Serious Parody PSN Game

To be fair, the game doesn't look too bad for an independent studio. I think it's just the complete lack of originality in terms of names/music etc. I mean, Fire Pro had characters based on those of WWF/WCW etc., but they were still different enough. This... this is just lazy. I mean, the one who's meant to be The Rock: Johnny "The Bull" Miavia. HE LITERALLY JUST SWAPPED TWO LETTERS AROUND IN HIS SURNAME. FUCKS SAKE.

It does though. Being an indie studio doesn't mean you get a free pass for shitty graphics. That's the entire reason for the pixel art style being so big. Papers Please was amazing, but it'd have been a much tougher sell if it looked like a shitty pre-rendered mess that some kid did in photoshop. Gameplay is important, but if you're going to try and compete with a AAA game, you better have the talent to do it.

Not to mention that there's plenty of devs that started off Indy that went for great graphics and pulled it off, because they had the talent to actually do it.

While a lot of critism can be said about the charachter design (or lack of it) and or the use of a No Mercy style system thats around 10+ years old there are some innovations from some of the dev clips that were made including features like limb damage that effects moves so working on the legs would mean that if the opponent tries a suplex they cannot support the weight and another addition is to have some counter annimations specific to some wrestlers and that some moves can be countered into finishers

The problem is that taking out a leg pretty much cripples your moveset for the rest of the match. SP put on their Facebook page that your leg recovers slightly if you've got momentum on your side... which would be great except you can't use anything that requires the injured leg, so good luck building that momentum.

It's a failure of titanic proportions.

Also too he's not aware that there's a real wrestler named Johnny the Bull is he.

It'd be great if that's the thing that brings him down.

ICE-BERG!

ICE-BERG!

ICE-BERG!

I wonder who his rival is...

"The Unsinkable" TitaNick?

Let's be realistic, it'll sell a couple units due to people clamoring for a "new" wrestling game, and he'll consider that a success and come around to try and rub it in everyone's face.

Can you really blame him though? It's not as though the guy is a household name. He's a Rellik of a bygone era.

The thing to remember about graphics is that an indie studio can get around a lack of resources by creating a striking artistic style. That's exactly what the developers of Hotline Miami, Limbo and the like did, and that's why they don't look like laughable attempts to match up visually to the products that the big-budget companies can produce.

Take a look at this, for example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI-ddGp4k5E

That's not going to blow anyone away, but it's a clear example of a developer who understands the technical limits with which they need to work, and who decided to concentrate on giving their games a distinctive look that could realistically be pulled off on a shoestring budget.

This wrestling game, however, looks like the result of a team that looked at some of the PS2-era wrestling games and tried to emulate their raw graphical power, despite not really having the personnel to get it right. If you're going to try to match the technical specifications of an AAA title without first having a team consisting of people who have had experience in the design process at a larger, wealthier studio, the chances of succeeding without compromising something, like Serious Parody has with its motion animation, are slim.

Legitimately cannot get over this. To piggyback on Bobfoc's post, this looks like the guy attempted to do a reasonable facsimile of cutting-edge graphics and ended up with an un-ironic version of Xavier: Renegade Angel.
