Board Game thread

Recommended Posts

My six year old and I just played freeplay for ages and she got soooo into it.

We played with loads of cards and then we played with just a handful, bringing them in and out like some mega DJ - she loved the strings of Call Me Maybe, drums of No Scrubs, guitars of a Weezer song, Call Me Maybe vocals, Barbara Streisand vocals, a few sound effect loops and also some Tribe Called Quest.

So so fun.

You sold it to me with those so I ordered it straight away. Ordered the base game as well as a rock card pack (am I right in that these are almost like Magic the Gathering boosters and will have different cards in?) the boosters arrived this morning but I don't think the main game will be here in time for christmas gaming looking at the timing, hopefully won't be waiting too long!

...fuck, that looks cool. I wish I knew what it was when they were selling it around here on uber-clearance because they had so many of them.

Hive has gone down well with the girlfriend, in the respect that she's now desperate to beat me at it. We finished something like 25-2.

I played King of Tokyo for the first time. What a blast, super fun to play especially since the people I played with normally don't play board games.

I just found Dropmix at Toys R Us for 19 dollars!

I know where I'm going after work tomorrow!

I just checked Amazon, and it's currently $20 Canadian.

Yeah seems to be on clearance everywhere. I popped it out and freestyled for a bit - stupidly fun! I'm sad that it seems to be (possibly) pretty dead in the water, so I'm going to have to try and snag up any cards while I can.

Played Catan for the first time on Boxing Day, immediately bought a set and now Me, my Sister, her Boyfriend and my Partner are all horribly addicted. We've rearranged all our schedules so we can play one last game before my partner flies back home.

I've only won once.

Been playing 7 Wonders Duel lately with my girlfriend. I like it but feel it's super fast. I'd like a similar game that wouldn't end in 15 minutes.

We like playing games like the Hive and Penguins and stuff like that but when we have more time we prefer card drafting games and are struggling to find one that really fits what we want.

We have a couple cooperative games we are happy with but we're still looking for a competitive card drafting game that takes long to complete and is interesting. Why is fun so stressful?!

I lost all the games we scheduled that day.

But today I played against my sister and her partner and I won.

Longest Road, Biggest Army, 1 VP, one city, three settlements. shove it everyone else.

My girlfriend understands how Hive works now and I can't decide if that's good or bad news (good that it's more competitive but bad that I'm losing).

Got a few of the expansion packs for Unstable Unicorns in, keen to see how they add to the game.

I became super serious about Catan and read a strategy guide and everything. It ruins the game with casuals (aka you will be great), but it is great if you want to win.

Example - hay is the most important resource followed by ore and wood. I sometimes play and only have access to these resources and win.

Example 2 - if someone wants to make a trade, you are neutral on said trade but another opponent wants to make the trade, you make the trade. Your best case scenario is no one trades as no one benefits. But if a trade happens and you are not part of it, two people benefit. It could just be one if you make the trade.

Example 3 - when you roll the 7 early in the game, place the robber on the player who just went and them alone. If you block a lot of people, they want revenge. Blocking the player who last went gives you the longest time from revenge.

Example 4 - Roads can be a trap. They are somewhat useful, but longest road is not. Roads are visual in the game. People are scared by them because they seem more important. Focus on cities.

Got my first Catan victory without any Victory Point cards today. I usually go for a ore/wheat/sheep heavy strat, upgrading  my two base towns, getting the biggest army, a few VP cards and a couple random points here and there, but today I went with a Wood and Brick heavy strategy and it was great. I had a long winding road trapping my two opponents in one corner, leaving me free to spread out. It was great.

Maybe It's Poison got funded! Looking forward to that arriving later this year.

Definitely going to look for Codenames, I'm at a hobby shop later so I'll see if they've got it.

Random question but does anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced copy of Shadow Hunters?

This finally arrived! Looking forward to playing it, hoping my family are around on Sunday to give it a go.

Yeah Codenames is definitely worth getting, especially at £4!

Keep meaning to get the Duet version.

Gonna cross stitch a playable, full size Catan set. Here's the first tile.

anyone played Lords of Xidit? It's just £10 on Amazon and the Works and it's got good reviews on BGG. Seems like you get a lot of game for your money.

I've got the original Himalaya which is great (and very hard to get now). I don't think the retheme does it any favours but I've heard it's mostly the same game so weeeeelllll worth a tenner.

Works often has a few "proper" ganes floating around and has probably had half a dozen legit decent ones over the last few years.

Found a nice little bonus in a bag as I was trying to find some manga I'd not got round to reading yet. Turns out I picked up Boss Monster for a tenner a little while ago and had completely forgotten about it. Decent enough for a quick game to play and seemed to go down well. Can see it being added to the list of little options for waiting for people to turn up for other games and during smoke breaks during RPG sessions.
