MLB 2019-2020 Offseason Thread

Yeah it's a stupid idea, and there's still no way to fully prevent one of the players from catching it and then causing the whole thing to get called off.

Once there's been a true flattening of the curve I can see them playing games to empty stadiums as a compromise of sorts but it'll be in their home parks. Maybe they modify travel, like have west coast teams only play fellow west coast teams and so on. Toronto might have to "relocate" to a minor league park in the US to cut down on cross border travel. There's a way to do it that isn't completely outrageous but we're a long way off from that.

I don’t see the all the players, coaches, umpires, broadcasters, etc being willing to say goodbye to their families and practically be held prisoner by the league for months on end.

Solution: use replacement players. Just make up teams made up of detainees from ICE camps already in Arizona. Rename the World Series to the American Series and give all the winning team citizenship.

If they were to try to play a season in spring training I think they'd use both sides of the country and just roll with the Cactus League and Grapefruit League for a year since there are 15 teams per side anyway. The NL East and AL East would remain intact, but possibly under a different name for the year.  Then you'd just have a mix match division of the Cardinals, Pirates, Twins, Tigers, and Astros. The Cactus League would need to split their league similarly.  No interleague play.  You lose a few rivalries, especially Cards/Cubs, but it eliminates most of the travel and

Grapefruit League would require longer bus rides, they might make the south Florida teams move up north to get teams into closer proximity.  But a lot of players already live in Florida already so it's still more realistic than moving 1,000+ people into Arizona.

Feel like the Mets might be in one of the worst positions should the season get cancelled.  For all the talk of the Dodgers losing Betts without him playing a game, they have deep pockets and will probably back up the truck to pay him...even if they don't, they've got an endless stream of prospects on the horizon.  Plenty of teams have the resources to shake off a lost season.

Meanwhile, the Wilpons have a hard enough time spending money when things are going well...I can't imagine they'll be keen to open their wallets after a season of no revenue.  So that means losing Stroman having traded two top pitching prospects from an already thin farm system for what would end up being a two-month rental.  Cano/Diaz not being able to redeem themselves, making that trade look even worse.  Wasting a year where their really good young offensive players are cost controlled and making nothing, knowing Conforto's only got one year left in his deal in 2021 and as a Boras client it'll be an expensive re-sign.

Feel like they went all in on 2019 and 2020 and now with the season possibly wiped they won't have financial resources in 2021.  Makes the Cohen deal falling through even worse...and nobody is buying a sports franchise with things they are right now.

This article goes into detail about all of the flaws with MLB's Arizona plan.  First off, getting buy-in...it's unrealistic to expect every player being willing to say goodbye to their families for 4-5 months, knowing they'll have to sit out for 14 days should they have to leave the team to attend a personal matter.  But even if that hurdle is reached, there is still the chance of the virus being passed on by someone outside the MLB bubble and one positive test can, and will, shut everything down for 14 days.  The odds of a season actually being completed without hitting a snag at some point are low.  And all of this would be for a World Series title that would be permanently tainted by the conditions everyone's playing under.

It's best not to get any hopes up about a season.

Noted bioethicist Zeke Emanuel says he doesn't see sporting events, concerts, or large conferences returning until fall 2021 at the earliest.

If we actually lose two full baseball seasons they may as well re-boot the league with a fantasy draft ala MLB The Show. A two year layoff would make it near impossible to assess players anyway.

Probably next year.  I don’t see companies that are allowing staff to work from home now to move to those arrangements permanently.  People are going to be forced back to the office as soon as individual states allow it.

Crowded office buildings are riskier for outbreak than crowdless baseball games and that’ll be their justification.

Taiwan has baseball, why can’t we have baseball.

Speaking if they are going to start broadcasting games in English.  And ESPN has been in talks with the KBO to broadcast their games when they start.  Meacon! Strange baseball from a far off foreign land!
