You're free to explore, find and complete missions at your own leisure once you're out of the tutorial stage. You'll know when that is. As soon as the rest of the map opens up, head straight to Rae-Rae's Pumpkin Farm in John's region. It isn't too far away from where you begin the game.

You will either come across them at set locations, or some hostages that you free while exploring will bring up the option to be hired after liberating. You can store up to 3 on speed dial to call upon at any one time, each usually has a particular trait (i.e. sniper, solider, archer). There are 9 (I think) 'specialists' that you unlock by doing missions too, and they're much better than the regular guns for hire.

Sorry I meant how do I call them in.

In the main menu (Map, Journal etc.), there should be a 'Roster' option. From there, select who you want, assign them to a slot, and they should just appear when you go back into the game.

Ok I bought it. Don't have time to play tonight but for those that have how soon do I get the dog? That's literally all I care about right now

Maybe you should just buy Nintendogs. Or a real dog.

I felt pretty bad ass just now. 2 guys were holding someone hostage and I snuck up and bopped one in the back of the head with my shovel and shot the other before he could turn around. I am pretty amazing :P

Now I hired some guy named Dan! Dan and I are going to fuck these guys up! :w00t:

I almost feel lied to by people who told me that the opening of the game wasn't intense or memorable. That was something else.

Question: Do Guns for Hire permanently die?

I am not sure. I know Dan got shot and was screaming he was bleeding out but I got to him and revived him so he was ok. Maybe he would have died if I had not done that but who knows?

The specialists will be out of action for a set amount of time if you don't revive them when downed. When Nick Rye went down yesterday, he was unavailable for 10mins. Not sure if that's the same for Boomer, but I know there are perks tied to each one that reduces the cooldown. Haven't unlocked any of those yet though as I'm too concerned about unlocking things for myself. -_-

Tried a community made outpost last night in the Arcade. Very fun even if I did get my arse kicked. It did look tailor made for two people in co op as opposed to just one, mind. Will hopefully get to give co op a try later.

Also, I had to Google it to double check, but when there's a search party out for you, the best thing to do is to let them capture you as it advances the story. Apparently you can kill everyone in a search party but new one will spawn soon after until they get you.

I haven't had any Guns Fore Hire outright die but I presume they're the same as Specialists in that if they do, they're unavailable for 20 minutes (there are perks to shorten the waiting time too IIRC).

Also a tip I've just figured out after liberating John's region: save your side missions until you finish the main story in each region. You get an additional Liberation Bonus of $400 per mission. I'm now going through and tying up all the loose ends in the region before moving onto Faith, and my cash has shot up to like $20K purely from getting $1K+ per side mission as a result.

And something to be aware of during the "Cow Punch" side mission (minor spoilers):

Spoiler

Don't have your Guns For Hire or Specialists with you. You have to punch or throw rocks at the cows to herd them into the pen, which turns them aggressive, which results in your party treating them as hostiles. I discovered this when Nick decided that the most effective way to herd cattle was to drop a bomb on them.

Dying to get into this, pre ordered it and haven't had a chance to start yet. How are your first impressions? Better gameplay than 4? Is the map comparable in size or what? I've heard conflicting reports but I think a lot is down to the controversy rather than actual quality.

The map does seem bigger. Holland Valley is where I've started and it doesn't feel like I've completely explored all of that yet. Not to mention far more points of interest like buildings/shacks with loot in.

I recommend doing the Prepper Stash 'puzzles' as they become available to you. Always gives a good payout and a few perk points. Came off the game just now with 20 stored up as I'm not sure what to unlock next.

@Nerf, question...

Once I find a map and it says "5 new locations discovered", am I free to sell that map on without losing the locations? I would assume so but I've kept them just in case.

Also, just decided I hate the flying and shooting moving targets at the same time. Fuck. Managed to do the mission I was on in the end. The beauty is, I suppose, that you don't need to do every mission to accumulate the liberation points, so that's handy as I'm shit on the plane.

Have they removed the auto drive thing?
