Summerslam Review

For the first time since Wrestlemania 22 both the Raw and Smackdown brands came together for one pay per view, Summerslam where 4 matches from each brand and an inter-promotional tag team match where on the card for what would be a truly great event. For the opening match it would the WWE Tag Team champions Big Vito and Nunzio to team with Billy Kidman and The Undertaker to face Matt Hardy, Vampiro, Devon Storm and Satan. In what was a quick and out of control match, in the end it was Billy Kidman that got the pinfall over his former tag team partner Matt Hardy as everyone else battled out on the floor. However please note that though the referee didn’t seem to mind Matt Hardy was not the legal man in the match.

Edge versus Ric Flair was expected to be a classic battle between a legend of wrestling and the future of wrestling but it ended up being nothing more than a way to humiliate Ric Flair when his own son David came out to the ring seemingly to face Edge but David simply acted like Edge was hurting him before tapping out in the Figure 4 Leg Lock. As Edge left the ring, The Nature Boy took to the ring and put a beating on Edge but David levelled his own father with a set of brass knuckles, joining forced with Edge to put a beating on The Nature Boy.

A seemingly endless battle between Kronik and their biggest enemies Diamond Dallas Page and Rhyno was set to be a brutal match and it did not disappoint as both teams battle hard, Bryan Clark looked to maintain his undefeated streak since arriving in the W.W.E and he did exactly that but he didn’t add a win either as in the end both teams could not control their anger any longer and battled to the floor where a double count out took place. Following the match Kronik announced that the war with DDP and Rhyno was not over.

Jonathon Coachman and Rob Conway have been thorns in the side of the Heart Break Kid for a while now and Conway has punished HBK so much that he passed up on the chance to become Intercontinental champion at one point to further hurt his adversary but for this match The Coach had insisted that Rob Conway simply beat Shawn Michaels for the Intercontinental title because then he could suspend Shawn Michaels or better yet fire him. Conway took off on Shawn Michaels with a steel chair before the match begin but couldn’t get the win despite the early assault. Conway continued to inflict punishment until the referee was knocked out, this brought out The Coach but Shawn Michaels fought back and delivered the Sweet Chin Music to both men before eventually picking up the victory.

And in a match that would not only determine who would get a United States title shot but would also put a long feud to rest would not disappoint as Johnny the Bull and Booker T took part in a 3 stages of hell match. Firstly it was a street fight in which Johnny the Bull won following the Mamaluke DDT. Johnny had the advantage heading into the cage match but a critical mistake by Johnny seen him crash through the table and give Booker the win. The third and final match would be a Last Man Standing match, with both men battered and bloodied it would not take long to incapacitate one of them, Johnny delivered a picture perfect Moonsault from a ladder out of the ring and onto Booker T through a table. Johnny was amazingly able to pull himself to his feet just in time to win the match.

The Inter-promotional tag team match saw the boss’s husband Triple H team with new Raw superstar Randy Orton to face a new Smackdown superstar Shane Helms and the boss Shane McMahon. In the end it was a Raw victory but it was a disqualification victory as despite the fact it was Triple H who inducted a sledgehammer into the match it was Shane McMahon that clocked his brother in law with it losing the match but sending a hard message to his sister on Raw.

For the first time in history we would see The Big Red Machine Kane battle The Legendary Sting, the match was one of the most anticipated of the evening and it didn’t disappoint with back and forth action with Sting showing great resilience kicking out of Chokeslams and Tombstone Piledrivers before eventually applying The Scorpion Death Lock for the submission victory.

The Smackdown main event saw Sean O’Haire defend his World Heavyweight title against Christian who earlier in the night had a falling out with fellow Team Charisma member Test. Though he seemed to push it to the back of his mind Christian on more than 1 occasion looked to win the match but somehow the champion would recover but as Christian hit a frog splash, Test pulled Christian out of the ring but blocked an attack before re-entering the ring and delivering The Unprettier on Sean O’Haire but the referee was down. Test entered the ring and delivered The Test Drive to Christian but as a final nail in the coffin Sean O’Haire recovered to deliver The Prophecy and retain his title.

