102. 'Highly Refined Pirates' by Minus The Bear (21st December 2014)

103. 'Garbage' by Garbage (22nd December 2014)

103 in 81 days. 22 ahead of schedule.

Last of Us Left Behind soundtrack was okay, not as good as the first, but still decent atmospheric music. Standout tracks were "Unstable", "Last of Us (Astray)", "The Path (Vacant)" and "Left Behind". Only really worth a listen unless you're really into TLOU and game soundtracks.

Meant to listen to the GC album for years as I've heard all their other original albums, finally gave it a shot and whilst it's not their best work, it produces some pretty good tracks. "Harlow's Song", "Sex On The Radio" and "There She Goes" were probably my three picks, but the individual songs are generally solid. Worth a listen if you like GC, otherwise it's probably not going to be for you.

Minus The Bear was suggested by Google based on listening to Prize Fighter Inferno, but was a disappointment. Below average album, with no stand out tracks. Shame. Not worth a listen.

Garbage I've always loved their singles so figured it was time to try the albums themselves. "Supervixen" is a fantastic opening track, but the rest of the album doesn't really feel coherent. Some good individual songs, but rarely does it ever really come alive - the aforementioned "SuperVixen", as well as "Stupid Girl", "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Not My Idea" are the stand out tracks. I'm half and half on if it's worth a listen, it's got some good tracks but really you can probably just get the best out of it by listening to the stand out tracks as it feels a lot like Garbage are finding their footing as a band with their first effort.

13. Maverick a Strike by Finley Quaye (1997)

14. Mandatory Fun by Weird Al Yankovic (2014)

First Weird Al album I've actually bought since Poodle Hat in 2003, because Amazon put it on sale for $5 and I wanted to join in on the "get Weird Al Yankovic a Billboard #1 album" push. Sort of a weird one to review because I'd already heard like half of the songs on the album as part of his clever social media strategy of putting out a new music video on various different sites over the course of a week. The songs that weren't released as part of that include a particularly great version of his usual polka medleys of songs he didn't write parodies for (I think the older I get the more I appreciate them because I get to go "OH I know that song hahaha I'M NOT THAT OLD YET RIGHT hahahahaha :("), a Foo Fighters style parody that with slightly rewritten lyrics could probably just be a Foo Fighters song, a pretty limp Imagine Dragons parody song, and the usual album-ending endless song that has really clever lines but I don't think matches the deranged brilliance of "Albuquerque" or "Trapped in the Drive-Thru." Probably on par with "Genius in France," though.

uh, I guess this isn't a review. I mean, like. It's a Weird Al album? It's a pretty good one. If you like Weird Al you'll like it? Anyway.

Best Track: since I'd already heard so many of the songs off the album I'm just going to make all of them fair game, so the winner is actually "Mission Statement." It's a Crosby, Stills, and Nash style parody that is absolutely nothing but corporate jargon and buzzwords, and I adore it because for my editing job I seriously have to parse through that jibberish and pretend like they're real sentences that make sense.

Surfer Blood made a decent album, nothing impressive.
Only complaint about Discovery is that it is too long, and that leads to tracks that come off as filler, don't have the raw charm of the Homework album. The singles are special though, love the hits from the album.
Silk Rhodes were okay.
Kings of Leon surprised me, enjoyable stuff on that album.
Adios Amigos was enjoyable, think I'll have "The Crusher" in my head for some time. Good stuff and bad stuff on the album but pretty good overall.

15. Rocket to Russia by The Ramones (1977)

It's weird with these early Ramones albums because I always end up getting the extended editions with demos and live concerts so on, and so there are some songs on Rocket to Russia that I've already heard multiple times on my versions of The Ramones and Road to Ruin. It's probably warped my ability to process the albums as their own things instead of this sprawling diaspora of songs that bleed into each other (along with the fact that it's The Ramones, so the songs are short and frequently similar and sometimes the transitions are so slick that I don't even realize that the next track's begun until fifteen seconds in). But yeah so anyway this is good. It's the one with "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" and "Rockaway Beach!" I like hearing a couple of the poppier tracks in here, like the "Do You Wanna Dance?" cover and "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow."

