekly guests. Having just finished Marvel Week, Hardwick most recently interviewed President of Production of Marvel, Kevin Feige.

The Indoor Kids [Nerdist] - A video game centered podcast by Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, typically with a guest to discuss a topic relating to video games. Most recent podcast with Tom Bissell and the evolution of how he played games over the last ten years.

The Writer's Room [Nerdist] - Ben Blacker hosts a panel of writers, typically carrying some common theme like Sitcoms or something to discuss the craft. Most recent episode - the writers and puppeteers of Seasame Street.

Bill Burr's Money Morning Podcast - An angry, tirading Bill Burr yells about random crap going on in his brain for 45 minutes and then spends 15 minutes giving comedic and/or thought-provoking advice to fans who write in in a Dear Abby kind of way.

It was worth repeating what Hobo said, Kong.

It really does. Hadley is a so terrible and Jowsky is a non-entity. At least when Jerrid Foiles was there he'd add something!

Admittedly, as far as I know without Hadley there would be no Radiodrome (Brad started it but Hadley took it over). I imagine an awful lot of people stop listening once they hear "Brad isn't here today..." - I know I do (unless it's an episode where Jillian or Diamanda Hagan fill in)

June Diane Raphael was on the most recent Get Up On This and they mentioned this podcast. I may have to check it out because it sounds like something I'd like.

These two sound awesome and I am currently downloading.

I listen* to too many podcasts.

*I download them and never get around to actually listening because I have too many.

A few good ones though:

The British History Podcast - Exactly what it sounds like. Dude who does it is actually American with an unhealthy appetite for British history. Starts at pre-history and moves on from there. Gets more interesting the more obscure he gets, focusing on a lot of side stories to the bigger picture at times.

Masters of None - Difficult to pigeon hole into anything other than "Comedy", but it is essentially a bunch of guys talking about random bollocks to do with that episodes theme. And if you love lists, this is the perfect show because they do a lot of them.

Slate's Spoiler Specials - Film podcasts are mostly dreadful because they are ridiculously long with a long of filler, but this normally is only 30-40 minutes long and aside from sponsor plugs spend the entire time talking about the film in question.

Frank Skinner's show on Absolute Radio.

The podcast takes the 3 hour Saturday morning radio show and strips out the music. He's becoming funnier and funnier as he gets older and is incredibly knowledgeable on loads of different topics as well as bringing the laughs.

I used to listen to all the older Adam and Joe podcasts (on XFM and BBC Radio). I have huge love for their style of comedy and must listen through to them again as they're brilliant.

The Bugle's superb, though I've not listened to it enough.

I used to listen to a lot of 6Music's podcast; Adam & Joe, Jon Holmes, Collins & Herring and Freakzone, mostly. Also Alex Lester's from Radio 2.

Nowadays, I don't tend to find the time, so I've not listened to any podcasts in months.

Yeah, thirded. It doesn't help that no matter if Brad is or isn't on the episode, Josh will usually spend a decent chunk of time offhandedly continuing to mention "Well, Brad is here, now people are listening" as if it's a damn shock that the guy with the super successful web show is the draw for the audience.

As for podcasts I'd recommend, I'll think about that for a minute. There's a lot of them.

Hamish & Andy is my favourite, it's just a comedy podcast by two Australian comedians who're friends, with a different subject every day. Generally worth a laugh during my bike rides too and from work.

The Bugle is funny political satire, but very intermittent with it's proper updates lately, which is the sure sign of a podcast nearing it's end of days.

Guardian football podcast is just wonderful and does what it says on the tin.

The Game Station/Polaris Podcast pretty much exclusively. No other ones have ever really captured my interest, outside of the old YogPods, but that hasn't been a thing in years.

Also Yoda and Me was fun for a while, it's been dead for a while now though.

The Attitude Era Podcast - May as well list them as it's the only wrestling podcast I listen to at the moment. Good fun, nice rapport between the three hosts. They review the matches excellently, one of the very few who analyse the crowd as much as the in-ring action.

Grizzly Bear Egg Cafe - Sometimes Quack and Clayton Morris irk me, such as the comment a couple of weeks ago that if a film isn't essentially a massive, dead-brain blockbuster it shouldn't be in the cinema, but they're still fairly listenable. Enjoyed their Summer of Trek series.

Kermode and Mayo Film Review - Goes without saying for any film fan.

Nerdist Podcast - I skip the ones of celebrities I don't know. Other than that, they get some fantastic interviews out of people. It's probably the first time I've ever heard Will Ferrell in a thoughtful, out-of-character context. Tom Hanks should guest every week.

Radiodrome - See the topic above (if you can get past my avant-garde framing). It's the podcast I skip if my 'to listen' pile adds up because Josh Hadley is unbearable. I also skip when Brad isn't on, which is fair enough considering he and AVGN are the only two Internet critics I still follow these days.

Slam Dunk Cinema - Cheap plug for my friend's podcast. I appear on it once every 6-8 weeks whenever I get my arse to Sheffield. I'm awful on it.

Oh man the 'How Did This Get Made?' on The Room with Greg Sestero is so damn good.

I came into this thread again because man - How Did This Get Made has been getting me through the more boring workdays so far. Every episode has something awesome in it, and then when you listen to ones such as the one for Birdemic... good lord.

If you haven't listened to the Danny McBride episode, I recommend it. The guy has profound understanding of the business for always playing basically the same obnoxious loudmouth idiot in every movie/TV show

I listened to the Crocodile Dundee 3 one on the bus home. Actually getting to hear from one of the writers of it was amazing.
