Public Enemies (2009): While it's always refreshing to see Johnny Depp in any role where he's not doing his usual "lol I'm so kooky" thing...nonetheless this was a fairly bland gangsters film that didn't really leave me with anything memorable.

Public Enemies could have been so much more and that let's it down. It's a decent enough film as you say but with Bale and Depp it could and should have been more interesting if they both didn't phone it in.

The Expendables

I don't know how I've gone this long without seeing it, but anyway, I thought this was pretty dreadful. Firstly, the plot is boring and way too straight-forward and the dialogue is poorly written and delivered. The biggest disappointment for me was the scene between Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Willis. It could have been such an iconic scene but it just kinda happened without any build-up. This obviously wanted to be a throwback to the old 80's action movies but completely lacked the black humour which made those films so good, or at least so bad that they were good.

Oculus was really good. Suspense over jump scares, neat transitions from present to past and one of my favorite elements from the Elm Street movies where you don't know what's real and what isn't. Top notch stuff and it made a good deal of money so I imagine there will be a sequel.

I saw the conjuring last night. Not gonna lie I didn't think horror movies scared me any more, I was wrong.

o_O

Watching The Purge. It's not great (in fact it's pretty bad), but Rhys Wakefield is awesome as the bad guy. He'd make a terrific comic book villain.

I did a double header of both Purge films last night, thought that they were both good in their own right and explored the Purge night in contrasting ways. The ending of the second one is very overblown though. Is that Wakefield chap the dude that can do the Joker smile? He is a little off, made for a quirky villain.

Bloodsport is still fucking awesome!

I watch this movie twice a year at least, still love it.

Just watched Guardians Of The Galaxy and I loved it. Even going in with no knowledge of who they were before hand, I was still able to enjoy it. It had the right amount of action and comedy mixed together. Batista as Drax has to be one of the most endearing character ever and the metaphors constantly going over his head was quite amusing. I loved the end when he asked about ripping the guys spine out. I'm glad there's going to be another one.

This is belated from yesterday, but...

Lost in Translation (2003), I didn't get the hype. A couple of lonely people hang out and are less lonely. I glanced at a couple of critical reviews and they mostly went along the lines of "THEY DO THE LONELY/ISOLATED THING SO WELL, YOU GUYS". I get that, but that didn't make me interested in the film/story.

Bought another stack of DVDs from CEX today. I haven't actually finished the last stack because Netflix got in the way, but these will be on my watch list at some point in the near future:

Withnail and I

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Twelve Monkeys

Road to Perdition

The Hurt Locker

LA Confidential

J.Edgar

...And the first five Harry Potter films. :shifty:

I watched Lost in Translation last week (fell asleep trying to last year) and it was so boring and pretentious. I kept expecting something to happen, but nothing ever did. I'm not expecting a pulse-pounding thriller, but I was expecting more than watching two white people walk around Japan for 90 minutes.

Because Stokerina wants to go see Mockingjay Pt.1 tomorrow, I promised that I would watch The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in preparation (I already saw the first film in the cinema).

...Fuck me this franchise is boring. Like, not necessarily the world itself... Just everybody in it. And, er, everything that happens in it.

I've had two years to forget this fact since watching the original, and now I have to watch five hours of it in one weekend. Nnnrraaarrgh.

It really is boring as fuck. I know I keep on saying it, but the books blow the movies away like crazy. It's almost like two completely different franchises.

Expendables 3 is so fucking ugly. It lost all its charm midway, and from then on the only entertaining thing about it was Antonio Banderas.

Another '365' week:

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)

I know a lot of people really hate this movie but I'm not amongst them, the whole battle at the end is cool with the Brotherhood swarming over the bridge after Magneto lifts it and drops it on Alcatraz, as is having the 'newbies' step up and join the fight. Fastball special! I had to laugh at Juggernaut though, in other things I've seen him in like the TV show, he's always seemed pretty much unstoppable but here he just knocks himself out by running into a wall? I guess because he was near Leech but I was under the impression that he wasn't a mutant. Doesn't help either when Kitty Pryde is smaller than the kid she's saving and she just tricked Juggernaut so, on occasions like that, I can see how people would look down on it.

A Bronx Tale (1993)

I always assumed this is where The Simpsons drew some inspiration from for the episode where Bart becomes embroiled with the Mafia because they're quite similar but looking that up now, it came two years before this. Movie goes a little OTT with it's Wonder Years style narration at times, like cracking jokes and going over the backstory of lot of minor characters or just outright pointing out what the main character is feeling at any given point. This is Robert de Niro's directorial bow and is dedicated to his father, which made me curious. Looking him up, I never realized de Niro Sr was a famous artist.

Stripes (1981)

Loved this one, really funny and it's a great cast with people like Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and John Candy. Final part of the movie where they inadvertently invade Czechoslovakia feels a little out of place since it's suddenly thrust upon you in the last half hour and it's a notable shift in tone from watching a bunch of bumbling idiots stumble their way through basic training to having them need to be rescued from a Russian base with firefights and tanks everywhere.

Mortal Kombat (1995)

I like this one, probably because it's cheesy as hell with stuff like Christopher Lambert's portrayal of Raiden and their over reliance on that one song which is pretty cool the first time you hear it but a bit grating when you get to the 3rd time. Seems to hit upon a lot of stuff from the game, I don't recall seeing any uppercuts though. Highlight for me is probably Scorpion vs Johnny Cage because that's when they get close to some of the brutality of the game, I guess it was ok there because he's not really 'human' and seems to bleed orange goo. Probably could have done with some better fight scenes elsewhere though, whoever did the stuff for Sonya struck me as particularly clumsy.

Swingers (1996)

Between the awkward casino scene, Mike going way overboard calling the girl he just met and Trent saying 'You're so money' every five seconds, I can't help but feel I want to slap a lot of people in this movie. Nice soundtrack though and some excellent product placement for NHL 94 on Sega Genesis.

Atari: Game Over (2014)

This one's a little all over the place since it's approaching it's subject from a few different angles: looking at the process of them trying to dig up the dumped Atari carts from a landfill, looking into how Atari got into this situation in the first place and a little more personal look at Howard Warshaw, man behind ET and other games on Atari. The historical side is interesting with crazy stories about the working environment at Atari, all sorts of drink and drugs, with Warshaw bringing a joint in on his first day as a way to fit in. For all they exonerate ET as being the main reason for Atari's downfall, I don't feel they go too in depth on what did cause it, other than touching upon things like how bloated a company it was, being cut down from some 10,000 workers to 2,000 when they hit financial difficulties. The story of them trying to arrange the dig and the dig itself isn't as interesting, except for this one city official going over the hesitations the city has with allowing this, amongst them being a worry that they might dig up some dead animal carcases laced with all manner of poisonous gasses that might crawl out Stephen King style.

E.T (1982)

And what better way to follow that up than to look at the movie itself. I like all the interaction between the kids as they slowly begin to uncover this strange thing they might have seen, trying to hide it in their house and all the little squabbles you get from siblings. The fact that the mother just bursts out laughing at Elliot shouting 'penis breath' at his brother is great. I think I'd do the same, that's such a bizarre insult. I think I picked a bad time to watch this movie though, seems like someone was chopping onions at the end. :shifty:
