The Thread Where We Discuss Golf

Monty, dressed in a sober dark blue jacket and yellow tie, looked as if he had just been appointed supreme commander of the free world. He stressed words like responsibility and honour and repeatedly said that he would leave no stone unturned.

Thomas Bjorn, the chairman of the tournament committee claimed that Monty's appointment had been unanimous. Bjorn said: "The whole committee unanimously thought that the man on my right was the right man to win the Ryder Cup and the right man to lead them into battle.

"What I felt was going to be a hard and difficult meeting turned out to be a pretty easy one. When we landed on Colin's name it was pretty obvious that [Wales] was where it was going to take us. When someone said we need "the best man for the job" it came straight away that the best man for the job in Wales would be Colin Montgomerie."

Monty's candidacy has been one of the worst kept secrets in sport since he came in to Ryder Cup favouritism from 50-1 on Betfair a couple of weeks ago. The European Tour chief executive George O'Grady said of the betting surrounding the appointment: "Any rumour that tarnishes golf's reputation concerns everybody.

"We investigated it. Betfair invited us to talk to us. The committee will be appalled that anyone even inadvertently leaked it. The sums were minuscule and we've completed any investigation we can take and we'll take great care in the future."

According to O'Grady, Betfair had claimed that newspaper stories had fed the plunge on Monty. It was a risible line to take, as the money went on first and then the newspapers reported it. There was a leak, but the European Tour are unlikely to make the culprit's name public.

Monty, however, was very public. Trying to look statesmanlike rather than a boy about to burst with pleasure, Monty said: "I promise that I will do everything I can to claim the Ryder Cup back in Wales in 2010." Montgomerie said that there is absolutely no chance of his trying to make the team in Wales and that any Ryder Cup points he won would be nullified. Montgomerie did, however, say that he would try to play his way back into the team in 2012 and he did not rule out the possibility that he would stand again for the captaincy for Gleneagles in 2014.

But he would not be drawn any further and returned the debate to Celtic Manor 2010, where he has a course named after him. Monty said: "We feel that something is missing on this table (in front of me) here. The last three Ryder Cup captains have had the privilege of sitting here with the Ryder Cup in front of them. We don't this evening. My goal is to make that come true for the next captain in 2012."

Many people expected Jose Maria Olazabal to be confirmed as that 2012 captain at the press conference in Dubai as part of a double announcement. But Bjorn said that the committee had decided to concentrate on Wales. Instead Monty announced Olazabal as the first of his assistant captains, saying: "It's obvious that Jose will be part of my team in Celtic Manor. I have great respect from him."

Monty and Olly go way back together, the Spaniard having beaten the Scot in the final of the 1984 Amateur Championship. Monty and Corey Pavin, the captain of the American team, also have history.

Both made their Ryder Cup debuts at the infamous "War on the Shore" at Kiawah Island in 1991 when Pavin donned camoflage and a desert storm cap. It wasn't enough to deter Monty who joined up with Bernhard Langer in a 2&1 defeat of Pavin and Steve Pate.

It was the first time the pair met in the Ryder Cup, but by no means the last. In 1993 Montgomerie teamed up with Faldo to beat Pavin and Lanny Wadkins. But in '95 Pavin and Tom Lehman beat Monty and Faldo on the final green.

Monty of course knew that he had a winning record against Pavin and was quick to flag it up. No doubt Pavin will be just as quick to point out that he won their last encounter. The banter has already started and will only get feistier as the match approaches. We don't yet know if Monty will be a great captain, but he will certainly be an entertaining one.

Try and beat us now you bastards :shifty:

yusssssssss.

and Sandy Lyle in 2012! Or whenever the Ryder Cup comes next. >_>

Would put Olazabal in at 2012, then let Sandy have 2014 when it returns to Scotland. That would be all kinds of awesome.

I also have just ordered my tickets for the British Open this year. Only an hour down the road from me :)

This thread isn't for discussing the PGA Tour or anything like that, unless people actually want to talk about Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson and stuff. No, this is a thread for the regular person who enjoys the game of golf. Post your set, where you play, how well you do, and all that stuff!

That is my set. Top Flite. Not an expensive or high quality set, but I got it last year and they fit my skill level. This summer I have started to really enjoy playing golf. I have been playing since I was 6 and have owned sets of clubs, but this is the nicest set I have owned and this is the first time I have ever really loved playing.

I usually play Par 3 courses like Pineview or Green Acres, but this summer I have also started to play longer courses in my area. I need to work out some kinks, though. I cannot swing my driver without sending the ball curving to the left (I am a lefty). Still, I feel like my swing is improving and I am just loving golf this year.

So, what clubs do you use? What has been your highlight so far this year?

Guest Mr. Potato Head

I don't even know what clubs I have, and I only go out maybe once or twice a year (with my dad). Really not a fan. Average about a 120.

My highlight will be when my parents finally get me the set of clubs they promised me for Christmas last year. I love playing golf, but I don't have my own clubs so I don't get to play very often.

Big tournament for Tiger in his comeback to golf. This is a course he has traditionally done very well at but given his recent run a lot of golf experts are saying it is more likely that he misses the cut here then it is that he wins here.

Will one of the young guns like McIlroy, Kim or even someone like Mahan or Westwood take the next step? Will we see an "old" guy make as has been the recent trend?

Between the World Cup and Golf this is setting up to be a good sports weekend.

Edit: By the way, if anyone is playing the "Best Ball" game on ESPN I have a group there called "Ayaz's Group" pw is espn

Would I be right in saying that Tiger, Westwood and Els don't start for another 3hrs or so? They displayed the start times earlier and I was sure it was around the 9.30pm region, my time. Hopefully, that's the case as I can watch the France-Mexico game beforehand...

Leaderboard and Start times

Yup, they'll be starting just minutes after the France/Mexico game ends.
