Tonight is David Letterman's last show

Recommended Posts

Anyone else plan on watching? I've honestly never cared a whole lot for Letterman, but I realize the importance of the man and his role in late night TV. A lot of comedians, late night hosts, etc. have paid tribute to him already, and here's Conan's tribute to him from tonight's episode of his show:

I echo the same sentiments about Letterman, really. But I'll probably watch.

Jimmy Kimmel's tribute was very heartfelt. He did it last night because he decided to run a re-run tonight out of respect.

Yeah, will definitely be tuning in. Dave's been on the air just about the same amount of time as I've been alive, in fact his short-lived morning show was cancelled on October 24, 1980, exactly one year to the day before I was born and his final show today is the same as my dad's birthday. Plus there's the whole Indiana connection, probably won't be another Hoosier with that much influence on national television for some time. I don't pretend to be his biggest supporter, but I always preferred him over Leno and I respect all that he has done. Just like Johnny Carson influenced comedians of Letterman's generation, Letterman had a profound impact on a lot of this generation's comedians. Yeah, he hasn't been as cutting edge as he was in the 80's and 90's, but this is still a milestone event in television that can't be missed. Even for shows I never watched or haven't tuned in to for years, I always try to watch the final episode of a show if possible, if its been running long enough and has been hyped up well enough just for the whole sentiment of it all. Dave is the last connection to a bygone era in a lot of ways. After tonight, the last late night host left from the 80's will be finished, leaving Conan O'Brien and Jon Stewart as the longest running talk show hosts, until Stewart himself retires later this year. This decade has been a period of transition in late night TV and tonight represents one the last changing of the guard moments. I'll be glued to my TV for the entire hour-plus until Dave signs off for good.

I've never been much for these late night talk show guys, even the ones you guys here on EWB talk about.

Letterman was kind of different because he was such a dag. He made me think he was a talk show version of Daryl Somers(ask Ace :P) and I had a soft spot for him. I remember watching the old black & white tv in my room late at night and he'd be on and I'd catch the occasional Letterman show. Loved the top 10 and various other stuff. I always said that when I got older and was able to stay up longer I'd watch the Late Show all the time. Of course the time slot jumped around a lot and I was never able to settle into a routine of watching it.

Then it moved to Channel 10 from Channel 9/Win Tv where it had been on for years and they actually put it in a decent time slot that I could watch before bed and I loved it. Of course it didn't last and it was back to late night and I got out of the habit again and have barely watched the show in a long while.

I do notice that the final episode is apparently on at 9:45pm tonight, so I'm definitely catching that.

Semi interesting story, I used to think this supposed backstage worker(or assistant/whatever) that he'd occasionally have on was really cute and I liked their sometimes awkward back 'n forth. Then the next time I started watching again she was gone and I always wondered what happened to her. Turns out it was the woman he was supposed to be having an affair with and whose ex ended up trying to blackmail Letterman. So I didn't really see that coming.

Definitely watching. It's a shame how late night TV sort of lost its shine over the years, because it's taken away from all Letterman did. He's influenced all the other hosts that are going these days, in a big, big way, as obvious by all of their tributes to him.

She's nowhere near a big enough name for a final show guest, but I really love Amy Sedaris when she's with Dave and it makes me sad I won't be able to watch the two of them chatting every few months.

I'll be sad to see him go. I don't really know why but Dave has always been my favourite late night guy, especially for interviews, he isn't crazy or zany and neither tries to make it about him or be over ingratiating to the point of annoyingness.

Late night TV definitely has lost a lot of its luster, especially in the age of YouTube. But Letterman has been in this game longer than most of us have been alive and has been synonymous with late night. He helped push the envelope that Carson was unwilling to, and because of him we got Conan, Kimmel, Stewart, and Colbert.

It's funny about Leno that I usually loved all his cameos in other things but I could never be arsed to watch his show.

Back on Letterman, I just read some piece reflecting on his career and retirement from some bitter sounding right wing guy titled 'After Losing to Jay Leno, David Letterman’s Bitterness Cost Him His Indiana Soul' The comments that I read were pretty hilarious, like all of the the worst right wing cliched statements were there!

I got it DVRed. I started watching him around high school and was in love in for years. I fell out when I moved away to college and there became just too much to watch on TV. I quote him so many times without even intending to. He's the greatest ever.

I hope you gave it extra time. Pretty sure it was supposed to end 10 minutes ago and its still going

I did. Thanks to Twitter the news came out as the show was taping.

But that Taco Bell bit was so fucking funny
