FIFA World Cup 2018

Recommended Posts

Come on lads, that is a great group for us on paper. Anyone know who we're lined up to face in the 2nd Round yet?

Was hoping Japan would end up in England's group there.

Oh well, commence the over-confidence.

Piss easy group

Russia given an easy group. Shocking.

They do have to face Salah, Suarez, and Cavani...

Had a quick look, we'd play Group H in the 2nd Round which is good. Then E or F in the Quarters so that should really be the minimum expectation even for us.

So we'll win the first two, expectation will build before a humbling 2-0 defeat to the Belgians, then a second round exit against Colombia when Tino Asprilla scores in extra time.

Nah, Panama are a tough team and Tunisia are well tasty. Should probably move the decimal point on ours.

And also El Neny :shifty:

I think I'll be rooting for France this time round. Giroud golden boot!

Whoever qualifies from England’s group will play either the winner or the runner-up from Poland’s Group H in the round of 16. Then England would play a team from either Group E or Group F. So there can be no England v Germany semi-final.

Russia vs. Saudi Arabia is a shite opening game

Australia into Group C with France, Peru and Demark - hope they can squeeze through that.

You and me both.

Is Peru worthy of an 11th Ranking?, Not fully into world football but it shocked me considering how they scraped past the Kiwis.

We'll either give the heavy hitters fits or we'll get pasted, No middle ground. Hiring a manager would be a good start too.

Pretty much - and they're the lowest ranked nation not just in their group but in the entire World Cup to boot, and have only beaten Hungary, South Korea and New Zealand in this year.

As I said before, I expect any well organised team in the competition to get some sort of result against the England side we've seen over the last few years. "There are no easy games" is a World Cup cliché that gets trotted out every tournament, but it's true for England right now.

Getting eliminated by Roberto Martinez would certainly be something.

Don't the rankings get determined more by competitive games though? Of which Russia have barely played any due to not being in World Cup qualifying. They were on about how Poland gamed the system to purposely be seeded by only arranging one friendly in the last year.

Also, heads up @MDK because I'm about to quote myself quoting myself.

About 3:20pm apparently.

Cos I'm boring, I've just mocked up a prediction for the draw that I'm sure will be totally wrong in every way:

Got Russia/Uruguay right. Plus Argentina/Nigeria and France/Denmark but I think that was it

So the Woman's World Cup starts tomorrow, with hosts Canada facing China. Anyone else going to be watching?

I'm supporting Sweden personally, them and Canada.

We've got a month until the World Cup! So exciting!

Anyway for some reason the BBC suddenly posted news about Japan's squad because Shunsuke Nakamura (the ex-Celtic player) has been recalled.
However the best news is that Kawaguchi is back in the squad as third choice goalie! He's a total legend. A chirpy little Japanese shot stopping legend:

My local team is Nagoya Grampus and we've got two players in the squad but one is Tulio who hasn't had the best couple of years.

Is Jesus (Kennedy) in the Australian squad? He's Nagoya's big lanky striker who looks useless for 89 minutes and then bundles in a header in the last minute pretty much every game.

Anyway, Japan are annoying me because their style at ANY kind of football is to try to dribble the ball into the net (a bit like Arsenal but less successful) instead of one person just deciding to let rip from around the box. If they actually shot from 16-25 yards from time to time they'd actually be pretty decent.

We have an England thread, but not a general one, so here it is.

Norn Iron are 1-0 down against Russia with around 25mins to play.

Wales vs. Belgium is on Sky Sports later, and Holland-Turkey can be watched on ESPN.

Fully expecting a comfortable Belgium win this evening. Can't see Wales handling them.

Scotland play Serbia, and Rep Ire vs. Kazakhstan is currently goal-less.

It may seem early but, bo-lieve it or not, the qualifying campaigns for certain AFC teams begin today. I'd completely forgotten about it, until I read this article on the BBC, explaining how a 'living God' was cheering on Bhutan in their opening game.

The 12 lowest ranked sides contest a two legged play off to see who gets into Round 2.

Some of the first leg games have already finished, including a shock win for Bhutan (the only team in the current FIFA World rankings to have zero points):

      Timor-Leste 4 - 1 Mongolia
      Cambodia 3 - 0 Macau
      Sri Lanka 0 - 1 Bhutan

The games still to play/finish are:

      India - Nepal
      Yemen - Pakistan
      Chinese Taipei - Brunei Draussalam

The second legs are due to be played on Tuesday next week.

As for the other qualifying zones, CONCACAF begin later this month (23rd), and the CAF and CONMEBOL begin in October. UEFA are yet to reveal the date of their start. OFC are using the OFC Nations Cup next year as their qualification process.

EDIT: We should so adopt a team in each zone as EWB's underdog team!
