SPORTING REGULATIONS:

  • Teams are allowed to use an additional MGU-K compared to 2019 to compensate for the increased demands of contesting the originally planned 22 races.
  • Drivers who participate in free practice sessions will be eligible for additional FIA Super Licence points. Any driver who completes a minimum 100 km (62 mi) during a free practice session will receive an additional Super Licence point on the condition that they do not commit a driving infraction. Drivers may only accrue ten Super Licence points per year from free practice sessions.
  • As a result of the expanded calendar, the two pre-season tests due to take place at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will be reduced in length from four days to three days each, whilst the two in-season tests that took place at Bahrain International Circuit and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in 2019 have been discontinued. Teams will also no longer be allowed to hide their cars during testing. The amount of time in which car mechanics are not allowed to work on the car has been extended from eight to nine hours.
  • The rules surrounding jump starts and the weighbridge have been relaxed with the race stewards now being able to hand out less severe punishments for missing the weighbridge and jump starts.

TECHNICAL REGULATIONS:

  • In order to reduce the risk of punctures, the last 50 mm (2.0 in) of the front wing can no longer contain any metal. Brake ducts can no longer be outsourced and must be made and designed by the team. The amount of fuel that can be outside of the fuel tank has been reduced from 1 litre (1.8 imp pt) to 250 millilitres (0.44 imp pt). The level of driver aids at the start will also be decreased.

COVID-19 PANDEMIC REGULATORY CHANGES:

  • The pandemic required changes to the format of a race weekend, which included abandoning the drivers' parade and pre-race assembly for the host venue's national anthem. A modified podium ceremony was planned for after races. The FIA introduced limits to the number of team personnel who could be on the starting grid to prepare cars and changed the cut-off times for cars to leave pit lane to minimise the amount of time team personnel spent on the grid. Tyre supplier Pirelli was also required to provide an identical allocation of tyre compounds to all teams and drivers. Where Pirelli were previously required to announce compounds for a race several weeks in advance, this window was reduced to two weeks, allowing them to respond to anticipated changes to the calendar.
  • In June, Formula One launched the We Race As One initiative to fight global inequity and the impact of COVID-19. The initiative used a rainbow logo, with the #WeRaceAsOne hashtag, and featured prominent We Race As One branding on vehicles (including the safety car) and signage on track. Formula One and several teams launched projects or fundraising efforts in support of the initiative.

Max Verstappen has extended his Formula 1 deal with Red Bull until the end of the 2023 season.

Verstappen, who became part of Red Bull's junior programme in 2014 and was handed an F1 drive with its junior team Toro Rosso the year after, was promoted to the energy drink giant's main F1 outfit during the '16 season.

He has won eight grands prix since and in 2019 he took a career-best third place in the drivers' championship standings following Red Bull's switch to Honda engines.

"I am really happy to have extended my partnership with the team," Verstappen said.

"Red Bull believed in me and gave me the opportunity to start in Formula 1, which I have always been very grateful for.

"Over the years, I have grown closer and closer with the team and, besides the passion from everyone and the on-track performance, it is also really enjoyable to work with such a great group of people.

"Honda coming onboard, and the progress we have made over the last 12 months, gives me even more motivation and the belief that we can win together.

"I respect the way Red Bull and Honda work together and from all sides, everyone is doing what they can to succeed.

"I want to win with Red Bull and our goal is, of course, to fight for a world championship together."

Verstappen is yet to mount a sustained title challenge with Red Bull and has previously indicated that he wanted to see the team start 2020 strongly in order for him to commit his future to it longer-term.

However, shortly in the aftermath of Charles Leclerc's multi-year extension at Ferrari, Verstappen has now officially taken himself off the market for F1's switch to new regulations in 2021.

"It is fantastic news for the team to have extended our agreement with Max up-to and including the 2023 season," Red Bull team principal Christian Horner said.

"With the challenge of the 2021 regulation changes on the horizon continuity in as many areas as possible is key.

"Max has proven what an asset he is to the team, he truly believes in the partnership we have forged with our engine supplier Honda, and we are delighted to have extended our relationship with him."

Verstappen will be partnered by Alexander Albon in the team's 2020 driver line-up.

Autosport understands Liberty Media has finalised arrangements for the departure of Formula 1 commercial boss Sean Bratches, who is expected to step down as early as next week.

Former ESPN executive Bratches was announced in the role of managing director of commercial operations when Liberty took over F1 in January 2016.

Since then he's served as part of a three-man management team alongside Chairman/CEO Chase Carey and motorsports managing director Ross Brawn.

His job has been to focus on boosting the sport's main revenue streams, namely race hosting fees, sponsorship and broadcasting deals.

Late last year it became apparent that the father-of-four wanted to spend less time in London and travelling to races, and more time with his family in the USA.

During the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend Carey confirmed that Bratches had issues with time away from home, and that his future would be debated after the final race.

"In terms of Sean, I'm discussing," said Carey when asked by Autosport.

"We're engaged. No decision has been made. Obviously Sean, he lives a unique life where he's got a family that lives in the United States, and he lives in London.

"I think he truly enjoys what he's done, he's enjoyed the experience. I think he's excited about the future, excited about where we're going.

"Right now we don't get a chance to breathe.

"So when we get past this weekend and get back to London we'll have a chance to sort of talk about where do we go from here? But we haven't made any decisions."

Yeah Button and Barrichello left after the Brawn season and Rosberg and Schumacher came in to the newly named Mercedes.

The biggest rumour is that Lawrence Stroll is looking to buy a stake in Aston Martin, then use the backing of that stake to take over the Mercedes team to form an Aston Martin F1 team running out of Brackley. And of course at that point baby Stroll walks into the best team on the grid, and Racing Point might struggle to survive without his backing.
