Twin Peaks

I don't quite know how to start this topic, since most of the discussion on S3E8 has already occured in the General Television thread. It'd be neat if we could get all of the Twin Peaks posts moved over here, but I don't know if that's possible.

I think I'm going to rewatch all 8 episodes this weekend, since we don't get a new one until July 9th. I still need to watch Fire Walk With Me too.

Actually, that reminds me: the Woodsmen are in that convenience store scene in FWWM. It's confirmed now that the guy covered in soot that was in jail with William Hastings (Matthew Lillard) was a Woodsman... and in S3E8 we saw all of them circling around a gas station.... same store? I don't think we know for sure where it is in our world (if it is), or if it's inside the Black Lodge...

If you haven't watched Fire Walk With Me then you should.

I watched it just before the new series started and I am so glad I did because it sets you up perfectly for the new series.

I meant to watch Fire Walk With Me when Showtime had it on demand, but I never got around to it. I'm thinking about giving myself an early birthday present and ordering The Missing Pieces boxset, even though I already have the Gold Box edition of the original series. $45 is just too good to pass up.

Since we're on a two week break, I may need to go back through the first 2 seasons (possibly skipping much of 2) and Fire Walk with Me. Ya'll keep referencing stuff I'd completely forgotten. Plus, it'd be fun to rewatch the original Laura Palmer arc.

I was like wtf while watching the episode but twin peaks reddit with people posting theories and such helped put the pieces together for me and I can truly appreciate this episode as a peaks fan and as a student of film.

Tweeted it the other day but I am only really now getting into David Lynch's work outside of Twin Peaks and I find that with most of what he does I end up ruminating on it for a few days even if I don't really enjoy it that much at first. Almost always I'm struck by the use of sound.

Like, I didn't really find myself as super blown away about episode 8 when I watched it first but I still can't stop thinking about it.

It has my favorite title card gag of the series when it transitions forward a decade purely by using a title card on a static shot of desert.

Episode 8 with no exaggeration may be one of Lynch's finest works. It's exactly what I expected to come out of the Twin Peaks revival, and he did not disappoint even if he waited to jump this on people. Everything about it felt intentional and a detail he dropped for us to pick up.

I even feel like waiting to do an episode like this was intentional. Letting newer fans unfamiliar with his work get lured in, and letting older fans get lulled into believing he was going to be a touch more straightforward this time around for reasons. Then BANG!

This probably more than any of the other seven episodes so far I'll be rewatching again and again to try to notice everything he put in there.

This is verbatim what I just posted at DVDVR, but:

Quote

This episode probably had the most plot development out of all the previous 9 so far. It looks like everyone involved is on a collision course for the coordinates of the Black Lodge, and they're all finally getting the information that there are two Coopers (although the FBI is seemingly one step behind the Twin Peaks Sheriff Department on that one). I think this season is less about another murder happening in the vein of Laura Palmer, and more about finding Agent Cooper and bringing him back into our reality.

But, for everyone plot advancement we had tonight, you also had stuff like Sky Ferreira having a nasty rash and a 3 minute long scene of Diane sharing a cigarette with Cole.

Also, I'm watching The Nineties on CNN, and 5 minutes into it - Twin Peaks!

Really liked that last episode - not the strongest episode in the series, but the first that made it really feel like everything was coming together; we've got a much better handle now on how all the different subplots are going to end up convening, while still leaving a decent amount of intrigue.

I love silver fox deputy Bobby Briggs, he should be in it more. I especially like how Lynch is finding any excuse for him to give just a hint of his lip-wobbling over-acting and soap opera emoting from the original series.

Seeing Johnny Horne again was a real surprise - between that and Dougie being distracted by the girl in red heels and a skirt really makes me think that Audrey is showing up sooner rather than later. Her not having been in it yet makes me think that it's going to be a seriously big deal when she finally turns up. I'm going to freak out the moment her theme hits, especially if it starts playing before we actually see her.

Yeah, it was not the strongest episode but it gave some nice development. It was probably the most lighthearted episode thus far. Really like David Koechner and the other detectives. We also got the best Lucy/Andy moment. It was hilarious and incredibly sweet.

I'm just generally happy whenever we get to see Albert/Cole/Diane doing anything.  Matthew Lillard was fantastic too. His interrogation scene was both ridiculous and heartbreaking.

We are getting somewhere. Cooper texting Diane fills me with dread.

Speaking of Matthew Lillard, here's a thing...

Try clicking the "older journal entries" link.

And, if you highlight under all the "awards", there's some map coordinates, which correspond to a location in South Dakota.

Trying to work out if any one of the guestbook entries include any clues.

There's a theory on Reddit that since Dougie focused in on the light socket on the wall after the heels, that he needs his shoes back from when he teleported through the light socket from the Lodge to our reality (and lost his shoes along the way). Plus there's the whole "I am not your foot" thing that happened with Jerry (but probably isn't related).

I love the stuff with Jerry, because so much of Twin Peaks is spent trying to figure out if some characters are weird because they're connected to something supernatural, or just weird because they live in Twin Peaks.

I think the Jerry stuff is just a commentary on marijuana and how it's normalized in American culture now. i don't really think it plays into a bigger storyline or anything.

You know this was a very important episode when The Log Lady shows up - and also every time she does I get so happy and also so sad at the same time.

Holy shit Richard Horne is evil. This has to be the instigation for Audrey to show up.

Last week we find out that the cops are brothers and this week that the casino mob guys are also brothers (and we're getting some really good Jim Belushi). Two sets of people with the most interest in Dougie are brothers. Which is interesting.

I feel like this attempt to kill Dougie is what is going to go a long way to bringing the good Cooper back. It very much seems like the lodge spirits are protecting and guiding him and they won't let him come to harm.

Also, fuck Chad. I kinda think Lucy spotted him fiddling with the letters though.
