I feel like you have to have some hardcore gambling issues to be betting on who will end up with the most home runs. That's more of a toss-up than who will win the divisions, if you ask me.

The Padres' offseason bonanza continues as they sign James Shields to a 4 year deal. Money not fully disclosed yet but believed to be around $75 million or so. The Padres were the real winners of the Shields-for-Myers trade.

So what happened with the Padres, where they went from cellar dwellers to free spenders? Did they get a new owner, or one that just hit the lottery?

It's amazing how much money you can save if you don't spend a dime for a dozen years.

I'm not sure it's the wisest move when you're in a division were LA can alway out spend you, and San Francisco is, somehow, always good.

They'd have been better served building with youth and spending the money to keep their good players.

I have no idea why they're spending all this money and throwing away their farm system. If they don't win anything this year or next they get rid of everyone and start a rebuilding process they were pretty close to finishing.

Padres, like many teams, are benefiting from a new TV deal.

Last winter, the top four Padres prospects were Austin Hedges, Matt Wisler, Max Fried and Hunter Renfroe. Of those four, only Fried was traded away. That's pretty impressive for a team that made that many upgrades.
