The Essential Gangster/Crime Film List

So I've come to the conclusion that I am a huge fan of crime/gangster/mob movies, and really want to come up with a list of the best of these sorts of films to watch over some time just to have a majority of the genre covered. I am currently in the middle of the first Godfather installment, and yes, I haven't seen any of the Godfather films, so please don't hate me. I do love movies like Donnie Brasco, Heat, Goodfellas, Ocean's Eleven (original and re-make); so EWB, give me more to watch!

I do, but he also included crime films which doesn't automatically mean gangster/mob/underworld type films. Both of those films are technically crime films, one based on true events where the character repeatedly goes to a prison.. filled with criminals, not boy scouts.

Sexy Beast and Layer Cake are both pretty great modern gangster films, especially the former. If you wanted to check out the origins of the genre back in the 1930's, definitely check out Little Caesar and Pepe Le Moko.
