The thread where Kirkland bitches about Power Rangers.

Every action scene/zord scene in the English-speaking version was from the Japanese original, just overdubbed.

Only the unsuited scenes were acted by the US actors.

CSAMH - thinking he's ruining childhood memories since 2017 when in fact everyone knew it anyway.

Actually wrong a little. In season three the american actors got their own high quality  suits instead of the crappy ones and filmed additional Morphed fights after the extra footage they ordered from Toei ran out. That's why there's a big upswing in quality in late MMPR and more scenes of unmorphed rangers interacting with Morphed Rangers

Bought a thing today. I'm still not behind this movie but I thought this looked cool for 3 dollars.

So thanks to James Rolfe's noob videos about the power rangers I learned that is all based on a Japanese show which runs even longer? And all of the fight scenes are used from that show. Awesome.

You just came down to the post box without reading the thread, didn't you? :P

Lost Galaxy('99) is where I stopped being huge on it for a while because of the complete cast change that had no connection to previous rangers. They just threw new people at me and I wasn't feeling it. I watched the first couple of Lightspeed Rescue('00) and Time Force('01) after and all of Dino Thunder('04) but didn't get fully back on board till Megaforce('13).

I only ever saw it with the original line up (well, Rocky, Aisha and Adam joining too) and probably stopped watching not long after the movie came out so missed most of it. Don't have the time to catch up on it all now. As for this reboot... Every time I see the trailer I flip-flop between interest and dread. Not long to find out now which side of the coin it lands on when I see it.

Who is that guy with the big yellow mask in the middle of the American Power Rangers picture?

Never saw any of that!

I just liked the fact they were lost in space.

I watched a little bit when they were at the Ninja Rangers point. I think that was still the original series, can't remember. I just remember thinking their ninja forms were soooo coooool when I was a kid.

An openly gay superhero features in the new Power Rangers big screen outing in what is thought to be a film first.

Yellow ranger Trini, played by actress and singer Becky G, is depicted as having "girlfriend problems" in the film, according to early reviews.

Director Dean Isrealite told The Hollywood Reporter that Trini is "questioning a lot about who she is".

It comes as the live-action version of Beauty and the Beast features a gay character.

LeFou, played by Josh Gad, is seen in a brief scene described by the Disney film's director as a "gay moment".

Isrealite said of Trini's sexuality: "She hasn't fully figured it out yet. I think what's great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, 'that's OK'.

"The movie is saying, 'that's OK' and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe."

David Yost, who played the blue ranger in the 1990s TV series on which the film is based, told The Hollywood Reporter that "so many people in the LGBTQI community are going to be excited to see that representation".

The film version of the children's TV show is out on Friday.

Any time a film says it has a non-hetero character in it, hiiiii Deadpool, they cop out with something so fleeting you barely notice it. I already see this as cynical marketing about nothing.

Hollywood Reporter's got some more details

Spoiler
Quote

During Power Rangers' second act, there's a scene in which the titular heroes learn that the Yellow Ranger Trini (Becky G) is coming to terms with her sexual orientation, with one character assuming she's having "boyfriend problems," and soon realizing that perhaps she's actually having "girlfriend problems." It's a small moment, but one director Dean Israelite calls "pivotal" for the entire film.

Also, RJ Cyler told Screen Rant that his character (Billy/the Blue Ranger) has autism.

And here's Becky G talking to Screen Rant about Trini:

Quote

“Power Rangers has always represented diversity and they’re always been ahead of the curve on a lot of things and although it may be a touchy subject for some people, I think it’s done in a very classy way, and not only that, in a way that’s really real, because you don’t know, Trini doesn’t know herself, and it’s that moment where she says out loud, ‘I’ve never said any of this out loud’ and that line, where, you know, Zordon says ‘You must shed your masks to wear this armor.’ It’s true. People should accept themselves for who they really are and be proud of that and take ownership of that first and learn that self love to really be happy; and I think that’s why Trini never found her purpose just yet, until she met them and that’s why she never really learned to love herself, because she didn’t accept who she really is just yet.”

I loved Power Rangers for pretty much my entire childhood. I was 5 when it first aired here, I think, and I was maybe 12 or so when I stopped watching it. I kinda view everything after that with a weird curiosity but I don't ever really want to watch any Power Rangers programming ever again.

Having seen the trailer and snippets of early reviews... I don't hold out much hope for the new movie being something worth watching.

RE: Cloudy's post:

Billy having autism and Trini questioning her sexuality sure are things that the teenagers who talk to a giant head and fight monsters sent by a woman who lives on the moon needs to have.

Uproxx's review of it makes it sound like it can't tell whether it wants to be gritty and real or campy and dumb.

MOVIE SPOILERS:

Spoiler

At one point, Kimberly admits to distributing revenge porn of a classmate, and talks about how she thinks she's a horrible person and how she had to sit in a room with the classmate's father while he had to see these explicit photos of his daughter.

Then in a scene not long after that, there's a bunch of campy dialogue revolving around stopping Rita Repulsa from getting to Krispy Kreme. Also, a lot of the plot apparently centers around Krispy Kreme? And at one point there's a scene where Rita stops to eat a Krispy Kreme donut and that's all that happens in that scene?

http://uproxx.com/movies/power-rangers-review/

EDIT: You don't even see them suit up or morph or whatever until 92 minutes in (to a 124 minute movie). That's like, what, more than 75% of the film gone by at that point?

SECOND EDIT:

Quote

Rounding out the team is Trini (Becky G), who is getting some attention for being a gay Power Ranger. Personally, I found this scene frustrating because it was noncommittal and it reminded me a lot of what we saw in Beauty and the Beast with LeFou. Trini is basically asked point blank if she’s gay, and her answer is she doesn’t like labels. Which, in real life, fine. But in the movie studio world, this is the “have cake and eat it, too” way out.

I feel like they should have made Billy gay instead to kinda honor David Yost after all the shit he got from Saban  productions on the original show.
