I want Hamonic on the Leafs at his cap hit, that's a sweet deal. But all of our cap space is being saved for a certain winger who should freaking sign already. I imagine once one of Laine, Marner, Tkachuk, etc... sign, the rest will soon follow. The most I'd be willing to give Marner is 10x8... under that, great. Over that, go fly a kite.

Honestly when I saw the Aho offer sheet I figured that was it, Marner and Laine were both getting somewhere around 9-10 mil/yr. It's definitely a matter now of guys going on LTIR to free up the additional cap space and then them signing their long-term deals.

Was that honestly how you figured it?

The Oilers new uniforms are so, so bad. It's like someone looked at their current uniforms and said "Listen, guys, the salary cap keeps going up. Is there anyway we can have a uniform with LESS colors? No, it doesn't have to look good, just cheaper to make. Thanks guys."

Okay guys it was weird enough with the teams swapping goalies and overpaid power forwards but whose bright idea was this?

The Flames signed Matthew Tkachuk to a three year deal with a cap hit of $7 million per season. The final year of the deal is actually worth $9 million, which means that his final year as an arbitration eligible player will mean that his qualifying offer will have to be at least $9 million.

It's a good deal for the Flames and Tkachuk both. He becomes our highest paid player, but doesn't destroy our salary cap. It allows him to really drive home what he's worth over the next three seasons as well, knowing that the salary cap is expected to see a significant increase between now and then due to the new North American television deals and the Seattle expansion team coming into the league.

Oh, and Big Save Dave has allowed just one goal on 40+ shots through the exhibition period here so far. If he can stay healthy this year, he could be the first legitimate number one we've had since Kiprusoff.

I'm actually happy that Calgary lost that first game last night. I feel like the regular season was too easy for them last year, and that's what killed them down the stretch. To have the adversity right away of having to deal with a loss to the team that out-performed them in the first round of the playoffs should be the kick in the ass that they need to really hunker down and understand that there are no easy games.

There are no easy games for Calgary since Calgary doesn't get to play Calgary at all.

I missed the game last night. How did the Canucks do?

Question.

Are any NHL games ever shown on basic antenna stations?

I’m of the understanding that the majority of games are on ESPN/NBCSN.

Granted there's still 79 games to go but I'm really liking Neal so far. I wasn't expecting as bad as last season because it was obvious that was an off year but still less than his usual 25 goal season.

He couldn't keep up with the pace of play early with the Flames, and I think that got into his head. He wasn't getting many chances early last year because he didn't gel with either of the top two lines, so was relegated to third line duty and with his confidence shaken, when he finally started getting chances, he just couldn't pull the trigger.

As much as I dislike Edmonton, I'm happy to see him bouncing back. Neal's a good player, and seems like a good dude.

Being on a power play unit with Draisaitl and McDavid certainly helps a lot too.

McDavid and Draisatl are just 1 and 2 points behind him so yeah, but still he's way on pace to reach 100 which has only been done by Potvin, MacInnis, Leetch and obviously Orr and Coffey. Even if he slows down (which is to be expected) he's always been good with the puck. 80 wouldn't be too farfetched for him and the only people who did it this century were Burns, Karlsson and Lidstrom. It would still be impressive.

Marner is hurt, and that sucks. The Leafs suck, and that hurts.

But at least Don Cherry got fired.

Leafs are on pace for more points this year than last year so I dunno what you're whining about. :P

As for Cherry it's amazing THAT got him fired. That is one of the more innocuous racist things the man has said. I mean he argues against people wearing visors and thinks that the soft, visor wearing europeans should be more manly, like the good ole Canadian boys with no teeth and scrambled brains.

The fact that poppies is the hill he died on is very strange.

Still, has been inevitable for years and it was always baffling that it never happened, so now it has. Worlds still turning.

We're about a month out from training camp, so why not make a new thread?

Also, did you know that John Tavares is a Toronto Maple Leaf?
    • By Ruki
So....free agency is a think! Shattenkirk got less money/term than I was expecting, was sad the Leafs didn't get him. BUT! They did get Marleau! Big contract, but I think he could do great things with Matthews, and it gives us the option of trading JVR for defensive help should we feel the need.

Also! Price signed his extension...in 2018/19 he's going to be making 10.5 for 8 years. He's the best (or at least top 3) goalie in the world...he's worth the money, but I can't help but feel they will be in cap hell by having that much money tied up in net.

I didn't see a topic for this so....

I used to buy the EA NHL games on the day of release every year - until I played last years game on the PS4. Something about it just wasn't appealing - especially in the menus when trying to play my favourite mode, Be A GM.

I heard this year's version is better, so I picked it up a few days ago. And it is better - the menus are more responsive and less of a pain in the ass to navigate. The actual game play is pretty fun too. Very smooth. I feel like I can score in a ton of different ways. Sniping it off the rush, deking around the goaltender, one timers, point shots. It's not a frustrating experience like last year - it's just fun.

The real reason for starting this thread is...I want to talk about my GM mode as the Leafs. I attempted to tank hard - the Jets took Bernier for a first, and I was able to unload a ton of guys and wound up with 4 first round picks and 4 second round picks, plus a bunch more later on. The team was pretty thin beyond, especially in goal with only Reimer and Garrett Sparks. I thought I had orchestrated the perfect tank job.

The hockey gods laughed at this thought.

Instead, despite not having a player score more then 21 goals or more then 60 points on the roster, the 2015/16 Toronto Maple Leafs would go on to win the division and only fall out of the playoff in the second round. The teams who had traded their picks away to the Leafs also finished strong - so despite having four picks in the first round, the earliest pick I had was 15th overall. I was not pleased.

When it was time for the draft, I knew that I needed to add an impact player. Edmonton was 1st overall (again?!), but willing to deal. I was able to package two picks in the first round plus a prospect to get the top pick - and with that, drafted Auston Matthews. My remaining picks were late in the first round, so I packaged them to move up to tenth, where I picked up Jake Bean.

The other big move came in free agency. I was unsure about committing to Reimer as my top goaltender, so I looked to see if anything was available on the block. Low and behold, the Ducks were willing to move 22 year old John Gibson - a goaltender with the potential to become elite. I sent them Kasperi Kapanen and a 2nd round pick in 2018, and then signed Anders Lindback to have a solid back up.

Going into year two, I've made some significant changes to the team, and some of the players have really grown. Already, Auston Matthews is 87 overall with the potential to be a franchise player. Gibson jumped from 86 overall at the time of the trade, to 89 overall in the preseason. Morgan Reilly and Jake Gardiner are both far and away the best defenders on the team, while Dion and Scott Harrington (from the Kessel deal) are a very good second pairing. And Nazem Kadri is 89 overall and should have a fantastic season paired with JVR.

I was asleep when the draft started, and I forgot to do this earlier in the day.

Welcome to the new season, everyone!

I'll edit in some more thoughts over the course of my Monday, but for now all i'll say is that MacKinnon better score ALL of the goals if we've passed up on Seth Jones to a team within our own division.

      -------------------------

      My draft day:

I woke up at 4am to go to the bathroom and decided to check Twitter to see who we'd drafted, dreaded the worst. Scroll back through tweets...Yup, MacKinnon. Dammit, I wanted Seth. What's this, you say?! Major trade? I'll stay awake for this. HOLY FUCKING SHIT CORY SCHNEIDER!!! At this point I probably did what you all did, which was dash to @strombone1 and wait. As I watched some media coverage, Holy F'n Shit was I ever NOT prepared for Nathan MacKinnon's lisp. Oh god Seth Jones is in our division I hate my life. Good lord, that is a WORLD CLASS lisp.
