My only problem is that they've dubbed Osaka's voice wrong, typically. Being from the Kansai region (and, um...Osaka, obviously), they've given her a Southern US accent. Now I wouldn't normally care but they've ruined one of the fundamental jokes about Osaka. A stereotypical Osakan is meant to be brash, loud, streetsmart, rude, etc. (as Tomo says, "MY RIVAL!") - like, for instance, a stereotypical person from Brooklyn NY. Only as it turns out, Osaka is airheaded, a clutz and so very, very slow. If they'd given her a New York accent it'd made sense, but with a Southern accent she just sounds, well...Southern. The joke is lost.

The rest of the dub is average enough. It's not amazing, but it doesn't cause my ears to bleed either (which is a good sign).

Well, I just watched the first episode of Azumanga Daioh. I was a bit worried at first, thinking I wasn't going to like it (since I haven't watched anything with subs in awhile...)...but about 30 seconds into it I was laughing, I am enjoying it very much so. Although I am curious as to how the English voices sound.

Azumanga is hilarious. I personally don't think some of the jokes really go over well with a dub. But for that matter, not many people not in Japan will get some of the jokes. So it all works out well. Still hilarious regardless.

Also, what Stoker said about Osaka. It's like the dubbers didn't do their 3 seconds of required research. She really should've had a Clueless accent in the dub I thought, something just super airheaded. It would've worked well.

So I've just got through a lot of Elfen Lied, and Jesus Christ its just one emotional mindfuck, the Nyuu/Lucy child flashback is some of the emotionally demented stuff I may have ever seen. Overall? I love it, its absolutely brilliant.

EDIT: Even the opening theme is brilliantly crazy too.

Azumanga sounds like my next choice, as I think I need something a little more light hearted after this >_>.

Thing is, the mangas (which are licensed by the same company in ADV Mangas) translate it the right way, so they've got no excuse. :shifty:

Edit: Robster, Azumanga of course deserves to be at the top of the list. However when you're done with the lighthearted comedy and looking for your next emotional mindfuck (it's just one big rollercoaster, huh?), look up 'Saikano', known in UK DVD form as 'She, The Ultimate Weapon'.

Hey stok, you heard of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann? A new series by Gainax that's been fucking brilliant since the first episode, it's been the anime I've been following for awhile now. The character development in it is excellent, the designs for the characters are too, really.

One of the main people subbing it quit once it was licensed, but there were two other main ones who've kept going and, personally, I like them better now so... no loss for me thus far. They've all been released in high quality too, so that helps matters alot.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (aka Rumbling Hearts) also works well as a minor dose of emotional fuckery. The beginning goes something like this:

Episode 1: Typical high school romance. You got the main guy and his mate, and then there are two girl friends (a short shy one and a tall sporty one). The shy girl fancies the main guy and vice versa. Much romantic nonsense follows, with the shy girl finally confessing her love to the guy and they become boyfriend and girlfriend. Yawn. Don't a bajillion series do this?

Episode 2: They are a couple doing nice couplely things, until about halfway through the episode...when a drunken driver crashes her car into her, smashing her into a brick wall in the process and sending her into a coma for two years.

Uh, yeah.

Basically it's more of a real-life drama about what happens after she wakes up. The guy's now in a long term relationship with her sporty friend, who liked him anyway but just helped them get together out of being a good friend and all. The coma girl is under the delusion that only a couple of days have passed, when really everyone has moved on... But yeah, the theme of this anime is GUILT. As in G-U-I-L-T MOTHERFUCKING GUILT TRIPS APLENTY. So that's another good candidate for a shortish, only semi-emotional-fuckery-type anime series.

Edit: And Norro, can't say I have. Must have slipped under the radar. It's freakin' GAINAX though, so they're always worth a look. Will add to whatever list I might possibly have somewhere.

Get in touch with me sometime. I have sources to (legal) copies of the episodes leading up to before it was licensed. You can probably find the rest of the episodes from there.

Definitely worth looking into, it's basically being called the greatest mecha anime of the year already, and even of the past couple of years. I've not heard too many bad comments about the anime at all (aside from episode four... there was a guest animator, and the comments made by fans of the show on 2chan in Japan were so bad that the co-founder of Gainax apparently insulted them, and then quit the company). Other then that little foul up, the whole thing's ran perfectly fine.

EDIT: Yeah, memory served me correct. Takami Akai quit the company he'd helped found because of comments he made against fans criticizing episode four of the series.

I've managed to find a few that work on my torrent site of choice (for when my direct download site of choice fails me :shifty:). Most of the links are of course now broken due to the files being removed, but a couple of FS groups seem to still be hosting them - a group called 'Kamina', for example. I'm able to get the first 3 episodes without problem, so the rest ought to be fine too.

'Kamina' is one of the main characters' names, so it's no wonder the group is called that.

I'd suggest looking for Nyoro~n subs or Anon subs to start off with, but eventually you should transition into Bullet Speed Subs (around episode 16 or so) as they get really, really good. Also, try not to get attached to Nyoro's subs: he drops the series once it gets licensed, so yeah.

If you have any problems just let me know, I can try megauploading it or something for you.

The Nyoro-n subs would be all the ones with broken links. :P

Eh, I'll see if these subs are appalling or not. If they're named after one of the characters that means they were likely thrown up ad-hoc to cover for the other groups removing their stuff. That doesn't necessarily mean they'll be crap though (since they're usually guys who work in other FS groups anyway), so who knows.

The three main subbers you'll want to look for are Nyoro~n, Anon, and Bullet Speed Subs. The rest are probably thrown together roughly, yeah.

Does anyone know if the Welcome To NHK anime is any good? I picked up the first volume of the manga fairly cheap (had a $5.00 Borders\Waldenbooks Rewards ticket and a 20% off 1 item coupon and was allowed to combine them) a couple of weeks ago, and it was pretty good.

Bushmeister: Ah, you saw that too? I couldn't stop laughing at the absurdity of the whole thing-- especially the distorted voice while reading their credo.

Is anyone else kinda creeped out when a girl in a porn has braces? I mean, I can understand how, like, a girl could need braces, but be unable to afford them when they're underage, then when they grow up, and start making money in porn, they can afford them. But actually watching a girl in braces in porn makes me feel dirty. And not the good kind of dirty, but the bad 'this kind of thing shouldn't be allowed' kind of dirty.

The only thing that irks me about the anime are the freaky little grey creatures that litter his madness. They're far, far more annoying in the anime than in the mangas.

But other than that it's all delightefully crazy.
