Star Trek Discovery

Just appeared on my UK Netflix.

Anyone seen it yet? I think it was out yesterday in the US on that ridiculous CBS streaming site or whatever.

Looks like the first two episodes are up now. I'll be back in 90 minutes with a review...

It has that buff girl from The Walking Dead as the lead woman, I think.

It feels way too modern and slick. There's a timelessness about good Star Trek. This feels like something that is going to feel dated.

I liked it. Well, I liked the second episode. The first felt a little awkward. I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes. There are some, uh, issues with continuity but nothing that really hurts it. It's definitely more inspired by JJTrek than anything else, but that might just be a pilot thing. Hopefully it has some more thoughtful stuff as it goes on. But yeah, I'm looking forward to it.

Oh that daft punk robot is dumb as hell, I hope it got exploded

I am glad that Lobot was able to find work, that guy had it rough during the nineties so good to see he's wound up back on his feet.

Everything about Star Trek feels dated.

This. Each series is so obviously 60s/80s/90s when you look back on it. The iPod-esque Bridge decor of the Chris Pine films will feel the same in time. I don't see it as a problem though.

Yeah, I mean all science fiction is a product of its time. That's what science fiction is. No science fiction is timeless, it all sits slightly off kilter as it passes through the years.

Some elements of 1960s sci-fi might reflect contemporary concerns but that will be more coincidence than it being 'timeless'. Certain concerns ebb and flow, which is why you'll see a lot of science fiction that focuses on climate change/catastrophe at the moment. It's why post apocalyptic fiction was popular during the Cold War and will likely see a resurgence in the current political climate. And why the earliest science fiction written towards the end of the 19th century focuses on capitalism and socialism, social issues, women's rights, etc.

I've been sort of thinking about it off and on all day, and I think I really liked it. I think perhaps my initial trepidation was in having seen 750 episodes of star trek or whatever and maybe I spent the time thinking about how it fit, rather than just enjoying it. I'm gonna give it another go and see how I feel second time around.

Is it all available to watch now? Because that CBS service has a free trial so I would watch the whole season if I could

No, only two episodes. It's a weekly release. They're doing that thing where they split the season as well to maximise revenue

I liked the first episode, and thought some of the visual choices were really beautiful. Would like to watch more but the CBS All Access thing is obviously going to be a problem there. I'll probably wait until it's within a month of completion and buy a month then.
