EWB's Album of the Year 2017: Voting Thread

Roster Depth Sicko No. 2

Recommended Posts

Yes, great idea, let's do a voting thing. I don't know who normally does this but we don't have a thread yet so I'm doing one because MORE MUSIC FORUM DISCUSSION DAMN IT.

Simple enough; pick let's say up to 15 to copy the TV thread one (less than 15 is totally acceptable), 15 points for first, 14 for second and so on and so forth. I'll leave the poll open until the clock officially strikes 00:00 GMT January 1st, 2018 so you have just over two weeks. Edit it as much as you like up to that point, but I will tally the votes once I get up that morning and that will be it.

Any non-compilation album with a 2017 release is eligible. I'm going by UK/US release dates but I can't honestly think of an example where an album has come out in 2016 somewhere else and then 2017 here so I don't imagine it'll be relevant.

I'll post my list in the morning, but yeah, spread the love and vote for your favourite bands!

In the most 2017 thing ever, my two favourite albums this year were made by men who turned out to be vile sexual predators, so that's a shame. I've not included them because fuck those guys, they don't deserve the nod. This year has been a fucking excellent year for music though, kinda hard to get it down to 15. Not that that matters, I'm sure, like, maybe 2 of these might make it onto the list?

  1. Mount Eerie - "A Crow Looked At Me"
  2. Pile - "A Hairshirt of Purpose"
  3. Sorority Noise - "You're Not As _____ As You Think"
  4. Converge - "The Dusk In Us"
  5. Manchester Orchestra - "A Black Mile to the Surface"
  6. Ted Leo - "The Hanged Man"
  7. Kendrick Lamar - "DAMN."
  8. The Menzingers - "After the Party"
  9. LCD Soundsystem - "American Dream"
  10. the Mountain Goats - "Goths"
  11. Jay-Z - "4:44"
  12. Broken Social Scene - "Hug of Thunder"
  13. Conor Oberst - "Salutations"
  14. Jamie Lenman - "Devolver"
  15. Tyler, The Creator - "Scum Fuck Flower Boy"

Edit: Fuck! In the first of many edits, I totally forgot Ted Leo released an album this year. Sorry Bjork, you're getting bumped. If you're reading this you're still my queen and I love you but Ted Leo was on fucking form this year.

Debated my list whilst hungover this morning. I've listened to way less new music than I thought, turns out half the albums I thought I'd vote for were in the last few months of 2016. After the top five, this got really difficult to even think up a remaining 10 that I've listened to and I'll probably change it a dozen times as I remember other things. Very much a provisional list for now.

1. Roam - Great Heights and Nosedives
2. One OK Rock - Ambitions
3. Royal Blood - How Did We Get So Dark?
4. Hunter & The Bear - Paper Heart
5. Neck Deep - The Peace and The Panic
6. Lower Than Atlantis - Safe In Sound
7. All Time Low - Last Young Renegade
8. Nothing But Thieves - Broken Machine
9. Astroid Boys - Broke
10. Stormzy - Gang Signs & Prayer
11. Paramore - After Laughter
12. Felix Hagan & The Family - Attention Seeker
13. Foo Fighters - Concrete and Gold
14. Kasabian - For Crying Out Loud
15. As It Is - okay.

The fuck I did. Ed Sheeran can eat my poo.

Also I'm considering bumping Mount Eerie down a couple places. I don't think it was my out and out favourite but fuck me that album was important. It was written and recorded in the month following the death of Phil Elverum's wife and it's absolutely the most honest and brutal account of loss ever made. But ugh, Pile was just soooooooooo good this year.

The 15pts to 1pt system is flawed. You should count something like 1015pts to 1001pt (1-15), because it's a bigger deal if a single album is on multiple lists than if one person ranks an album high. Make the internal ranking work more like a tie-breaker.

I'll come up with some sort of a list later (it's going to be mostly metal/rock).

I'm confused how giving everything an extra 1000 points per vote is going to make a difference :P

Because an album can now be on a lot of lists and still get a sorry total score compared to a single high entry.

For example Album A can get 1pt+2pts+6pts+3pts=12pts. Now that's four lists so clearly a ton of peeps love it, yet the total score is the same as a single entry that ranks 4th on someone's list (12pts). How is a single 4th place worth the same as twelve 15th place votes?

I'll do top ten now and hopefully finish the list soon. Under the title there's a link to a music video from each album. I wanted to put them under spoilers, but this board just hates me so whatever.

1. Iced Earth - Incorruptible
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUMDcVMiduY

2. Axxis - Retrolution
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yk0Wf13A3Sc

3. Ayreon - The Source
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obySu2DExWY

4. Skyclad - Forward into the Past
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YjaMhB857I

5. Rage - Seasons of the Black
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_OB6hO9ONE

6. Blaze Bayley - Endure and Survive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iep8-Guxmm0

7. Pink Cream 69 - Headstrong
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EVyfvf-tHD4

8. Beast in Black - Berserker
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2N4tXf3Ensw

9. Savage Messiah - Hands of Fate

I lied. I only did nine.

And there are just as many films as there are albums, I don't see what difference it makes.

Besides with the lack of voting it won't make a difference since it's literally just the bands getting multiple votes that are getting anywhere near the top.

Nah. Now there's going to be a bunch of albums with 15pts near the top.

Only 9 albums have multiple votes, and only one of those has more than two. At the moment it's a completely moot point since there aren't enough votes for it to make any significant difference.

Well, maybe those nine should be the top 9?

Anyway, it's your thread, so do as you wish. Just thought it'd be a better representative of users here to make multiple mentions mean more than internal ranking by each user.

I'll do the last six votes another day. The hockey WJC just started.

Well, I'll finish my list now.

10. Jag Panzer - The Deviant Chord
11. L.A. Guns - The Missing Peace
12. Sorcerer - The Crowning of the Fire King
13. Overkill - The Grinding Wheel
14. Cellador - Off the Grid
15. Sanctuary - Inception
16. Lich King - Omniclasm
17. Brother Firetribe - Sunbound
18. Lonewolf - Raised on Metal

...and ran a little long. Kind of tough because I don't love any of these that much, but also can't really exclude any for being worse. But I guess the cut off ends up being Sanctuary and Lich King misses the bubble.
