UEFA Nations League 2018/19

I actually like the idea of the tournament (including Division D sides getting a spot at the Euros). Just a shame its quite complex to explain.

We get less meaningless friendlies, a chance to see England face top sides more often, and a chance for sides at all levels to play a decent amount of competitive games against sides of a similar ilk.

I will be rooting for the Faroes!

Giving this a bump as the first games are less than 2 months away. I think the groups look a lot more interesting after how the World Cup went - us, Spain and Croatia? Yikes!

Basically, UEFA are splitting the 55 European nations into 4 separate divisions (based on rankings), then into 3 or 4 groups. Each group will contain 3 or 4 teams and will play each other home and away, then the winners of all the groups go into a semi-final for a chance to play in the UEFA Nations League final (although this only applies to Block A).

All teams finishing bottom of their groups will be relegated and all teams finishing top will be promoted to the next block.

I think the idea of it was to give teams such as Faroe Islands, Gibralter etc more competitive games against teams of similar ability whilst doing away with "pointless" friendlies at the same time. It's pretty much just a mini not-as-important European Championship.

It also allows a handful of spots in the Euros to be dished out to lower ranked sides too.

@Lineker - Are you / The Beeb aware that the Nations League fixtures don't appear on the standard Scores & Fixtures page? The friendlies do, but these are absent. The fixtures are on the site, but you have to go to the England page and specifically look up England's fixtures.

Denmark have named a second-string squad including futsal players for this week’s friendly against Slovakia and Nations League match against Wales after contract negotiations with first-team regulars reached deadlock.

If the Danish Football Association (DBU) had failed to name a squad, the team, who are ninth in the world rankings and reached the last 16 stage of this summer’s World Cup, could have been thrown out of the 2020 European Championship.

Danish newspaper Ekstra Bladet reported that the squad includes players from the national futsal team, a five-a-side game played mainly indoors on small hard courts. Coach Aage Hareide will not be in charge of the team for the upcoming games as the DBU does not want him to manage a side he did not pick himself.

The dispute is chiefly over the rights of players, including Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen, to make individual sponsorship agreements with companies competing with national team sponsors. The players’ travelling conditions are also an issue.

On Tuesday, the players’ union made a second offer to extend their existing contracts, which would have postponed further negotiations until after the two games.

The DBU last year had to cancel a World Cup qualifying match for the women’s national team against Sweden, also due to a contract dispute.
