I could have sworn we already had a Star Trek thread?

Either way, I'm cautiously optimistic about this. Is it 13 eps they are doing?

Iirc it was 13 episodes, yeah. And at an alleged 5-7 million in budget per episode, they really want to go all out to deliver a big prime time sci-fi Star Trek show.

Whether or not the US viewing public can deliver enough loyal fans to get prime time numbers to a Star Trek show, i'm personally less than confident about. It's never really been a prime-time drawing concept, and I don't feel the 12 years of waiting and the three films are going to make all that much a different after the first couple of episodes.

Then again, I am cautiously optimistic, because it's been too long since there was Star Trek on the telly.

I'm not even "cautiously optimistic".  Only the first episode will be broadcast.  The rest will be exclusive to the CBS(?) streaming service.  I pay for Netflix.  I can watch TNG and DS( happily until the end of time.  I have no motivation to pay for the streaming service just to watch Star Trek Discovery

Production started on Tuesday? I thought the show was supposed to premiere about now?

It was delayed to May/June, but there's speculation is may come later than that now. Still pegged to be a 2017 release though.

Did they ever reveal who would play the Captain? I know the second in command is the main character, but I don't recall ever seeing the Captain casting.

I don't believe so, no.

According to Wiki, the confirmed cast / roles:

Spoiler

Sonequa Martin-Green as Rainsford (referred to as 'Number One')
Doug Jones as Saru - a science officer as lieutenant grade
Anthony Rapp as Stamets - a science officer that specialises in fungi
James Frain as Sarek (great casting I think!)
Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiu, of the USS Shenzhou
Shazad Latif as Kol - commanding officer of the kilngons
Chris Obi as T'Kuvma - a Klingon leader
Mary Chieffo as L'Rell - a battle deck commander on the Klingon ship.

What? :( I was going to give this a chance but like hell I am paying for a CBS streaming service. What the hell would I use it for? Mega NCIS binge? :(N):

I think the streaming thing will kill it. It will either end up cancelled or moved to normal tv.

Also, have they said if this is Abramsverse or original universe? Because if its Abramsverse, my interest is 1000% gone.

It's the Prime universe, and it takes place ten years before the original mission, although we don't know if that's ten years before the Cage or ten years before Kirk came along.

Interestingly that also places it at around the same time as the events in JJ, because everything in JJ was accelerated a bit.

Ugh. I want a post-TNG/DS9/Voyager series. Not another pre-TOS one.

Guess I'll just keep getting my Trek fix by playing Star Trek Online for now.

DS9 relaunch novels are good.
