Have a giant bruise on the right side of your back today?

Actually, no -- which is weird! I am definitely sore from it at the bottom of my lats and a bit on my hip, but no bruising which was weird because the other new guy had a nasty bruise showing at the end of practice. I took to the ropes a lot quicker than he did, but standing up straight in a collar and elbow gave me a bit of trouble. It is so trained into me to try and get a wider stance so I can drive my hips from a low point for a throw or to take a leg in that situation that it will take some time for me to mentally retrain that instinct.

  3. So I am uh, starting pro-wrestling school today.

I've always really wanted to get into a ring. As you might have guessed from the fact that I've been posting on a wrestling board for over ten years, I love pro-wrestling. When I was a kid, winter in Maine was my favorite time because my brother Dean and I could use the deep snow to powerbomb each other and hit superplexes off our post and beam fences without fear of serious injury. We set up our dad's old VHS tape recorder on a tripod in 4 feet of snow and had some of the worst matches in history. In our heads though, we were on our way to being our generations Steiners or Hardys -- the great brother and brother tag team, brother.

We had big designs on getting into wrestling while we were in college but life threw us some curve balls. Long time posters will know that during our last couple of years of school our kid sister got cancer which lead to Dean joining the army and me dropping out of college to get a job and help pay for her chemo. When she finally pulled through and Dean got out of the army and we started talking about wrestling again, my brother Dean unexpectedly passed away.

That really fucked with me. Most of my hard drinking stories and travelling happened in the years that followed and my body took a bit of beating as a result. I kind of came unmoored and while I was doing well professionally I let myself go quite a bit and closed off emotionally. Then a funny thing happened. April 6th, 2014. Wrestlemania 30. I didn't realize it until the event was over, but it had taken place exactly 4 years to the day that Dean died. I was overwhelmed with a lot of feelings -- mostly one of guilt. While I had done well for myself professionally, and traveled far and wide trying to live a big enough life for the both of us, I had ballooned up in weight and spent most of my time day dreaming about what could have been. All those, feelings of "will I look back and wonder what could have been" came creeping in and I felt like I was letting both Deano and myself down.

In a lot of ways, that was the moment that set me on the path to today. I set a goal to drop from 240lbs to 180lbs and hit it. Then started working on my wind and building my mass back up to the 200lbs I sit at today. All the while, somewhere in the back of my head, even though I never said it out loud or shared it with anyone, making myself and Dean a promise that if I could get to 200lbs at 15% body fat that I'd at least get in a ring and see if I could make a go of it. For the first time in my life, my body is in the condition to give this a respectable shot and I am free of any obligations that would prevent me from giving this a try. I have two months off before my next job and enough of a bonus from my last campaign win to be able to make the two hour commute to attend every class they offer for the next two months.

Now, I have no illusions. My experience with sports in college and with fitness have taught me the importance of being realistic and setting incremental goals. From night one, I am probably the oldest member of the class. From here, just showing up for every class and keeping up is success. If I never wrestle a match -- so be it. But I am going to soak in the experience over the next two months and make the most of it.

You might not know me, but I tend to be overly respectful of those here that I consider to be my betters (for a lack of proper terminology.) and as such I've held you in some regard for basically being the Tom Waits of EWB.

Now, you may not wish to discuss it here, and you may have already opened a "GRIFT'S Adventures in Wrestling That Make Skummy's Adventures Sad They Can't Be That Adventurous." thread that I've neglected to notice.

But I have to admit a serious interest in finding out how things go for you, sir. I do hope updates occur.

  4. Random thought after watching the most recent trailer, but instead of having showcase modes that let you relive big moments from the past like they have for the last few games, I think it would be a hell of a lot cooler if they started to entertain some of the stories that likely won't ever actually happen. Like, give us a branching tale where Steve Austin returns to try and put down The Authority for good and let us decide who goes over in the end. Lets start playing with some of wrestling's great "What Ifs". Maybe have an NWO storyline that plays out with Sting as the third man. WWE 2k being their version of Elseworlds would rule.
  5. Big shout out to the dude who I had to kick out of the bar tonight who stood outside and talked shit to me for ten minutes while I was working the door before ending his tirade with, "We shall not meet again." Shine on you crazy diamond.

  6. My mom invited me out to lunch today. What she neglected to mention was that the lunch was with twenty other women who were here for an all Christian conference called Women of the Word. She also introduced me as being unsaved and asked them all to pray for me.

Oh, my sweet summer child, what do you know about fear? Fear is for the winter, when the snows fall a hundred feet deep. Fear is for the long night, when the sun hides for years, and children are born and live and die all in darkness. That is the time for fear, my little lord, when the White Walkers move through the woods... Thousands of years ago, there came a night that lasted a generation. Kings froze to death in their castles, same as the shepherds in their huts, and women smothered their...

