House of the Dragon (Game of Thrones) Thread

Hey here's a theory I just read...

Spoiler

The wall isn't just a physical barrier, it's magic, right?

What if the thing they need to move past the magical barrier... is dragon fire? What if they literally just gave the Night King what he was after?

Spoiler

Also another theory, since the NK army seemed a bit small, about where the rest of his armies are...

Re: @Jasonmufc's spoiler.

Spoiler

See, I don't buy Gendry and the raven getting there faster than Dany gets up past the wall. Dragons are magic, I have no idea how fast they move. But the whole thing is solved by just having Dany waiting there anyway. Their plan is risky anyway, why not just have Dany on standby. Or just bring the dragon to get someone in the first place.

Totally agree with what most people have said. I want important people to die. I was getting so fucking sad when Tormund was getting pulled into the ice. In Season 2, he's gone. I love Tormund, but part of what I love about this show is how fucking pissed or sad you are when people you like die. Him getting saved by a guy who doesn't even seem to like him was not satisfying.

Eh, while I understand people wanting unpredictability, I feel like it's a slippery slope. I'm afraid it would turn the show into misery porn, not unlike the current seasons of The Walking Dead. And I don't want that. And I'm usually the first person to go "misery porn, yay!" as evidenced by the fact that I stuck with Sons of Anarchy the whole way through. <_<

Re: last night

That is a serious fucking weapon for the Night King to have. I thought there were some death flags for Daenerys early on with her talking about succession and how (she believes) she can no longer bear children. Turns out those flags were for her losing one of her children.

I think the Arya/Sansa feud culminated last night when Arya handed her the dagger after talking about stabbing her. As if Arya realized that Littlefinger was pitting them against each other at some point and wanted him to observe their "breakup". They have to be very careful since he's probably got eyes and ears everywhere, especially his own, but it felt a little too melodramatic to be genuine. I can't be completely sure, maybe a lot of it was genuine and at the very end of their argument it clicked with Arya. Littlefinger is very high on my episode 7 death list, I'd think he's most likely to go.

Also, it seems The Hound might be going to King's Landing now so get that Cleganebowl hype back in order.

I really don't know what to expect next week. I suspect it's built more around the politics and the meeting Cersei has called in King's Landing. But it's supposed to be the longest episode of the series so far, so we have plenty of action to take place.

I have no complaints with pacing or anything. I am glad this story I started almost 15 years ago is finally coming to an end. There are valid criticisms with the pace of some episodes and parts of some episodes, but I just can't put too much into them this close to finally seeing the finish line GRRM will never show me. A big thing is the realities of making this show, when nearly every female lead is doing the show a favor by sticking around at this point instead of taking other work you gotta wrap stuff up fast. It's also, this close to the end, hard to introduce and establish new characters meaning we're seeing a lot of old cast members stick around when in past seasons they wouldn't have survived.

Also, Danaerys' reaction or lack thereof when one of her 'children' got lanced by Night King was jarring bordering on the comical. And that's ignoring the paper thin romance plot they've built between Jon and Danaerys because they can't give it a proper burn.

tl;dr - Pacing is confusing, writing has become pretty dire, but the show keeps me because the action is good and i'm seven fucking seasons into a show and I want to see how it ends. It won't become Dexter bad, I know that, but damn, HBO fumbled bad on deciding to shorten the final seasons.

And basically the show has struggled ever since they ran out of book material to work with, and now that they need to write their own story it just struggles to deliver the same type of depth and intrigue GRRM had managed to write.

I don't get this. She very much reacted. From very early on Dany had believed her claim to the throne was untouchable and that she was practically invulnerable thanks to her dragons. She's just found out, in quick succession, the Night King is real, that her claim is on a shaky peg unless the Night King is dealt with, and her dragons can be taken from her a lot easier than she thought. She was very visibly stunned when the first one went down, and had to be yelled out of her shock by Jon to fuckin leave. And after at the wall she had to take a minute longer. Would it be more realistic if she immediately burst into tears?

I'm looking forward to this exchange very much.

Hound: Here, have a look at this, you cunt.

Cersei: You came all the way here just to show me a zombie? Pfft, I've already got one of those...

*Cleganebowl ensues*

I'm surprised by a few things that didn't happen in that episode, but I'm not complaining. There were plenty of huge incidents, and there was no need to cram more in.

Also, why did Rhaegar call his second son Aegon when that was also the name of his first son? Be a bit more creative, you blond ponce.

I was not happy with

the Jon reveal.  The only time it got mentioned this season prior to tonight was a tiny bit in passing that wasn't treated with any gravity.  Then with no build or anything, they just plop it all out their towards the end of the episode.  It felt like Bran and Sam just being like "huh, guess we should tell him."  No feeling of urgency, no feeling of importance.  Felt like they treated it the same as if he got a message to pick up his dry cleaning.

Pretty shitty payoff to one of the series' major reveals, even if we all knew it about it already.

By annulling his marriage, it makes any children of that marriage illegitimate, therefore, when his marriage to Ellaria was annulled, there was no longer an 'Aegon Targaryan'.

I took a chance and watched live since I figured it would just be talking and fighting and stuff

Spoiler

When Stansa called Arya into the hall I was really pissed. I was cursing how dumb she still was and then she pulled the shocking swerve and I was all :w00t:

But I still was worried. Dude can talk himself out of everything but then that fucker got his throat cut and I don't want to be weird but I screamed Yes! over and over and an uninformed observer might have thought I was having the best orgasm of my life.  So glad he is finally dead.

The other stuff was interesting but it didn't compare to that moment for me

On reflection, Jon/Aegon was born after Robert's Rebellion, and thus after the older Aegon had been killed. I suppose it makes sense, then, to name him in honour of his dead brother. It's still a tad confusing, mind.
