That category is always pretty tough though so it's not that surprising.

It's a mix of stuff that makes me happy and stuff that makes me go "oh for fuck's sake." Still too much fawning over House of Cards, which is profoundly overrated, but on the other hand the Modern Family clogging up the Supporting Actor/Actress era is over and they recognized someone on Game of Thrones who isn't Peter Dinklage. The omissions I'm most annoyed about in each major category are as follows.

Best Drama - Boardwalk Empire (now that it's genuinely great it's not a shiny thing anymore so the Emmys don't notice)

Best Comedy - Brooklyn Nine-Nine (seriously, what?)

Best Lead Actor, Drama - Mads Mikkelsen, Hannibal (aside from Jeff fucking Daniels for the fucking Newsroom I get it, though. Good field)

Best Lead Actress, Drama - Diane Kruger, The Bridge (unfortunately, nobody watches The Bridge really. Out of sight, out of mind)

Lead Actor, Comedy - Andy Daly, Review (not that it was ever going to happen)

Lead Actress, Comedy - Abbi Jacobsen, Broad City (so in other words, they did fine with this one IMO. Had they left out Poehler, JLD, or Schilling I would have been pissed)

Supporting Actor, Drama - Dean Norris, Breaking Bad (bah. Deserved recognition. I would have taken him over Aaron Paul, even)

Supporting Actress, Drama - Maisie Williams, Game of Thrones (but Lena Headey in that spot is pretty hard to argue with)

Supporting Actor, Comedy - Matt Walsh, Veep (the actual standout supporting actor in Veep season 3)

Supporting Actress, Comedy - Marcia Gay Harden, Trophy Wife (but nobody watched it and it was cancelled, sooooo...)

Bob's Burger? I have never cared for the show in the least. To me, it is King of the Hill 2.0... Was that just basically a 'hey, we need an animated show not made by Seth McFarlane' nod?

Does anyone watch the show? Maybe I am just missing out but I hear at least people talking about the other shows, sans TNMT. I have never met anyone who likes the show. The highest compliment I have heard was "I tolerate the show until American Dad, Simpsons, and Family Guy are on".

Yeah, say what you will about Loren Bouchard but Bob's Burgers is an amazing show. I don't think I've seen a single bad episode - some weak B and C stories, but never an episode that didn't make me laugh at least a few times.

And pizza's right. King of the Hill was a great show. Less so later on in its run, but still miles and miles ahead of anything Seth MacFarlane's ever put out.

The cutoff is at 6 episodes so that's not the reason. Just being on Comedy Central more than likely.

Also, say what you will about The Newsroom but I have no problems with Daniels being nominated. He's great in that role.

House of Cards getting all those nominations is absurd. Season 1 was okay but Season 2 was a fucking joke.

I'm really starting to just dismiss the Emmys. I swear the voters don't even watch the submissions any more and check boxes for Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory by saying to themselves, "Those shows were pretty good a few years ago, right?"

Second season of The Newsroom was actually pretty awesome, and Daniels was a big part of that, so he definitely deserved his nomination. Not that it matters, anyway, all these aren't exactly an exact science.

That being said, no Emily Mortimer makes me sad

At least the Emmys have reminded me to watch The Normal Heart, had that on my watchlist forever.

I'm curious, what was the exact appeal of King of the Hill?

I only watched a handful of episodes and while I enjoyed it as a show(meaning I liked whatever the plot was on any episode I did watch), whenever I saw it, I assumed it was a comedy and I laughed barely more than I did laugh at the couple of awful Cleveland Show episodes I forced myself to watch. Probably why I didn't make more of an effort to watch more KOTH, because I thought it was a comedy and it didn't really make me laugh.

King Of The Hill was very much a comedy, just a different one from everything else that was on TV - and christ, what a breath of fresh air it was.

I love it because it's not people acting like they know they're in a television show, cracking jokes at every chance they get. They age, have story arcs that last seasons or a few episodes and best of all you can grow to really like or really hate particular characters without them really doing anything forced - it's just their personalities.

The characters in King Of The Hill act how living, breathing people would act and that is such a breath of fresh air. Even Dale Gribble, the most over the top character of the bunch has some very solid character building and 'real' moments for all the numbskullery that goes on. It was a learning experience as well, Hank Hill held different values than most of his audience across the world but any time that something came up you were shown why Hank disagreed with something, and in the end he would turn around on the issue or find some kind of middle ground. I love that about the show - it had smart humor based off political issues at times, but it wasn't heavy handed and done with a snobby nose like anything that Seth McFarlane touches.

If you take one episode of King Of The Hill against five episodes of Family Guy, I'd likely laugh physically less at King Of The Hill - but King Of The Hill itself is far funnier in the way it handles things. There are just fewer punchlines, and those that do exist I could quote for days.
