Some thread about the law surrounding parody

Serious Parody

Recommended Posts

So, in short:

After working for nearly a year on this game, with a team of six people and $250,000 at his disposal (and dispose of it he did!), it's amounted to him going around to a few websites associated with gaming and wrestling, shilling this as the greatest wrestling game on iCrap, no beta, no demo, and two 'developers blogs' released over two months, one of which starting in April, well into development, for a $10 app, an apparently buggy one at that.

Oh, and ripping off the WWE and/or their former talents. And low-quality art just reinforcing the ripoffs.

And we should buy this allegedly finished product why?

Seems legitimate to me

Serious Parody, I'm going to you some legal advice. Free legal advice. I swear, I'm not going to charge you or anything. This is somebody who is watching some man make some very stupid mistakes. As I've alluded to in this thread, I know a thing or two about trademark law. This is good and solid advice here.

You have made a game that takes the WWE's trademarks, slightly alters them, and than puts them into your game. It's not that creative and it looks like amateurish. But that's not really a problem. Your problem is that you are arguably using a companies trademarks and than making a thread on a message board advertising that you are going head to head with that companies product. That's like entering a tiger-pit with a tiny little stick and prodding the tiger. Even if what you are doing is legal (which it may or may not be), the WWE won't care. They know you are an upstart developer with no money. They know all they have to do is flex their legal muscles and you will go away. You are a very stupid man if you in any way would insinuate that your product was in competition with the WWE. It is, bar none, the stupidest thing you could do with your video game. Not because you are right or wrong. But because the WWE has a legal department that's budget is probably ten times the size of what your game cost to make and if they want to, they can make you and your video game go away very quickly and make it very costly for you.

But it's a serious parody!

I played it for about 25 minutes of an hour stretch where the game crashed 7 times. From what I played, it runs very similar to FIFA Ultimate team.

I do think you need to specialise the Auction menu a bit more, because it's a bit of a chore to find decent wrestlers when you start out. I know you can set the sorting to price, but even then I'd like to set parameters for how much I want to spend, and possibly also parameters on Wresling Ability, Popularity etc...

I'd like to give a more detailed opinion, but as it is, it's pretty umplayable around the crashing, and as I know you have said you're going to sort that out, I'll wait until you do to give an honest rating.

Also, is there actually any method to the fluctuating bars on the match screen, I think you're missing a trick by not fleshing it out with commentary, or even just a short summary of what happened during the match, rather than just <X> won.

I'm truly sorry about the crashes. So far the advice has been to:

1. Turn your device off for 60 seconds then turn it back on again

2. Shut down as many background apps as possible (double press the menu button, then hold your finger on any open app until an x appears. Tap the x to see them close)

3. Start A New Game

4. Don't change any of the profile settings (This is actually a cheat in the game to give you slightly more starting capital and a slightly better roster)

Above all else, when you are playing it, if a screen looks like it's taking time to do something or slowing down, try not to keep pressing things. For example as it's loading the splash screen at the beginning, try not to frequently tap it or if there appears to be a slow down in the cards moving from side to side, just let it sit still for a few seconds until the auto save has finished.

Hopefully that will prevent it from crashing long enough for us to get it patched up. Your suggestions about search parameters is noted and is now on the list of things to add to the next feature release. We also have plans for the commentary part going forward but that will be a little way off. Thanks for the support.

You're not even a nice person like Ryland is. You're genuinely dislikeable.

I'm sorry, allow me to smile nicely at you all for calling me a liar all day. Way back at the beginning of the thread people were all "Someone owe's him an apology for calling him a liar" and now all of a sudden I'm a liar again for what? I make wrestling games for a living, what more I'm the lead designer of a company that makes a living and you guys doubt that I could get a job making wrestling games? I didn't get to where I am for no reason. One guy basically accused me of writing out the WWE's concepts and passing them off as my own, then when he checked the dates and realised I actually wrote the designs a long time before the features were ever even heard of he suddenly changed the text to make out like it was nothing like the main concept. YET I'M THE LIAR.

I've given feedback and you've not given me any responses >_>

My apologies, it seems I've been focused too much on the naysayers. I'll go back through the thread and pick out your feedback.

Now you're taking his suggestions, does he get a job with your company?

Oh my god. Your first tech support option really is "have you tried turning it off and on again?" That's awesome.

Now address the IGN thread.

Someone Seriously Parodied his username and posted that thread. What, you don't believe him? As Mongoose Irvine once said "I am an honest man, I always do exactly what I say I am going to do." and our friend here is just like that.
