October 16th, 2004 - Rise of the Independents: Culmination

We come on the air as CM Punk makes his way to the ring, but not yet dressed in ring gear, apparently he has something on his mind.

Punk: “Everybody’s heard the rumors concerning Scoot Andrews (boos from the crowd) and his signing with WWE. Now I’m not gonna come out here and rip him and his decision to go to WWE, it’s a dream a lot guys have in this business and he has to make a living for him and his family. But when the boys signed on for this tournament, that meant that they were considered one of the best on the independent scene. Do you have any idea what that means? How many THOUSANDS of wrestlers are on the indy scene who didn’t get a chance to be in this prestigious tournament and YOU Scoot Andrews were one of the ones deemed good enough to be in it. So you go to WWE, and don’t come crying back when they book you as a servant to John Bradshaw Layfield or something, you have been replaced my friend! Now without further ado, Chris Hero, please come to the ring.”

“Kryptonite” hits and Chris Hero makes his way through the curtain. He gets in the ring and shakes hands with CM Punk.

Punk: “Chris Hero, you were scheduled to face Scoot Andrews in the opening contest of tonight’s show. One part of that won’t change, you better be ready to wrestle right NOW. And your opponent and the man who will take Scoot Andrews’ place in this tournament and make it his own is a former IWA World heavyweight champion as well the CURRENT NWA TNA X Division champion, ladies and gentlemen, PETEY WILLIAMS!”

“One Step Closer” by Linkin Park plays and Petey Williams makes his way out to a decent ovation. Once people see he doesn’t have his pro-Canada garb on, they cheer him more. He gets into the ring and shakes hands with CM Punk and his opponent Chris Hero, this should be an awesome match up!

Chris Hero (0-1) vs. Petey Williams (adopting Scoot Andrews’ record of 0-1)

They circle each other as the enthusiastic crowd of about 500 rally the two into battle. Hero starts out wrestling circles around Petey before doing a series of unique stretches, wearing down different parts of Petey’s anatomy. Petey hits an inverted atomic drop and a climbing enziguri to turn the tide. Hero rolls out holding his head and Petey comes over the top with a pescado! He tries to whip Hero to the rail but Hero reverses and Petey goes back first into the rail! Hero charges but gets a boot in the head and Petey then hits an interesting neckbreaker, grabbing Hero’s head and falling FORWARD while finishing the neckbreaker and Hero’s head makes a sickening sound on the arena floor! Petey tosses Hero back into the ring and hits a trifecta of kneedrops for a 2 count. A snapmare and a dropkick to the back of the head gets another 2 for Petey. Petey switches up and goes for a sharpshooter to wear Hero down more but as he grapevines the legs, Hero sits up with a vicious headbutt that rocks both men! Hero comes back with some forearms and whips Petey to the ropes and goes for a tilt-a-whirl move of some sort but Petey lands on his feet and Russian legsweeps Hero, the back of his head again smacking the mat. Another 2 count follows. Petey then works on Hero with a Camel clutch with repeated shots to Hero’s head. Hero is able to make it first to his knees and then lifts Petey on his shoulders. He grabs Petey and sits out, driving Petey down with a brutal Rubix Cube but he’s too tired to cover! The ref counts to 6 and both men are up, Petey with the advantage and he jumps at Hero with a crossbody attempt but Hero catches him and hits the Hero Sandwich II and then a DDT! He is working over Petey’s neck, setting up for the Hero’s Welcome or the Hangman’s Clutch for sure! He actually goes for the Hangman’s clutch but Petey quickly reaches the ropes. Hero pulls him back but Petey kicks him off, tries a rana but Hero catches him and powerbombs him into the corner! He puts Petey up top and goes for maybe a super Tiger Driver but Petey shoves him off and hits a flying legdrop to the back of the head, cover, 1-2-kickout. Hero is in trouble though! Petey calls for the end and runs at Hero and tries for the Canadian Destroyer flipping piledriver but Hero catches Petey by the legs and slams him down with a Concrete Crash and then lifts him right up into a Hero’s Welcome! He folds Petey right up into a pin and gets the 3! Great debut match for Petey Williams but Chris Hero gets the duke!

WINNER---Chris Hero

****

The two come face to face after the match, Hero holding the back of his head, Petey holding his neck, and they shake hands! Good show of respect and a fantastic debut match for Petey Williams, he’ll replace Scoot Andrews just fine!

