Television Shows That Over Stayed Their Welcome

It's cos series 1 always has to be smart. Series 2 ups things a bit to keep people hooked and get the show re-commissioned....But then after that they decide "hey, now we can make a longer arc!" and series 3-5 is always a longer story about chasing a serial killer or something and relationships get more confused because they figure they have more time to sort it all out.

Doesn't The Walking Dead fit the bill as well? I haven't watched it myself but from what I've heard and read it started out good but got worse as the show progressed.

Eh, aside from the lack of cast death, I think Walking Dead is the same as ever. It was never as good as the hype said it was, it was just the hype of a well produced zombie TV show. Even in early seasons they had some major crap to work with.

They tend to do well when they stick to the comics, or do single character driven episodes.

Friends

More to do with their constant repeats, I get and enjoyed it when it first aired and then catching up on missed episodes through repeats the first couple of times, but do you not think a 4-6 hour block of episodes on two channels on a daily basis is a little overkill?

Like Family Guy and American Dad on ITV2 (was BBC3) for 3 hours every night.

I totally agree, especally when they sandwich a new episode between old episodes, I stopped bothering and only caught American Dad on catch up.

Y'all realise you don't have to watch them, right? :P

I agree, but when you are airing 9 hours of content out of 21 hours broadcast time, mostly during the daytime it gets annoying, I tend to watch the Discovery channels during the daytime now.

Yeah, but it always takes a couple of episodes for you to realise that the show has jumped the shark. By the end of season three, my interest was waning, the entire show was pretty much being carried by Scott Wilson and once he'd gone, there was really nothing left. I made it to about halfway into the episode where Daryl and Beth are alone and I realised I was just watching it as background noise, so I stopped.

I'm going to go for low hanging fruit and say Supernatural.

That series literally was written to end post Season 5, but the huge cult following it had pretty much has sustained new seasons ever since. And whilst i've tried to stay in it, they've jumped the shark one too many times. And how can you 'improve' on killing Lucifer himself? (Until they had him 'return' in S11, 4noraisin)

Anyways, I stopped caring when they killed off most of the supporting cast to 'return to the roots'. And really, the only thing the series is about nowadays is gratuitous fan service.

I still like Supernatural, I think the only season I've hated on it was the Leviathan season ("we can call a guy Dick, guys!" and killing of Bobby because "reasons"). The rest are okay, with varying levels of fun episode to episode. I think Metatron may have been amongst my favourite TV villains to be honest, and I was so happy he got more than a season to do his thing.

Ditto Walking Dead. The first two seasons were actually fairly intriguing. As soon as The Governor was introduced my interest rapidly declined as it became outright misery porn.

The other obvious answer is House. It's been said around here before, but it should have ended with the special two-hour episode that kicked off Season 6 (featuring Lin Manuel-Miranda!)

You're rapidly declining outright misery porn!

The X-Files. Lasted about 3 seasons too long.

ER should have ended at least a couple of seasons sooner than it did.

The original Law & Order should have ended when McCoy got promoted to DA.

Its about time for the original NCIS to end.

CSI should have ended about four years before it got cancelled.

I'm surprised that The Simpsons is still running.

Personally, I enjoyed the first four seasons. But I have no clue how this show has become that strong and stayed that strong over a 13+ season running. They've literally gotten into the top 3 at a point where most series pretty much fall off the cliff viewer wise, and since then they've stayed there. It's mind-boggling.

But yeah, with one of their main characters 'dying' a few seasons back, and one of their longest running actors calling it quits (Michael Weatherly), it's really time for the series to just write to an ending and have Gibbs get his re-re-retirement party...

Also, David McCallum is getting on there in age I think, and i'd loath if he passed away and they'd no doubt had to write an episode around it.

Additionally, CSI shoulda ended when William Petersen stopped.

---

And another one for posterity sake... CSI: Cyber, that one overstayed their welcome before its pilot.
