The Tears For Fears original linked here.

My favorite cover of the last year. I don't always like more downbeat, minimalist versions of pop songs but "Head Over Heels" makes perfect sense as one of those, and it's wonderfully sung.

Meanwhile, my favorite cover I heard in 2018 was probably:

Here's the New Order original.

A much more straightforward one, in the category of "oh, I didn't expect to hear this voice singing this song I know, this is nice." I really love the twang in her voice on the chorus.

I really love the original "Another Girl, Another Planet," it's definitely a song that's on the evolutionary chart that leads to pop-punk. It's been lost to time a little bit, I think, and tbh I downloaded that whole album by The Only Ones off the strength of it and I don't think any of the other songs are nearly as good. I liked that Blink cover.

There are also certain YouTube based covers that I have saved on Spotify that have replaced the actual song in my head to the point the original sounds wrong whenever I hear it. Some I heard before hearing the original so it makes sense

Kiss You by One Direction is

Along with a few other covers of hers.

Shake It Off By Taylor Swift is

Dark Horse by Katy Perry is

And then there's these two Carly Rae Jepsen songs I heard covered first but I like the originals too

Call Me Maybe

I Really like You

Oh and I think most of the Pop Goes Punk albums are meh but I like these

Since You Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson

How Will I Know by Whitney Houston

PostModern Jukebox does a lot of good covers. Robyn Adele Anderson has also done quite a lot of them both with PMB and by herself.

Also, a few really well known songs that people do not realize are covers. i'm posting the originals:

This last one is kind of creepy:

I'm going to submit two excellent covers of I'd Rather Go Blind, which is one of my favourite songs ever. It's probably most famous for the Etta James version, which I like.

However, I LOVE the covers by Christine Perfect (became Christine McVie in Fleetwood Mac) and Rodney Stewart:

The first one is a cover of Aerosmith's "Dream On" from the "Not The Same Old Song And Dance" tribute album. It features Ronnie James Dio on vocals and Yngwie Malmsteen on guitar. It isn't too different from the original and Malmsteen's fretboard wanking can be a bit much but I love it nonetheless. Dio has a great voice for ballads and more somber songs. A shame that he barley ever recorded song like that.

Then there is Peter Gabriel's version of "The Book Of Love". I discovered the song through the Scrubs series finale. It's beautiful. The original is good as well but the orchestral arrangement and Gabriel's vocals elevate the song to something amazing.

Another Cover I've always been partial to is Seether's version of George Michael's "Careless Whisper":

This is a cover by Van Canto, a German a-capella metal band (yes, this is a thing that exists). They covered "Into The West" by Annie Lennox from the "Lotr: The Return Of The King" Soundtrack:

And finally a Queen cover. Metalium's Cover of Queen's "Show Must Go On". The original is perfect of course but I think this is very well done as well:

This is stretching the term cover to its limit as it's by the same band, but I think a-ha's acoustic version of Take on Me is so amazing.

Speaking of Take On Me. Reel Big Fish's version is fun, too.

Another one I like is Quietdrive's cover of Toto's "Africa". Turns out the song works really well as a pop punk tune:

Ten Second Songs has already been mentioned here. My favorite cover of his is System Of A Down's "Chop Sue" in the style of Swedish Occult Rock band Ghost:

Another fun one is DragonForce's take on Céline Dion's "My Heart Will Go On". We definitely need more Power Metal covers of Pop songs:

Motörhead did a bunch of covers over their career. My favorite is from their last studio album "Bad Magic" on which they covered the Rolling Stone's "Sympathy For The Devil":

For me, Queen is a perfect band, and there are almost no covers of their songs that I actually like, except this one (Which Lynch Mob, W.A.S.P., Warrant and others have also covered):

Elton John's version of The Show Must Go On is passable, but I don't feel like posting it.

On this note, I heartily recommend Leo Morracchioli who does metal covers of all sorts of songs and usually adapts metal songs to an interesting accoustic style, for example Slipknots Duality has a really nice oompah band style it turns out. He does all sorts of things from things like the aforementioned Africa and Take on Me to Baby Shark, The Wheels on the Bus, and everything in between. It was funny I saw this skimming down the site just as I was listening to Toss a Coin to Your Witcher from the Witcher Netflix show.

Generally uploads a song a week to his youtube channel and there's a lot of interesting tracks there to trawl through.