Up next we’ll see an interesting match. Frankie Kazarian, coming off a convincing win over Spanky, takes on Super Dragon who had that incredible 30 minute time limit draw with Paul London. Let’s see who can take their momentum and run with it.

Super Dragon (0-0-1) vs. Frankie Kazarian (1-0)

This match is very fast paced right from the beginning as Dragon stuns Frankie with headscissors and ranas before pummeling him in the corner with forearms and chops. Frankie turns the tide with a springboard back elbow off the second rope. He then slingshots in from the apron with a DDT on Dragon for a 2 count. A German suplex gets another 2. Frankie decides to go up top and gets crotched and Frankensteinered! Dragon then Curb Stomps Frankie, what a brutal move that is! A 2 count follows. Dragon goes to the apron and waits for Frankie to get up and goes for the UFO, the springboard spin heel kick but Frankie moves, goes for his Wave of the Future but Dragon elbows out, tries for the Psycho Driver but Frankie backflips out of that, ducks a high kick by Dragon and hits the Back to the Future bridging Electric Chair suplex and gets a 2 and ¾! He calls for the end and locks in his TazMission but Dragon grabs the ropes. Frankie lets go and tries for another German but Dragon blocks, go behind and hits 2 rolling Germans of his own. He holds on and goes for a Dragon suplex but Frankie with a go behind of his own and locks in the TazMission again! He wraps a leg around Dragon and brings him down! This could be it! The ref checks Dragon’s arm once, it drops. Second time, it drops again! He tries the third time but Dragon’s arm stays up! He uses the energy from the crowd to get to his feet and he runs and ducks down, propelling Frankie face-first into the turnbuckle! He hooks in a pumphandle, going for the Supernatural Driver but Frankie escapes it and hits the Wave of the Future out of nowhere! He turns Dragon over, One, two, three! What a win for Frankie Kazarian!

WINNER---Frankie Kazarian

Backstage, Christopher Daniels has words for his opponent tonight, CM Punk.

Daniels: ”CM Punk, tonight, you and I write one more chapter in our long rivalry. We’ve been everywhere, IWC, IWA Mid South. But the one place that stands out in my mind the most Punk, is Ring of Honor. You sent me packing from Ring of Honor after the Pepsi Plunge through the table and I will never forget that. Tonight, you pay for the sins you have committed against me CM Punk. And all you can do is say your prayers.”

Speaking of prayers, “Prayer” by Disturbed hits as The Messiah makes his way to the ring after DEFEATING Low Ki at the last show albeit with the help of Christopher Daniels. You gotta wonder if Daniels will stick his nose in this match also as him and the Messiah seem to have some sort of unholy alliance between them. Doug Williams, who Daniels beat at the last show, makes his way out, this should be an interesting contrast in styles.

Doug Williams (0-1) vs. The Messiah (1-0)

Starting out, Messiah tries to keep pace with Williams but Williams is just too much with that European style and he takes control in the early goings. Messiah is able to hit a nice X Factor to turn the tide. He comes off the top with a flying bodypress for a 2. Williams is able to regain momentum with the Revolution DDT. He goes up top and goes for the flying kneedrop but Messiah moves and Doug injures his knee! Messiah, like a shark on blood, is right on that leg, wearing it out. He slaps on a single leg crab but Doug reaches the bottom rope. Messiah scoop slams Doug and then lays the leg out and then hits a Lionsault onto the leg! Doug yells in pain as Messiah locks in an Indian Deathlock. Doug again reaches the ropes. Messiah calls for the end and goes for the Godsmack but Doug escapes and pushes Messiah to the corner and rolls back with the CHAOS THEORY! But he hurt his leg and he can’t make the cover! He finally does but by this time Messiah is able to kick out at 2! Doug gets up and whips Messiah to the corner and hits a charging knee and then a high knee off the ropes. He climbs up top and is gonna go for the kneedrop but he thinks better of it and hits a flying elbowdrop instead! One, two, no! Messiah kicks out! Doug calls for the end and goes for the Chaos Theory again but as he pushes Messiah into the corner, Christopher Daniels comes out nowhere and blasts Doug with a forearm! Doug is stunned and Messiah takes the advantage to lift him and plant him down with the Fall From Grace! He covers, no not this way! One, two, three! Messiah steals one!

