Sports Betting now legal in New Jersey

Not sure where this would go, so I figure I'll just make it it's own topic.

From the Philadelphia Business Journal:

Gov. Chris Christie has paved the way for sports gambling at New Jersey casinos and racetracks. Christie issued a directive Monday that will allow the gaming facilities to offer sports betting, according to the Associated Press.

Could it save Atlantic City? That remains to be seen, but it will certainly give New Jersey gaming facilities a leg up on Pennsylvania casinos where sports gambling is still illegal. Atlantic City will now have something that Parx, SugarHouse and the Sands in Bethlehem can't offer — which should attract new customers.

The news comes as Atlantic City is losing 6,100 jobs due to closures at the Revel Casino Hotel, Trump Plaza and Showboat. The Taj Mahal is also rumored to be in danger of going into bankruptcy and closing, which would mean another 2,800 jobs lost.

I find it amusing that sports gambling being illegal in the US considering how common and popular it is elsewhere.

Especially considering how weed is legal in some states and how easy it is to legally get a gun.

What's the reason sports betting is seen as so wrong?

Because the NFL, NBA, MLB and NCAA say it is and they have a ton of money to bribe"donate" to politicians to keep it illegal

It's really not that common outside of the UK & Ireland, maybe some Asian countries too? Basically anywhere where there's a lot of horse racing. :shifty:

But it's illegal (as far as I know) in Holland and Spain, at least.

Here too, I can walk 10 minutes down the road to the local pub and bet on anything from the Gallops at Vaal (Wherever that is) to the Shanghai Masters snooker to the Ducks winning the Stanley Cup next year.

This isn't commonplace elsewhere? Especially the US where everything is seemingly legal.