Stipulations were made just before the Raw main event in which Mick Foley was defending his WWE Title against Kurt Angle. If Angle won then he would win the title and Mick Foley would retire forever but if Foley won then he would book Kurt Angle’s matches for the next month. The back and forth match saw plenty of action but Angle couldn’t finish off the champion despite numerous attempts and just as a slap in the face it was a roll up that eventually finished off the challenger allowing Foley to retain the WWE Heavyweight title. Following the match Foley celebrated on the ramp but Sean O’Haire attacked from behind levelling Foley with the World Title. Angle then made his way up the entrance ramp where he delivered The Angle Slam to Sean O’Haire. Summerslam ended as Kurt Angle held both the WWE and World Titles high in the air.

As Smackdown comes on the air, a video comes on the titantron which shows clips from last Sunday’s Summerslam pay per view but the only clips shown are related to Smackdown. Some of the highlights include the 8 man tag team match where Billy Kidman won the match for his team by pinning former tag team partner Matt Hardy. The double count out which occurred between Kronik, DDP and Rhyno during their tag team match, the Inter-promotional tag team match where Triple H and Randy Orton won the match by disqualification, plus the 3 stages of hell match between Booker T & Johnny the Bull which saw Johnny earn himself a United States title shot. And finally the match for the World Title where Sean O’Haire defeated Christian thanks to some interference from Test.

As the clips ended Michael Cole and Tazz run us through some of the events of Summerslam before talking a little about tonight’s card. It didn’t take long though before A Lesson in Violence took to the ring being led by Sarah Stock, a superstar currently taking part in the divas project, she led Sean O’Haire, Brian Adams and Bryan Clark to the ring where she announced that she had been called in to try and negotiate with the criminals that where responsible for the abduction of Paul Heyman, most notably DDP, Rhyno and Christian. Sean O’Haire then took over and called out his arch enemy here on Smackdown, a man that he has had problems with for a long time, Diamond Dallas Page. DDP came out onto the entrance ramp and announced that Paul Heyman would be returned if and only if A Lesson in Violence take part in a few matches tonight. DDP said that Kronik will take on Chris Benoit, Johnny the Bull, Rhyno and himself, Diamond Dallas Page in a 4 on 2 handicap match whilst Sean O’Haire defends his World Heavyweight Title against Christian in a re-match from Summerslam but this time if anyone interferes then the deal is off and Paul Heyman will remain in ‘Quarantine’ and after some consideration all 3 superstars agree and the matches are set for tonight.

In our opening match of the night it was Sonny Siaki that was in action as he defended his Red Bull championship against Shane Helms who was wrestling only his 2nd match since coming to Smackdown but this time instead of losing by disqualification he won by disqualification. Sonny Siaki found himself unable to get the win despite having already connected with The Siakolypse, he then resorted to using a steel chair to crack open the skull of Shane Helms who would win the match but not the title. Following the match Sonny Siaki backed up the ramp only to be assaulted by Ron Killings who beat Sonny Siaki back towards the ring and laid him out with The Scissors Kick. Killing stated that next week he would be challenging for the Red Bull championship and that this time Sonny Siaki would not screw him over.

Shane McMahon addressed the fans from his office, along with his sister Stephanie who was alongside her brother and together they confirmed that the week following Blaze of Glory there would be a Night of Champions pay per view where the champions from Smackdown would face their respected champions from Raw. This would pit the World Champion against the WWE Champion, The United States Champion against the Intercontinental Champion, The Red Bull champion against The European Champion and the WWE Tag Team Champions against the World Heavyweight Champion. The superstar who gets the pinfall in the tag team match will face the winner of the Red Bull/European championship encounter, the same goes with the World/WWE taking on the US/IC championship encounters and finally the winners of those matches will face off to determine who the “Ultimate Champion” is.

