I'd say, whist obviously similar, they're not the same situation. The NZ batman went for the gap in between Sidebottom and the other batsman, even though it was clear that Sidebottom was always going to come across that gap to get to the ball. There was no reason not to go the other side of Sidebottom. He went for that gap, maybe thinking Sidebottom would pull up to avoid the collision and paid for it.

Bell and pretty everyone else on the field thought that the ball was over for a four, the umpire (allegedly) called 'over' and was handing the bowler back his jumper when Bell started to walk back to the pavilion. You can see why Bell started to walk, though a case can be made for him staying in his crease until he was sure.

That being said, it would have been good sportsmanship for Collingwood to retract the appeal but I can see why he didn't. The batsman was more at fault that Sidebottom
