This was an interesting draw if only because I'm gonna lull myself into a false sense of comfort picking some groups. B, C, G all look like slam dunk easy groups to pick where the only question is who finishes 1st and 2nd. Which of course means we're gonna wind up with like Morocco and Panama in the knockouts. The groups that seem harder right now to pick are A and H, in large part because I have zero faith in Russia or Poland to make it out of the group stages. But what's best about this draw is there's a ton of early intrigue with the first slate of matches--Egypt v Uruguay, Portugal v Spain, Peru v Denmark, Argentina v Iceland, Croatia v Nigeria, Germany v Mexico, Brazil v Switzerland, Colombia v Japan. It's just luck of the draw so many of the "likely" group top 2s meet right off the bat. Of course in Group D everyone is a likely top 2, hell of a group that is. On top of that Peru v Denmark feels so much like a loser is already eliminated match, assuming they don't play to a draw.

England manager Gareth Southgate has been told his job is safe even if his side lose every game at next year's World Cup in Russia.

Southgate oversaw a successful qualification campaign for the finals, where England will face Belgium, Tunisia and Panama in the group stage.

FA chief executive Martin Glenn says the manager will retain his position "for the next few tournaments".

"We have a long-term plan. You've seen some of the fruits of it," Glenn said.

Dear FA,

If we lose to Panama and Tunisia you need to fire Southgate. Out of a cannon.

Chillingly sincere,

Concerned citizen

I cannot wait for the World Cup.

It can all change in a split second. Waddle and Pearce all stick it away. Becks doesn't get sent off and Seaman ain't lobbed from a distance. England fucking Engerland. Gazza has a little cry but it is because he scored the winning goal against Argentina and finally giving it back to them for Las Malvinas and '86 you cheating fucking handball bastard. And he also captained England to a Euro's win against the Czech Republic after tapping in that Anderton cross. And then Pirlo skied it against Hart.

Swarms of locusts pose a threat to Russia’s World Cup because they could attack pitches, causing a “global scandal“, an agriculture ministry official said on Wednesday.

President Vladimir Putin is hoping to use the World Cup from 14 June to 15 July to showcase his country as a superpower at a time of frayed relations with the west over Syria and Ukraine.

Matches will be played in 12 stadiums in 11 cities. Pyotr Chekmarev, head of the agriculture ministry’s crop farming department, said the pitches could be targeted by locusts during the summer months.

“One way or another, we have learnt how to deal with locusts, but how do we not fall into a global scandal with locusts this year?” he said at an agricultural event in Moscow.

“The whole world is coming here. Football fields are green. Locusts love it where there is lots of green. How would they not come to the place where football is being played?“

Chekmarev said around a million hectares of land in southern Russia was infested with locusts, including around the World Cup host city of Volgograd.
