Formula 1's Strategy Group has discussed awarding points down to 20th place instead of just the top 10, with a compromise of the top 15 among the possible alternatives.

F1's new management is continuing to explore possible changes to the sporting regulations, some of which could be introduced before 2021, when the major package of technical changes comes on stream.

"They're considering whether the points system should go all the way down to 20," said Force India boss Vijay Mallya.

"Every car scores a point if they finish the race. The bottom starts with one point and then goes up.

"Or whether 10 should be extended down to 15. All these discussions took place."

One of the motivations for the change would be to give drivers outside the top 10 an extra incentive to race hard, but the alternative view is that the current system offers a greater sense of reward.

"The point that was made is that there's a certain panache at being referred to as finishing in the top 10," Mallya told Autosport.

"That will get diluted if you start giving points down the line.

"When we do well all my friends send me messages saying, 'Congratulations, another top 10 finish.' Top 10 has a certain sense of achievement to it.

"The counter point that was made was that if every driver gets a point, all the way down to the bottom, then every car is going to be racing for a point.

"So at the end of the day nobody is going to stop pushing the limits just because they're outside the top 10 and there is no reward at the end.

"There was a suggestion to make it up to 15. There is obviously going to be more debate. This was based on research that was done."

Consideration is also being given to the return of points for fastest lap for the first time since 1959, or pole position being rewarded too - ideas Mallya says "are up in the air".

For the first 10 years of the world championship from 1950 points were only awarded only for the top five finishers, with an extra point for fastest lap.

That was extended to the top six from 1960 until 2002, with the fastest lap bonus dropped, and then to the top eight from 2003-'09. The current system, with 25 for a win and the top 10 all scoring, was introduced in 2010.

It’s definitely an interesting proposal. I found it odd only the top 10 got points when I first started watching, because I grew up on NASCAR, where even the 43rd car got points. Since I was raised that way, it makes the most sense to me. Say a driver finishes 11th, he should get more credit for that in the standings than if he finished 19th or 20th.

That said, you either keep it the way it is or you make it so everyone gets points. Giving points to the Top-15 seems stupid.

I hate the idea. Making it 10 places made sense. Having everyone earning points just devalues it all, I really hate the idea. I like a lot of what they've proposed since taking over but this is a huge thumbs down from me.

The only thing that might be a bit better if it were to happen is that one lucky 11th place in a sea of 20th places doesn't suddenly make you a better driver in the standings than a driver that had multiple 12th places as their highest marks.

But I also feel that if you look at the current standings, everyone but Sirotkin has gotten at least a point so reaching the top 10 isn't an impossible task even for the bottom feeders like Williams, Sauber, or Toro Rosso.

I honestly feel that the current system just works though, and whilst it might motivate some drivers/teams to push even when a 10th spot is impossible, the effect will be neglible whilst kinda debasing the accomplishment of scoring points. I feel top 10 is just right in this day and age of extreme reliability.

The evil side of me really does enjoy that every time Stroll or Sirotkin make a mistake the F1 production crew immediately have a camera on Robert Kubica watching in the garage.

And of course Stroll has been a complete dick as him spinning off and the subsequent red flag means that the final five minutes of qualifying now clash with the football.

They may as well go full whack. Hardly any racing during the race itself now. In fact, have qualifying as the main race.

Tactical Kimi!

I do like Hamilton saying his car is 'broken' as he keeps easily outbraking the midfield.