The second title match of the night would see Big Vito and Nunzio defending their WWE Tag Team titles against 2 superstars who have not teamed together previously, Buff Bagwell and Chris Kanyon and it looked like we would have new tag team champions as Bagwell and Kanyon controlled most of the match. As the match was drawing to a close Buff Bagwell took down Nunzio with The Blockbuster, the referee was about to count to 3 when he seen Big Vito clock Chris Kanyon with the WWE Tag Team title belt and instead of counting the pinfall he changed his mind and called for the bell ending the match in a disqualification. Buff Bagwell furiously went after Vito who used the title to knock him out before helping Nunzio to the back, they lost the match but remain tag team champions.

Backstage Kid Romeo is seen warming up for his match against Billy Kidman when Christian appears in the dressing room. Christian queries Kid Romeo as to where Test is and then asks if he knows anything about Test’s assault on him last Sunday night at Summerslam. Romeo denies any knowledge that he was aware of what Test was going to do and doesn’t condone what happened but at the end of the day it was between Christian and Test and it would be them that had to sort out their problems. Romeo then wished Christian luck for his match against Sean O’Haire for The World Heavyweight Title. Kid Romeo made his way to the ring where he would take on Billy Kidman and despite a good start to the match by Romeo it was Kidman that came out on top after counting The Last Kiss into The Kid Krusher to get the pinfall. Following the match Matt Hardy came onto the entrance ramp where he congratulated Kidman on getting the win for his team on Sunday night but since Matt was not the legal man when Kidman pinned him, he did not see Kidman as a worthy opponent for him and denied him the chance to face his former partner 1 on 1. Theodore Long then stepped out from the back much to the delight of the fans, The General Manager announced that even though Matt wasn’t the legal man, Kidman’s team won the match and thus at Blaze of Glory Billy Kidman and Matt Hardy would face off in singles competition.

Test is seen backstage with Stevie Richards, Test talked about his motives for attacking Christian at Summerslam and costing him the chance to be World Champion. Test said that Christian brought it on himself and that he had been using Test and Kid Romeo all this time just to get to the top, all Christian had been about since coming to the WWE was being World Champion and that both he and Kid Romeo where just pawns in Christian’s game of becoming World Champion. Test stated that so long as he is around he would never be World Champion. Sean O’Haire appeared and thanked Test for his help on Sunday night before extending an invitation to join A Lesson in Violence. Test said that he had no interest in that group and stated that once he had dealt with Christian, he himself would be coming after The World Championship.

Kronik took to the ring where they were scheduled to face 4 other men in a handicap match and their opponents where no slouches as it was 4 of the top superstars on Smackdown and just like you would have expected Kronik where beaten an inch from their life but a mistake caused Rhyno to hit The Gore on Johnny the Bull thus giving Kronik a short chance as they built a little bit of momentum but knowing that they would not be able to win the match by pinfall decided to break out the heavy artillery and drove Diamond Dallas Page through the announce table with The High Times before wiping out Chris Benoit and Rhyno with steel chairs. Kronik lost the match but the damage had been done to some of their sworn enemies. Following the match Bryan Clark got on the microphone and demanded a WWE Tag Team title shot and if they didn’t get one then every superstar on Smackdown would get the same as these 4 men have tonight.

It was not time for the main event where for the 2nd night within a week Sean O’Haire would be defending The World Heavyweight Title against Christian. This time though no-one would be allowed to get involved but this did not stop the attempt by Test but Christian had it well scouted and sent Sean O’Haire into Test which sent Test from the ring. Christian tried to the roll up but only got a 2 count. Christian tried The Unprettier but Sean O’Haire countered into a northern lights suplex and got the pinfall. The distraction by Test may have cost Christian the World Title again. After the match Test backed up the ramp smiling as Christian stood furious in the ring. Sean O’Haire left the ring with his World Championship as Christian shouted threats at his former friend. Smackdown then came to an end.