  8. She was a catch. We were a match. I was the match that would fire up her snatch. - Mermaids by Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
  9. I am a huge Nick Cave fan -- mostly of his Bad Seeds stuff. If you are a Spotify user he actually put out a really neat app in 2013 that helps to make sense of his rather extensive back catalogue. It lets you listen to songs from all of his bands that Nick himself put into the categories of: Sex, Comic, Heart Break, Blasphemy, Confessional, Murder to Mayhem, Classic, Love, Spiritual and Super Dark. It even lets you add a second wheel so you can fine tune your playlist to such delightful combinations as Super Dark Heart Break, or Comic Blasphemy. I was actually listening to the Comic setting when I saw this thread.

  12. I had both but just dropped Netflix. Amazon is cheaper and offers more services than just its streaming content which, as others have mentioned, is great if you order through them at all. They also have a great TV selection including HBO series which I enjoy. I have a pretty demanding job and by the time I get home from the gym I am wiped out. It is nice to have something that Lady Grift and I can chip away at it two or three episodes a night once I get home. There is some crossover content but I think Amazon's library is all stuff that I'd be less likely to see in theaters or torrent if I really wanted to watch it. In the last few weeks of having netflix I'd often find myself searching for something to watch just to justify keeping it as opposed to popping on an episode of Big Love and relaxing.
  13. I like this game. The game play is the closest any game has ever come to replicating an actual wrestling match. It has a good ebb and flow to it. Grapples out of the front facelock are reversed at a freakishly high rate but outside of that I don't have a single complaint about the in ring mechanics. MyCareer is a good first outing, and like NBA 2k's version, I am sure it will get more and more engrossing in future volumes. Even if it is a little light now, honestly, it has more story to it story wise than Destiny did . I love that winning and losing aren't as important as putting on a good match at most places other than a PPV and I've had some really fun matches where I've tried things I wouldn't otherwise as a result. The CAW mode getting strip mined is frustrating but I understand the limitations. That said, I was able to use the likeness feature to paste a pretty convincing version of my own face onto my CAW which is pretty fucking surreal, and I have my company logo on my trunks. I imagine that given enough time and tinkering this game could reach No Mercy levels of customization. My biggest gripe creation wise is that the hair selections are so limited -- it is the biggest thing holding back decent creations given the number of things you can do through imports. I haven't really jumped into the Showcase modes all that much, they weren't really that appealing to me and with how gorgeous most of the character models are it is a little jarring to play as non-face captured HBK as retro-HHH. The models just look a little too chunky and plasticized. I am sure I'll dive into it eventually, probably once I finish MyCareer.
  14. Oh man, I used a suicide dive in the Performance Center and when I was outside the ring I realized I was able to attack Bill DeMott, who, even then as I was beating the shit out of him, asked me if I "really thought the WWE Universe wanted to see that?"
  15. Any tips for boosting your heel rating without outright losing matches? I've got the remove the turnbuckle skill, but aside from that and DQs I am having trouble boosting my rating. You lose a bunch, while desperately trying to get over with the crowd, and when you finally win the world title you immediately retire? Sounds like a Daniel Bryan sim...
  16. I haven't yet! I will have to read up on it a little. There is part of me that is tempted to get something low stakes like Madden or NBA 2k15 that won't get me too involved (work is crazy right now until the election is over and I basically want to turn my brain off once I get home) but then I also wouldn't mind a game with a quick story mode to get me through until Dragon Age and WWE 2k15. I am also interested in Lords of the Fallen (I typically prefer RPGs) but worry that I won't have enough time to get into it now or finish it before Dragon Age drops. I also haven't played Destiny in a few weeks, so it might be time to jump back into that mess.
  17. I also finished this last night. This was a lot of fun but I don't see it having much replay value. I am sure there will be a few DLC expansions but I don't think I will end up playing them. This was a lot of fun in that it wasn't particularly hard, and was easy to pick up after work and just as easy to put back down before bed. I am going to trade this and Watch Dogs in today for something. I am not sure what though -- got to find something to hold me over until the next big wave of releases hit.
  18. Whoa, I could get behind a Crow-Stingesque John Cena who seethingly quotes Dylan Thomas in lieu of any heel turn.
  19. So I pre-ordered this last night. The graphics, NXT, and career mode were initial sells. Then they had to announce a Mark Henry-centric play mode and Lazerus Pit versions of Fit Finlay and BILL F'N REGAL who can blood feud over every title like I normally do with CAWs? Yes please.
