Rockstar has really taken some good anti-griefing measures too. It’s not foolproof, but waaaaay better than the beta.

I quite like how you can only see other players on the map when they are fairly close unless they've been naughty. And a few times I've encountered another player I've pulled my rifle out, they have done too, we both stand off, one of us puts the shooter away and then the other does too. And one of us will wave and it is quite pleasant.

I had a Sega Megadrive. Played it a lot.

Had a PS2 or 3. Bought Classics. Played it a lot.

Have a PS4. Bought Classics. Played it...a bit.

It is very much accumulative as much as anything else.

However, Green Hill Zone is probably the most satisfying level of a game to ever exist and does the most to sell the concept of the game than anything I've ever played.

This is basically me, only for me it was Sonic 2 (the first game I got with my Mega Drive) rather than the original. It took me a surprisingly long time to get round to playing the original at all, actually.

Hence Sonic 2 is my instinctive answer for my personal choice...although even then, it's difficult to argue against Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

I’ve taken to spamming Thumbs Up.

Legit this. The peak of the series and an incredibly replayability factor. I was still playing it last year and it had been out for 17 years.

I still get slightly annoyed that the players stats are listed alphabetically

I reckon Wii Sports should be part of this conversation. It's never been a big part of my life, but it drew in an entirely new audience for video games. The barrier to entry is lower than the vast majority of games and its simplicity made it accessible to people of all ages. I still see it used in nursing homes and special schools as a tool for developing motor skills, which is good going for what was supposed to be little more than a tech demo on a console released thirteen years ago. For that alone, it deserves a lot of credit.

I haven't really come across any other players that were giving me grief in free roam apart from one sod that lassoed me and dragged me around for a bit.

If you get lassoed, pull your knife out in the weapon wheel to cut yourself free.

Age of Empires II.

The most memorable thing about that game for me was that me and a couple buds would play that and UT during lunch in High School because one of them managed to sneak it into the school intranet.

Hey, I wasn't the one who put it in there, and the teacher didn't care what we did so long as we weren't watching porn. Hell I played a CZW DVD in that classroom during lunch once.

Haha, we did that same thing with Quake. Our teacher also didn't seem to mind as long as we actually got our work done first.

While I'm primarily a retro gamer, and the NES is my system of choice, there are plenty of great modern games out there and I did consider some of them for this question (I'm a big fan of the Elder Scrolls and Rockstar sandbox games, for instance, and I consider the first BioShock an absolute masterpiece).  But there are two I kept coming back to:

For more story-based games, Final Fantasy VI, which would also probably get my top pick if we were talking personal favorite as opposed to objective-best.  An expansive ensemble cast of mostly very well-developed characters you grow to love or hate, arguably the best version of the classic FF battle system, and one of the best villains in game history that twists the "save the world" trope.

Spoiler

The first half of the game is a fight against an evil empire, with Kefka built up as the Empire's top general.  Halfway through the game, Kefka turns on the empire to claim power for himself, and in the process *literally destroys the world.*  Halfway through, the good guys lose, and the second half deals with them picking up the pieces, laying their personal demons to rest and finally coming together to take down the villain and at least reclaim what's left of the world to begin anew.

For both games that are more skill-based, and from a pure design standpoint, I can't help but support the votes for Tetris.  Simple, elegant, the perfect embodiment of "seconds to learn, but a lifetime to master."  I think it really is the perfect game.