Best Track: Discounting the obvious two that I've known for like fifteen years, let's say "We're a Happy Family," because I'm a sucker for takedowns the concept of the idyllic nuclear family and this is a nice, caustic one that builds on itself with every verse.

Figured as it's the New Year I'd start this off on the first day of the year.

1. Less Than Jake - Borders and Boundaries

2. Metz - Metz

3. Best Coast - Crazy For You

Borders and Boundaries was an old favourite from way back in the day that I haven't listened to for a good few years. Forgot just how much I liked LTJ back in the day. Often people talk about Hello Rockview being their best album but for me this tops it.

Metz's album is pretty good - sounds like Japandroids and Unsane's bastard offspring, with a hint of Nirvana's Bleach.

Crazy for You is a good half-hour or so listen, but best served in the summer.

111 in 95 days. 16 ahead of schedule. 6 lost during Christmas which was expected, buffered more than I thought I'd lose from my ahead count by getting a few albums in during Christmas and Boxing Day downtime with the family (you know the time, everyone's full from food and can't be arsed).

No real thoughts to add because for the most part it was over a week ago, but that means none stood out as "must listen" albums, even though they had good songs.

113. 'Does This Look Infected?' by Sum 41 (6th January 2015)

113 in 96 days. 17 ahead of schedule. One gained thanks to two short (just over 30 mins) albums.

Both albums were pretty good and had some solid tracks. AKNF had "Fat Lip", "Rhythms", "Motivation", "In Too Deep", "Handle This" and "Pain For Pleasure", all of which were good songs, though the album lacked cohesion. DTLI had more album cohesion but inferior best tracks which were "The Hell Song", "Over My Head", "Still Waiting", "My Direction" and "All Messed Up".

Here's a great "GoGo is an idiot" moment; on my first listenthrough of the album I was like "wow, this is kind of underwhelming, it's just a lot of faint R&B noodling." Then I looked at the volume on my mp3 player. It was set to nearly 0. D'oh. At the noise level that a normal human would listen to, this is pretty good and I think will only get better on relistens. D'Angelo's an artist who I basically completely missed out on when he was active the first time, though, so I wasn't expecting his singing voice to be as mumbly as it is (a good comparison is some of the Sly and the Family Stone songs where Sly is sing-talking). I always have a harder time getting into singers like that, so right now I'm more into the grooves and layering of the instruments and such, which is really great. Once the weather starts heating up I really want to listen to this again while driving.

Best Track: "The Door" is the first time in a while where I've listened to an album not knowing what the singles were and not picked one (though it could become one yet). Maybe I just like whistling.

After having watched Mr Bean's Holiday which had a Matt Willis cover of The Primitives "Crash" the other day, I figured I'd give McBusted a shot. It's not bad to be honest, I can't say anything stuck out to me, but it was nothing offensive either. "Getting It Out" was probably the best track, but it's all pretty middle of the road stuff.

Was a suggested album on Play Music so gave it a shot, it was okay but nothing really great like 'Ain't No Rest For The Wicked' that was on Borderlands. 'Halo' was a pretty good track, but it was the only real stand out.

Thickfreakness was decent, like the old blues sound of the Black Keys but there was never a stand out track on the album.
I cannot imagine the disappointment for Daft Punk fans for this album after Discovery. Title track is probably the pick of it.
Modest Mouse had a lovely album. Float Song, probably the best known song, isn't even the best on it. The Good Times Are Killing Me is one of my favourite conclusions on an album.
Like the style change from Plan B and it has a good start but it starts to become dull around the centre and doesn't finish well enough to make up for it.
Actually enjoyed Enema of the State!
Coexist was dull.
Melophobia had some good tracks on, thought it was an enjoyable album on the whole.
