Probably the Henry Rollins connection, he's originally a DC guy. He was originally in a band called SOA (State of Alert) and got the gig with Black Flag because he was basically a super fan, and got on stage with them often in DC.

Still, Black Flag was so much better before Rollins. I liked them better with Keith Morris, Ron Reyes, and Dez Cadena more than the Rollins years. Ron Reyes was probably my favorite era of Black Flag.

Right, I had forgotten Rollins was from DC. I mostly know Black Flag from their Rollins era stuff, though I do like their stuff with Morris

Blasphemy.

I like later era Black Flag, when they were almost doing sludge type stuff. That said, I do prefer the Jealous Again/Nervous Breakdown EPs, but that's not a knock on Rollins or the later direction of the band at all.

Bad Brains, fuck yes.

I was very impressed (it rarely happens) with Expire, this shit is a great example of how the punk/metal/rap fusion can result in good jams:

And some Jerry's Kids opening for the Misfits in 1983:

So I asked a similar question in the Metal thread (only with Death Metal instead of Hardcore): What bands would you guys suggest for someone who likes Metalcore/Post Hardcore and is trying to get into straight up Hardcore?

Cruel Hand, Madball, Cro-Mags, Terror, Bio-Hazard, WarZone. That's probably a good place to start for the more heavy shit.

These are all great recommendations. I'd also add Bitter End to that list--Climate of Fear is an absolutely crushing record.

For the more metal/hardcore stuff (all the bands that influenced Killswitch Engage/Lamb of God/Misery Signals/all those newer deathcore bands, etc.) from the '90s/early 2000s:

Undying, Day of Suffering, Arkangel (especially Dead Man Walking, killer record), Prayer for Cleansing.

and of course, Martyr AD, who bring it all together:

And if you like Martyr AD, check out Disembodied, their other band, who's sludgier and weirder.

Also, if you like super-macho HC (its ridiculous but awesome), check out Sworn Enemy:

One band that I never see get enough love is D.O.A.

The reason I mention them is that their guitar player, Dave Gregg died a few days back. D.O.A. is/was a fucking great hardcore band, one of the pioneers of the sound really. You could probably argue that they were Canada's greatest punk band ever. Dave Gregg had such a bad ass sound in his guitar, it was something else, and Joey Shithead (lead singer) was one of the top front men of punk rock.

Yes! DOA is awesome.

And speaking of great classic bands with acronym names, here's some JFA including the summer classic "Beach Blanket Bongout" at 3:08.
