I had a skim through most of the on topic points of this and I couldnt find anything relating to the true source for all this which was ethics in gaming journalism, GamerGate started due to reports of games journalists offering good reviews at a cost. After that the report of Zoe Quinn having a positive review of one of her games which had been given mixed to negative reviews elsewhere based on the fact that she was in a relationship with the reviewer. After attacks started being taken against Quinn, a selection of feminists with an agenda hijacked the campaign and forced it into being something for their cause completely ignoring and refusing to acknowledge anything other than what they had turned it into.

Wrong.

It started because Quinn's ex is a douche, and riled up the chans to attack her. This mythical review, as far as I'm aware, doesn't exist, and any relationship between Quinn and the reviewer started after the game released. There's documentation to back this all up, in the form of chat logs where the entire campaign of harassment is planned out.

Of course, there's also the fact that the gators where kicked out of 4chan, and now reside at 8chan alongside child pornographers. The company you keep.

Is there a discussion to be had about ethics in journalism, yes, of course, Brian Williams showed us that. However, GamerGate, is not, and never was, intended to be about that, it was a dedicated campaign by a jilted ex-lover to destroy a woman's life and career.

You can stop now.

I find it really surreal seeing people say things like this in real life. It's such full-tilt crazy.

Yes, this whole started because of a bitter ex-boyfriend. If we found an ex-girlfriend of yours and she said you had a small penis, should we take that as the Gods honest truth and start a smear campaign against you and everyone who says your hung like an elephant? No, because its insanely stupid that people would take an ex's word as law without any sort of proof, yet thats exactly what happened with GG.

And if you think journalists don't offer good reviews for a cost in any publication, your delusional. Game Informer gives a game an 8/10 or 4 star or however they rate their reviews, then 10 pages later theres a full page ad for said game. You think that review wasn't paid for? PC World reviews an video card with NVIDIA chipset, then theres an ad touting how great NVIDIA chipsets are, again, you think that review wasn't bought?

GG is all about misogynistic men who now have a rallying cry about "ITS ALL ABOUT ETHICS!"

When this all started I did a search on what it was all about and most of what I found tended to focus on the it started as an ethics issue argument. Beyond that I couldnt be bothered with the whole sexism arguments because from what I see it tends to be "if you dont agree with me you are sexist and if you challenge what I say you are a troll".

I do agree there are things that need to be addressed around content in video games to be more equal however I do argue that some of the arguments, specifically those from Anita Sarkeesian are either trivial or you can clearly see they have some sort of agenda. I do seek out opposing arguments to her videos because if you take your information from one source you get a one sided argument, and before people bring it up yes I understand the hypocrisy to my previous post however from what I understood it was based on the information before this all started which was not covered in other areas.

Why do feminists always seem to weasel their way into your arguments if it's about "ethics"? Why are the people trading favors for reviews always female developers and why are the favors always OMG SECKS!? Sarkeesian promised to put out a product that people wanted to see, people gave her money to do so, and then she did so, so obviously there is an audience for what she's saying. I don't even understand what you're mad about anymore, but it seems to mostly boil down to "girls are talking about a thing I like." Be specific. Your only specific complaint so far has been that Zoe Quinn slept with a reviewer for a good review, which was, again, not true.

As others have probably already pointed out, you're dead wrong. The journalist Quinn was in a relationship with never reviewed the game, and Quinn had already been targeted over a full year before any accusations of 'sex for good reviews' were made up by her asswipe of an ex.

P.S. Gjoni (her ex) was also helping orchestrate the attempt to harass her from an IRC channel. Many people in the IRC channel were outright stating that their ultimate goal was to get her to kill herself. The GamerGate hashtag was created by Adam Baldwin TO REFER TO QUINN'S RELATIONSHIPS. I can show you the tweet--it is literally nothing except #GamerGate and a video about Zoe Quinn having sex. But yeah, tell me again how it was about ethics from the first.

It was never an ethics issue. Quinn was targeted when Depression Quest was up for being Greenlit on Steam, trying to tank the vote. She was then targeted when her ex-boyfriend jumped onto 4chan to try to rile up a harassment campaign against her - inventing that she had slept with someone to get a good review. He then spent several hours coaching the leaders of this campaign on the best ways to target her.

She was doxxed, hacked and had death threats said against her. This is much about ethics in games journalism as the war in Iraq was about WMDs.

And again, paid for reviews are a legitimate problem. The firing of Jeff Gerstmann (who's spoken out against gamergate) over giving Kane and Lynch a bad review in particular was a disgusting situation. But gamergate is doing shit all about situations like this. All they care about is silencing feminist opinions, like when they campaigned against Gamasutra. And any misguided people who joined gamergate because they actually care have only contributed to making "ethics in game journalism" a punchline. Gamergate started as an attempt to bestow legitimacy on the targeted harassment of Zoe Quinn over a review that never existed. It has accomplished nothing in regards to it's stated ethics objective, and never will, because they are a joke. Gamergate only makes it harder for people who actually care about games journalism to improve the situation, and it's destroyed several women's lives in the process.

Lets also not to forget that their targets are all women. Former NFL punter Chris Kluwe posted an article on why GameGaters piss him off and heard nothing about it. Actress Felicia Day said she's afraid of GG and was immediately doxxed

So yes, the whole "movement" is just a ruse for basement dwelling fedora wearing neckbeards to express their misogyny in public

I believe it was Sousa who said it, When 4chan, the loony bin of the Internet, kicks you off for being too crazy, something is fucking wrong with you
