EWB's favourite games of the 2000's - Voting Thread

Recommended Posts

Better late than never!

I think it's time to find out what games from the noughties (that sounds weird) are the favourites of EWB. Any game released from January 1st 2000 to December 31st 2009 are eligible.

Voting instructions shamelessly stolen from my 90's voting thread:

Voting instructions and other tidbits:
- Vote for 15 games. Less is fine. More is not.
- Your number 1 vote will receive 15 points, number 2 will receive 14 points, and so on until number 15 which will receive 1 point. Vote accordingly.
- Your voting criteria is completely up to you - as long as the game was released within the determined time period.
- Put the game name (full name please, no abbreviations) first and then in brackets put the console it was released for. If the game was released for multiple consoles put down the console you played it on.

And now, my list:

1. Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords (Xbox)

2. Banjo-Tooie (Nintendo 64)

3. Pokemon Gold/Silver (Gameboy)

4. Dragon Age: Origins (Xbox 360)

5. Jade Empire (Xbox)

6. Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic (Xbox)

7. Mass Effect (Xbox 360)

8. Soul Calibur 2 (Xbox)

9. Halo 3 (Xbox 360)

10. WWE Smackdown: Here Comes the Pain (PS2)

11. Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii)

13. WWF No Mercy (Nintendo 64)

14. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (Xbox)

1. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (GCN) - Absolute classic that, had it been marketed properly, wouldn't be quantified with "cult" status. Groundbreaking mechanics (and not just the sanity effects which by themselves were phenomenal), fascinating lore and storyline, and memorable characters (even for having little screentime Xel'lotath remains one of my favorite villains of all time). Pretty much THE reason I got a GameCube was for this game. And the only reason I still have one.

2. Fire Pro Wrestling Returns (PS2)- 500 edit slots, endless possibilities, and the best match simulation of any video game ever.

3. City of Heroes (PC)- One of the most open character creators of all time, a lovingly crafted world, absolutely fun to play and the Virtue server was hands down one of the greatest online communities I've ever been in. Absolute masterpiece that was killed off far before it's time.

4. Persona 4 (PS2)- It was hard to decide which I liked better, this, 2, or 3. In the end I chose the one with my favorite storyline, and favorite character (Naoto Shirogane).

5 Total Extreme Warfare 2005 (PC)- Only because TEW10 doesn't count. Still a better overall experience than EWR was.

6. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)- Best story of an MGS game and second best play experience behind 5.

7. Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines (PC)- Probably the most obscure game on my list. Amazing storyline, wonderfully sculpted characters and atmosphere, and warts and all, one of the best first-person RPGs ever created. If only Activision didn't treat this as a cash grab. It's a shorter, but more fulfilling, experience than more recent games (such as the Bethesda RPGs) and that's why it's this high up on this list.

8. Battletech: Firestorm (Arcade)- First time I went to Dave and Busters in Miami, I saw this and was in awe. Then I played it and was in more awe. I WAS PILOTING A MOTHERFUCKING MECH IN A MOTHERFUCKING COCKPIT. I was legit sad when they removed the pods and to this day while i still occasionally go to D&B (the food's good) the magic kind of died for me when I saw the empty space where the game used to be.

9. Ogre Battle 64: Knights of Lordly Caliibur (N64)- The last great N64 game. Never beat it, but I fully intend to one day.

10. Fallout 3 (PS3)- Only because New Vegas was too late. Still a great experience.

11. Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3)- While the later games were all better, this was just too much fun not to include on this list. I loved every bit of it. Yes, even the final stage.

12. BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger (PS3)- I play fighting games for the story. And few have a richer story than BlazBlue.

13. Grand Theft Auto Vice City (PS2)- My favorite of the GTA series. Probably because of my Miami bias, tbf.

14. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (PC)- KOTOR2 had better gameplay but this had a better story (the plot twist making less than zero sense aside) and pacing. Lightsabers should never be strength based though. Just saying.

15. Pokemon Gold/Silver (GBC)- The best Pokemon game. Shame emulation cannot replicate the IR feature of the GBC.

Honorable Mentions: Guilty Gear XX (PS2), UFC Undisputed (PS3), Animal Crossing (GCN), Police 911 (Arcade), You Don't Know Jack (Flash Reboot) (PC), EWR 4.2 (PC)

Edited mine to do the "one per franchise" thing too. I consider EWR and TEW seperate franchises, though.

It was the last thing on my list I thought of too, even though I definitely poured more hours into it than anything else on there. I think even though MMOs are video games, my mind doesn't really classify them with non-MMOs at all.

Yeah, that may have been my thing too, though CoH was the only MMORPG I spent any significant time playing (Tried WoW. Didn't like.)

Also fuck NCSoft for using Statesman as the mascot of their MOBA. As if I needed another reason to hate them. NEVER FORGIVE (#ForeverVirtue)

god, yeah, that pissed me off. How tone-deaf.

I tried WoW as well and it didn't work for me. TOR did for a year or so, but mostly as a single-player experience.

The only way it could have been worse if they used people like Ghost Widow or Positron, given the devs whose avatars were pretty much kept things going after Statesman's dev left and were among those fired for the holidays. ...Which they probably have in the game, but I don't play MOBAs and won't play an NCSoft one.
