Hostel: 6/10

For a movie that got a quote saying: 'It's the bloodiest, goriest, film you'll ever, ever see.' or something similar, it didn't live up to it.

Sure there was gore, but with something like that being said, I was expecting to hurl or something. Though, the 'Making Of' Featurettes made me realise Eli Roth is a god.

Dawn of the Dead (2004 re-make) 7.5/10

A lot better than I was expecting! It's a bit crap in places, but really good in others. A few characters don't get as much screentime as you might like also, but on the whole its a brainless zombie film, and they have their place! Like I said it is really good in some places, and not so in others.

Also, the ending (as in the last final tiny bit of the film) is superb, but then they totally wreck it with a series of little clips played in the credits that really ruin the ending a bit.

Overall, its better than you might expect with some really good scenes, combined with a few bits that drag, and some bits that are poorly done. Still, worth checking out, and a perfectly good way to switch off for an hour and a half.

Guest Rabid Wolveringo

Last night's House was great. First of all I had Katheryn Winnick (yet another Canadian hottie) in a lead role and her and House worked really well together. It's good to see that they're moving away from the standard House episode (as they've done this whole season) with House having to play therapist as opposed to physician. I also loved all his antics in the clinic, whether the bug in the ear, the 50 bucks or the magnet.

The stuff with Cameron was okay, but whatever. I'm also liking Cuddy a lot this season. And the show didn't have enough Wilson.

All in all, cool stuff.

Epic Movie - 2.5/10

Forget Epic Movie, I consider my quest to find a second good movie in the month of January far more epic. It started encouragingly with the heartfelt and entertaining Freedom Writers, then hit near catastrophe with the wretchedly unfunny Happily 'Never After. After a few encouraging disappointments like Alpha Dog and Smoking Aces, the cause was devastated by the attrocious Epic Movie, leaving our hero broken and discouraged. It may not have the feel good ending these action adventure types tend to have, but at the very least it might annoy me less than this trash. It actually has the distinction of being worse than Date Movie, full of lame parodies and rehashed materials from the rest of the "Movie" series. What's next? A kitschy look at the world of pornography full of bestiality, fart jokes and appearances from 80's sitcom stars? No wait, that one sucked when it was called Orgazmo. Not that it'll stop them from trying.

I just finished watching the first season of "My Name Is Earl" again and it's still as good as ever. It's just an instance when you've got a damn near perfect cast as I don't think any of the lead roles - Earl, Randy, Joy, Darnell or Catalina - are played weakly and it all just comes together nicely.

Alfred Hitchcock's "The Lodger" (1927 - Silent)

This is what Hitchcock considered his first "true" film. This is better than I was expecting it to be. At this point he was still early in his career. The Master of Suspense gave us a simple plot, a man is accused of a murderous rampage. The acting was great, and I give major kudos to the man who played the "Lodger". He was a very good actor, and even had the "Hollywood look", which was not common during those times. His performance really stood out. Any fan of Hitchcock should watch this movie, it won't disappoint.

Ju-On: The Curse ("The Grudge I")

I plan on reviewing the remaining Ju-On movies in the next days/week, and to avoid confusion for myself, I'll simply name each movie "The Grudge #", and I will consider the remake to be #5.

I remember watching the 2004 remake shortly after it's DVD release. It was a fairly decent flick. I did like the mood of it. But after watching the original today, it made me like the original less. The film is very suspenseful, and moves at a slow pace, mainly during the first half hour. But it really works in this case. For a direct-to-video film, it had superb special effects/make-up, mainy parts looked gruesome and disturbing. Some parts even came close to scaring me. I will give the remake credit though, it did try to remain faithful to the original, which I respect. All in all, Ju-On is a great movie, and I can't wait to watch the others.

Hitman Hart: Wrestling With Shadows - 8/10

Very good documentary. It doesn't oversympathize with Hart but at the same time shows Hart from a standpoint of a man who wanted to win to please his people. It shows most of the Montreal Screwjob incident, and does it in a fascinating way that keeps the viewer interested, especially the behind-the-scenes parts with Hart and Vince McMahon.

(And yes, Beaty, I don't know how the movie got on American TV, either. >_>)

Ju-On: The Curse 2 ("The Grudge II")

This movie was an unfortunate case. First of all, it's not very long, only around 70-80 minutes, like the original. Also, the first half hour is chopped up scenes of the original. This is completely pointless. Both movies were released the same year aswell. With 70-80 minutes of 1 movie, and 35 minutes of another, they could have just as easily made this into 1 movie. Business wise, what they did was smart. Release the movies seperately, company makes more money, so it makes sense. Film wise, not so smart.

Though halfway through, when the story continued where the original left off, it started getting good again. It got really good again. It felt like watching the original (without actually having to watch the original), same cast, same level of suspense, it was as great as the original. Though, unfortantly because the first half of the film was useless, that does affect the overall rating.

6.5/10 for "The Grudge II"

8/10 for the scenes only part of "The Grudge II"

8/10 or 8.5/10 if the original was combined with the second half of the sequel

Ju-On: The Grudge (or "The Grudge III") hopefully coming soon.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006)

God, this was even worse than the 2003 remake. 30 minutes in, I was tired of it, and wanted it to end. I was fading in and out for the remainder, it was that boring. The torture scenes had no redeeming qualities, well from what I could see. It was too dark at times. They were bland, and basically what you'd expect from a horror movie nowadays. Acting wasn't good at all. Leatherface looked his worst, I hated the mask, everything about him. Which is sad, cause I loved him in the original, and even tolerated him in the remake. I cannot recommend this movie to anyone. Ignore at all costs.

Cabin Fever, Final Destination & Final Destination 2 (for the first time). I was too lazy to reach for the remote so Sci-Fi was on all day. I'm still wondering how it came to be on in the first place.

I'll give them all 6.5/10 because my rating system is horribly arbitrary. I liked 'em okay enough.
