How To: Cut Worker Pics in GIMP

Great tutorial.

I tend to use a rather slapdash attempt myself simply using the eraser tool just because the quantity I have to get through its quicker to get through more pics, although I do rely on sites like PSD-Dreams for precut images.

I also personally tend to set my pics to 60% quality, because it seems to be the lowest level for a good quality image thats not really noticable in game, plus it means I can have 5,000+ for under 50MB.

PSD Dreams really is great for pre-cuts. As a web designer, I probably should be a little more observant of file size, because as you suggested, saving around 60% quality will drastically reduce the file size of an image pack. Good tip. I personally use Photoshop myself, but GIMP really is great if you don't have Photoshop or find yourself on a machine without it.

The way you do your border changes the size of the image a little, does it not? That's why I just use a PNG of the border as the top layer.

No, you're just painting over the inner two pixels around the edge of the 150x150 canvas. You could create a border overlay the same way.

I always assumed that when you went to make a border like that GIMP added the space around the image. Hmm. Nice to know otherwise.

What is the deal with it doing this? Both times I've tried I end up with a big triangle in the path.

in photoshop i know it has something to do with the pen tool you are using... you want it on path tool not shape tool and also it could have to do with the type of path you have it on... excluding overlapping secitions, including, subtracting etc... i am just using my memory from when I worked for a newspaper and had to cut about 1000 cars a week

I think I figured it out. Had something to do with messing up points. Still haven't got it down though anyway as I still end up with a slight outline of background around the person. I can't do that NAO image for anything, I keep messing up their heads. for the Madison image I had better luck using the select by color tool and the grow selection option but that won't work on anything not using a solid color backdrop.
