Best moments in sport

Can't remember if I've made this thread before or if I imagined it during a fever dream. Your most favourite moments in sport?

For me it goes something like this (not ranked):

Tony Hawk's 900 at the X-Games. What a moment. Sure, the competition was over but he wanted that 900 so badly, try after try he ballsed it up until he got it, and boy, it was a sketchy landing but he did it.

England 4-1 Netherlands at Euro 96. I remember this like it was yesterday, Shearer and Sheringham, bang. Couldn't stop laughing at anything orange for the rest of the night. And that Netherlands goal sent the Jocks out, can't get much better than that. Also, THAT goal from Gazza against the Jocks and THAT penalty save by Seaman. Oh boy.

Greg Rutherford in the long jump at the Olympics. I loved the way he waffled into the mic that was stuck in his face, what a moment.

Mo Farrah at the Olympics. When he won the 10k I was in bits, but the thing that I liked most was that it seemed that he turned around when he crossed the finish line and was like "WTF, a white dude is second?!". Wonderful.

Oxford 2-3 Orient. I was at that game, it was the match that got us promoted. I remember being in the crowd and word came thru that (Northampton, maybe? Can't remember) scored which would mean that we would be going up and then we went up the other end and Lee Steele banged in a goal. What a day.

Andy Murray at Wimbledon. I was sitting in the front garden with the laptop out showing the tenis, a couple of cold beers and the parasol out at the old family home and had a great time. A beautiful summers day, a cracking game of tennis and some cold brews.

Ray Houghton vs Italy, 94 World Cup. Since England didn't qualify I was supporting R. Ireland. THAT goal in the opening game was incredible. I met Ray Houghton once when I was working as a photographer and I told him that goal was one of the best I've seen. Nice bloke, loves a good fry-up.

Wycombe vs Leicester, Roy Essandoh. Roy of the Rovers stuff. Ceefax? FA Cup? Shock exit? Has it all.

Carlisle vs Plymouth, Jimmy Glass. I bet he can still get a free pint in any pub in Carlisle. What a moment, it was like Fifa14 except that he 'keeper scored.

Honourable mention to Germany vs Brazil in the 2014 WC.

CYCLING:

Cavendish's 2010 Champs Elysees win when he just exploded past the other guys. It looked staggering and I marked out so hard.

Also when he pulled back 10+ metres on Haussler to win the 2009 Milan San Remo.

Personally, Rovers' big triumphs are all right up there - promotion at Stoke with the last ever "Golden Goal" against Dagenham, James Hayter's diving header to beat Leeds at Wembley five years later, and our JPT victory in extra time at Cardiff in 2007. Of course, topping them all off was "that" finish at Brentford, Trotta hits the bar at one end and we go up the other end to win the title instead of dropping into the play offs.

Attending the Tour de France last year is also a huge highlight for so many reasons.

Overall, it is hard to beat the exploits of our Olympians. "Super Saturday"'s best moment for me took place hours before anyone won gold in the stadium, but instead came when Kat Copeland and Sophie Hosking won the rowing, among other great performances on the river. Our cyclists also provided some great highlights.

Andy Murray winning Wimbledon was such a brilliant day too. There are few sportspeople that I root for as much as Andy having followed his entire career, and that was a beautiful summers day enjoying a barbecue with friends and watching Murray reach the pinnacle. Superb.

One more - has to be this moment, which sums up everything that is wonderful about football (unless you're a Man Utd fan, I guess). A table of about 10-12 of us went INSANE when this went in in the pub, especially as Man Utd fans who had populated the other side of the bar had began singing about winning the title moments before.

It still gives me goosebumps every time I see it and I'm not even close to being a Man City fan.

Perhaps snooker isn't a 'trendy' sport today, but I consider this one of the great sporting battles ever. On one side, you've got Steve Davis, a man who had dominated the game and brought it to new heights, and on the other, Dennis Taylor, more of an everyman who had never won the title and who had just come off the death of his mother. With Davis leading 8-0 and Taylor looking down and out, what followed was both one of snooker's greatest comebacks and the most dramatic final frame in history. With the scores locked at 17-17 and just the final black ball remaining, this is tension epitomised, and you can see the crowd entranced by every shot. Seeing Taylor finally sink the black and seal victory, couple with the roar of the crowd that ensued, never gets old for me, even as someone who likes Steve Davis.

And putting the excitement of the match itself aside, this was a huge landmark in the history of televised sport in Britain. 18.5 million people tuned in to watched the final moments after midnight, which makes for record viewing figures for both BBC2 and any British programme after midnight. Just think about that. 18.5 million British people watching snooker at the same time. There's not a chance of that happening now.

John McDonald is a former Blue Jays player who was known exclusively for his defense. He could never really hit, but he was amazing in the field.

His father was dying and his last wish to his son was that he would go out and hit a home run. In his first game back, on Father's Day, John McDonald does just that. Amazing.

A nothing goal in the grand scheme of things, but I remember going mental.

Man, I remember that so well. Just gone down to London for an interview with SI Games, and rushed to find a pub to watch the rest of the game and entered one just in time to see that goal. The place went mental.

Also, Tanc never showed up. >_>
