i'm cautiously optimistic for the mets as i am every year but with harvey coming back and the braves rebuilding i think the mets have a chance to compete they probably won't get past washington unless washington suffers a huge injrty that just ruins them the marlins could sneak in there too

I agree, but I think the smartest move Atlanta made was getting a very consistent pitching staff (both rotation & bullpen) for far less money than what the Nats have in theirs.

That's what I mean. They're going to be banking so much this season to splurge on whatever the hell they want next year and make a push then. Let Washington shoot their wad this year.

I applaud Washington for the move. I think that much money and that many years for a 30 year old pitcher is bound to come back to bite them eventually, but they're not worried about that. They have a very legitimate window of contention for the next few years and they're trying to cash in before it slams shut.

As a Mets fan I obviously hate that my division rival made such a move, but I could never blame a team for doing it.

the deal is even more expensive than initially reported. it's 7 years, $210 million however they will "only" pay $105 million over the 7 years he's on the team and $105 million is deferred between 2022-28. They're going to be paying him for a very, very long time.