Velocity opens with the usual banter between the 2 announcers for the Saturday night show, Josh Matthews and Hugh Morrus, they talk about the action that we seen on Smackdown as well as the potential matches that could take place at Blaze of Glory and their outcome on the Night of Champions pay per view a week after that. Paul Burchill’s music hits and the former Red Bull champion makes his way down to the ring having been out with an injury for some time now, Burchill enters the ring and grabs the microphone, Burchill talks about how he was one of the second Red Bull champion in history and since Kid Romeo did not have the balls to challenge Sonny Siaki to a match for the title, then he would do it instead. Burchill said that Sonny Siaki has been champion for months now and nobody has been able to mount a real serious challenge but that would change because he wanted back into the title picture and a match at Blaze of Glory. Rey Mysterio then made his entrance to the ring where he would team with Burchill to take on Kid Kash and Juventud Guerrera in tag team action. This strong match went back and forth but in the end Burchill delivered The C4 to Kid Kash and picked up the victory.

Following the match the titantron comes alive where we see Christian arrive at the arena, he does not look happy as he storms into the building where Test is scheduled for a match tonight. Ron Killings and Matt Hardy where up next and the fans where looking forward to this match and rightfully so as it was one hell of a show that these 2 superstars put on. The match went back and forth for ten minutes when Sonny Siaki hit the ring followed closely by Billy Kidman, a brawl broke out between Kidman/Hardy and Siaki/Killings and the referee had no hesitation in calling for the bell ending the match without a winner.

Test made his way out to the ring where Stevie Richards was waiting for him. Stevie interviewed Test about his actions in recent week. Firstly Stevie asked Test his reasons for turning on Christian. Test said that Christian brought it on himself but using him, the only reason Christian didn’t leave Team Charisma is because he wanted to ensure that he could capture the World Title first. Stevie then asked what he plans to do now that Team Charisma is no longer together. Test replied by announcing that at Blaze of Glory he would face Christian if Christian had the balls to face a superstar that he held back for so many months. Test said that at Blaze of Glory he would not only prove that he was better than Christian in every way possible but he would end Christian’s hopes of ever becoming World Champion. Scotty 2 Hottie then made his entrance to the ring to face Test in what was a squash match; Scotty entered the ring and walked straight into a big boot. Test then delivered a powerbomb to Scotty for the easy victory in near 10 seconds. As Test celebrated Christian’s music hit and the former member of Team Charisma sprinted down to the ring where he brawled with Test for a while. Christian knocked Test to the outside but as Christian went after him, Test nailed Christian with the ring bell busting him wide open and leaving Test with a smile on his face.

In other action Mark Shade and Chavo Guerrero where in action against one another, both men where hoping that a win might push them a step closer to a title shot of some description. Chavo was the favourite to win this match and he controlled most of the match until Mark Shade delivered an illegal low blow allowing him to apply The Camel Clutch for the submission victory.

No-one knew what the main event was going to be when ‘The Animal’ Batista made his return from an ankle injury and cut a promo announcing that he was back and was going to be better than ever. Batista then made an open challenge to the back but he didn’t expect the challenge to be answered by ‘The Phenom’ The Undertaker who made his way to the ring and brawled with Batista, Batista used some power moves on The Undertaker but the match didn’t last too long as Satan and his minions Vampiro and Devon Storm hit the ring and assaulted The Undertaker leading to the disqualification. However Batista aided The Undertaker and helped take out Devon Storm and Vampiro. Satan fought off both men with relative ease though until The Undertaker hit a clubbing blow from behind. Satan staggered forwards into a spinebuster which definitely hurt The Dark Lord. The Undertaker took his chance and not only delivered a Chokeslam but a Tombstone Piledriver dimming the lights of his would be father. The lights in the arena went out and as they came back on there was no sign of Satan, Devon Storm or Vampiro. The Undertaker and Batista celebrated together as Velocity went off the air.

Match Results

Rey Mysterio & Paul Burchill defeated Kid Kash & Juventud - 79.8%

Ron Killings draw Matt Hardy - 83.5%

Test defeated Scotty - 64.3%

Mark Shade defeated Chavo - 80.1%

The Undertaker defeated Batista by DQ - 77.4%

Show Notes

- Paul Burchill getting the win for his team might just make him a stronger contender for a shot at Sonny Siaki’s championship.

- Ron Killings needs a good push as does Matt Hardy and it just didn’t seem right to have either of them lose this match.

