Dick Enberg's died. Retired from his commentating career last year, spent 25 years at NBC (from 1975-2000) as the lead play by play guy on NFL and MLB coverage.

Quote

Enberg’s voice has that air of Midwestern Nice to it, and it often sounds like he’s smiling as he speaks. His signature catch phrase—“Oh my!”—was an expression of his mother’s. Like [Vin] Scully, Enberg was raised in the era when radio—with its emphasis on storytelling—was the dominant medium, and so, like Scully, he understood how to spin a yarn, to personalize the experience. But with television, the visuals do the heavy lifting, and so Enberg’s approach was to complement that, mostly by getting out of the way. If Scully was everyone’s gracious old grandfather, Enberg was that friend who sat next to you on the couch, sharing your enthusiasm and your surprise.

Reading through the latest NBL Dick Joke Jamboroo (Drew Magary's weekly NFL column for Deadspin), and..

Quote

Blake Bortles only became a punchline after a mediocre 2016 season and a rocky patch this offseason. But before that, he was easily one of the most promising passers in football, and now his numbers are back up to where they were in 2015. Why, it’s almost as if he was always capable, but something happened during that bad stretch that clearly affected his on-field play and no one is saying what!

What does that mean?

Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles played more than half the 2016 season with a slightly separated right shoulder in addition to suffering from tendinitis in his right wrist.

Ravens a little lucky on that final play. Definitely looked like Hilton was being impeded.

Teams are bitching about Rodgers going back on IR, say he should be released.

Pedantic nonsense mostly, but an interesting what-if.

The funniest aspect of the report is that teams actually have a perverse Christmas wish that the Packers will be forced to release Rodgers. If that would happen (and it won’t), Rodgers would be subject to waivers. Which means Rodgers would be a Cleveland Brown.

Which means Rodgers would retire from the NFL, immediately.

Is there a loophole I’m not aware of as a reason for teams calling for them to release Rodgers?

If I understand it properly, it's because he got hurt, put on IR and brought back. They put him on IR the second time without a new injury, basically stashing him aside and freeing up a roster spot. You can't put healthy guys on IR, you have to waive them.

I think.

Yeah, so either they would have to waive him (as healthy) or admit he was cleared from IR without getting a full bill of health.

Josh Rosen's camp has already let it be known that, if the Browns commit to him as the #1 pick in the draft, he's likely to return to school.  No word on Sam Darnold yet but it would not shock me if he's in the same boat.  If both of them pull out of the draft, that sets up Josh Allen who has already declared to be the #1 pick, either to the Browns or perhaps to another team because there would now be a bidding war for the #1 pick with fewer top flight QBs available.

The Giants could be sitting at the #2 pick and potentially still miss out on their top three QB targets, therefore removing the one sliver of hope coming from this disaster of a season.

The Browns getting Josh Allen at #1 would so be a Browns move. That kid puts up great numbers against middle and lower tier college kids and sucks butts against even above average talent. He’s gonna bust so hard in the pros that him going to Cleveland almost seems like a date with destiny.