- Test wasn’t ready to do a promo on his own and giving Stevie more publicity never hurts

- Going into Blaze of Glory, The Undertaker needs some momentum having been the underdog all this time and having him actually manage to take out Satan might just spark doubt in The Dark Lords ability to win Hell in a Cell.

As Smackdown comes on the air we get the usual banter between Michael Cole and Tazz, they talk a little about tonight’s event as well as the upcoming pay per views this month, Blaze of Glory and Night of Champions. Diamond Dallas Page’s music then hits and DDP makes his way down to the ring where he talks about what took place next week and states that since Kronik cheated their way out of the ass kicking that they truly deserved then Paul Heyman would not be returned just yet. DDP then called out Sean O’Haire and Sarah Stock who made their way down to the ring together coming face to face with Diamond Dallas Page. DDP said that he knew that going into Night of Champions Sean would want to have Paul on his side to help him achieve his goal of being the greatest champion in the world, so DDP was going to give him Paul back at Blaze of Glory so long as several requests where granted. Firstly Kronik would be facing DDP and Rhyno in an elimination tag team match, secondly Sean O’Haire would be defending his World Heavyweight Title against Chris Benoit and lastly tonight Sean would be defending his United States title. However Theodore Long’s music hit and the General Manager of Smackdown came down to the ring, Teddy told DDP that Paul Heyman would be returned at Blaze of Glory no matter what but he liked the idea of DDP/Rhyno taking on Kronik in an elimination tag match as well as Sean O’Haire defending the title against Chris Benoit being that Chris was screwed out of the US title a while back. Teddy said that tonight Sean O’Haire would be defending the United States title against his 2 opponents for Blaze of Glory, Johnny the Bull and Chris Benoit in a triple threat match. Not only that but DDP and Rhyno would have a tag team title shot, as would Kronik and 3 other teams in an elimination tag team match here tonight.

Matt Hardy made his way to the ring for the opening bout of the evening and he would be taking on ‘Captain Charisma’ Christian in singles competition. Both men battled back and forth in a highly rated match but once again Christian was caught out by his former friend Test who delivered a big boot unseen by the referee after Kidman had come to Christian’s aid when Matt attempted to bring a chair into the ring. However this only succeeded in distracting the referee, Test struck and Matt got the victory. Following the match Matt Hardy and Test assaulted Billy Kidman and Christian together before heading backstage.

It was now time for what proved to be the match of the night and one of the best matches in the history of Smackdown as Big Vito and Nunzio where putting the tag team titles on the line against 5 other teams. The champions started out against the team that they lost to disqualification to last week, Buff Bagwell and Chris Kanyon but once again Big Vito used the tag team title belt hitting Kanyon with the gold and making the cover for the elimination. MNM’s music then hits and Joey Mercury and Johnny Nitro made their way down to the ring where they struck quickly but Nunzio rolled up Joey Mercury for the elimination. Big Vito and Nunzio had now gone through 2 teams but it was crunch time as Diamond Dallas Page and Rhyno made their entrance to the ring and not only defeated Big Vito and Nunzio but made a statement with a punishing Gore and Diamond Cutter combination for a double pinfall. We were guaranteed new tag team champions and at this point Chavo Guerrero and Rey Mysterio, 2 time champions made their way to the ring and fought with DDP and Rhyno for near 10 minutes before DDP countered the 619 into a devastating tornado powerbomb and got the elimination. We where down to the last entrants and we knew who they where, Brian Adams and Bryan Clark stormed the ring and all hell broke loose between these 2 teams, it didn’t take long before Kronik was dominating the match but a mistake by Bryan Clark caught Brian Adams with a big boot and DDP clotheslined Clark from the ring. Rhyno set up Brian Adams and delivered The Gore for the elimination. DDP and Rhyno successfully captured the WWE Tag Team titles and defeated their Blaze of Glory opponents in the process.

Backstage Ron Killings cut a promo and did a little rap about his opponent Sonny Siaki, a man that he held the tag titles with before a bloody feud between the 2 began. Killings rapped about how the feud between these 2 men would never end before Mark Shade appeared. Mark Shade told Ron Killings that he was hanging onto his feud with Sonny Siaki because he couldn’t cut it without Siaki. Ron Killings had done nothing since his split from Siaki where as Sonny Siaki has become one of the greatest champions and superstars in WWE history. Ron Killings asked Mark Shade what he has done and then walked off for his match. Sonny Siaki and Ron Killings as usual had a brilliant match and as the match hit the 20 minute mark both superstars where down as a result of a double clothesline, all hell broke loose as Mark Shade, Paul Burchill and Shane Helms hit the ring ending with a double disqualification. All 5 superstars fought it out all with the desire to become Red Bull Champion someday soon. Theodore Long came out to the stage and announced that since all 5 superstars wanted the championship, at Blaze of Glory we would see a 10 man battle royal for the gold and all of the superstars in the ring would be entered.

Backstage The Dark Prodigy are seen, Satan demands that tonight Devon Storm and Vampiro do not let him down and says that what happened on Velocity was a result of nothing but a plan to make The Undertaker think he could beat him and that come Blaze of Glory, The Undertaker would finally be laid to rest and return to hell with them. Satan left but Devon Storm and Vampiro had a look on their face as if to ask who Satan was kidding. The Dark Prodigy made their way to the ring for the 3 on 2 handicap match against Batista and The Undertaker. Satan was the only one that could do anything for his team as the 2 much larger men dominated the former tag team champions. However Satan and The Undertaker broke down into a brawl which spread to the back. Batista planted both Devon Storm and Vampiro with a spinebuster and Batista Bomb combination for the victory. Following the match we headed backstage where The Undertaker and Satan had brawled to the back and dressing room area. The Undertaker ducked a lariat and through Satan through a door into a room which when we saw was prayer room decorated with a shrine to god. Satan screamed in agony as The Undertaker slammed the door closed and walked away.

Chris Benoit and Johnny the Bull spoke backstage about their match with Sean O’Haire and made a pact that no matter what Sean O’Haire was not allowed to walk out as United States champion and that the winner between them would grant the other a title shot next week. Both men then made their separate entrances to the ring where Sean O’Haire soon joined them putting his United States title on the line. Johnny and Benoit double teamed the double champion and after knocking him from the ring took on each other allowing Sean O’Haire valuable time to recover. The United States World Heavyweight Champion re-entered the ring and got involved in the mix and the match had officially became a triple threat match. The match lasted 15 minutes as Sean O’Haire delivered The Prophecy on Chris Benoit but as he made the cover Johnny came off the top delivering his signature leg drop on Sean O’Haire breaking the pin. Sean O’Haire staggered to his feet where Johnny delivered The Mamaluke DDT and followed up with the pin for the 3 count. Johnny celebrated his first title victory since coming to the WWE. Smackdown went off the air as Johnny and Benoit shook hands before watching Sean O’Haire struggle up the ramp with his World Title.

Match Results

- Matt Hardy defeated Christian - 81.5%

- DDP & Rhyno defeated Kronik, Bagwell/Kanyon, Vito/Nunzio, MNM, Chavo/Rey for the WWE Tag Titles - 91.7%

- Ron Killings defeated Sonny Siaki by DQ - 86.8%

- Batista & Undertaker defeat The Dark Prodigy - 74.6%

- Johnny the Bull defeated Chris Benoit & Sean O’Haire for the United States Title - 82.4%

Show Notes

- Theodore Long taking some ideas from DDP and booking Sean O’Haire into his title defences may be the start of the downfall of A Lesson in Violence

- Having Siaki retain the title before having a battle royal booked makes it seem like more and more superstars want to dethrone the Red Bull Champion

- The Undertaker didn’t lay out Satan this week but instead played serious mind games with him by locking him in a prayer room.

- The Tag Title match was originally going to be made as a result of Kronik threatening Theodore Long and having DDP/Rhyno thrown into the match for a triple threat but this was much better.

-Johnny was going to win the US title at Blaze of Glory but having him win it before that may signal that Sean O’Haire could lose the World Title at the pay per view instead.