WINNER---The Messiah

***

This alliance of Christopher Daniels and The Messiah may steal this entire tournament, they must be stopped!

Right onto our next match which will no doubt be FAIR for a change as Sonjay Dutt does battle with the “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson.

Sonjay Dutt (0-1) vs. Bryan Danielson (1-0)

Sonjay frustrates Danielson in the early part of the match but Danielson takes control and lights Sonjay up with several chops. He starts working over Sonjay’s back with a backbreaker. He then stretches Sonjay over his shoulder in a Canadian backbreaker. A back suplex gets 2. Danielson whips Sonjay and goes for a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker but Sonjay keeps spinning and hits a swinging DDT out of it! Sonjay Star Press gets a 2. He scoop slams Danielson and then hits his double jump elbowdrop off the top for 2 and a half! Sonjay slams him down and goes up top for the Hindu Press but Danielson crotches him and takes him off the top with a back superplex! Danielson goes to lock on the Cattle Mutilation but Sonjay quickly squirms to the ropes. Danielson drags him up and hits his snap DDT then climbs up top. He comes off for a diving headbutt but Sonjay moves! A spinning heel kick takes Danielson down. Sonjay now with a kick to the gut, off the ropes with a boot to the head, a chinbreaker over his knee and then a leaping neckbreaker, that’s the Calcut Cut! Cover, one, two, thr..no! Danielson kicks out at 2 and a half. Sonjay picks Danielson up and hitsh is running muscle buster, the Indian Summer! He calls for the end and pulls Danielson over to a corner. He goes up top for his Hindu Press and jumps for it, sees Danielson move in mid-air and lands on his feet, somersaulting through, charges at Danielson and goes for a big boot but Danielson dodges him and cradles the leg and then DRIVES Sonjay down head first with a leg-clutch backdrop driver, dangerooouuuusss! He then picks Sonjay up and grabs him in position for a Veg-o-matic or something but bends Sonjay into a CRAB! Oh my God, the body isn’t meant to bend like that and Sonjay agrees it seems as he TAPS immediately! Danielson picks up a big win!

WINNER---Bryan Danielson

***

Sonjay can barely stand as he holds his back but he gets up and Danielson offers his hand, which Sonjay accepts in a great show of sportsmanship! Danielson climbs to 2-0 with that win!

Up next we have “Classic” Colt Cabana taking on Low Ki, this should be a great match with the powerhouse Cabana trying to stave off the martial arts abilities of Ki.

Low Ki (0-1) vs. Colt Cabana (1-0)

They circle each other, Low Ki trying to attack quickly, Cabana being warily defensive. Low Ki makes a mistake early and Colt takes control, working over Low Ki’s neck. He has Ki down and places a foot at either side of Ki’s head and then twists his hips, jarring the neck of Low Ki! A double knees to the side of the head and a swinging neckbreaker further the pain in Ki’s neck. Cotl whips Ki to the corner and goes for the double knees but Ki moves. He hits some stiff chops and then backs up, goes for the Tidal Krush but Cabana moves, Ki lands on the second rope but Cabana gets under Ki and takes him out of the corner with a big sitout powerbomb. Cabana then hits a big moonsault from the top for 2. He goes back to work on the neck with a chinlock. The fans get behind Ki and rally him, he gets up and hits a trifecta of elbows to Colt’s ribs and tries to run to the ropes but Colt pounds on Ki’s neck once again. Colt then runs off the ropes but he is met by a Koppo kick on the return! Colt is on his knees and Ki sets up for his Krush Kombo, he hits the 2 kicks to Colt’s barrel chest but Colt ducks the third and scoops him up like for a Kryptonite Krunch but drops Ki neck-first on his knee! That gets a long 2 count for Colt. Ki with a short comeback, goes for a springboard kick off the second rope, the Tidal Wave, but Colt catches him in a bearhug and then swings him over with a big DDT! More damage to the neck! That gets another 2 count. Colt calls for the end and goes for his Colt 45 but Ki headbutts him to escape and he dropkicks the knee of Colt. He then grabs Colt’s head and hits some brutal Kawada kicks to the face! He whips him to the corner and this time connects with the Tidal Krush and then a Power Drive elbow and he gets 2. He hits some nasty Mongolian chops to the back of Colt’s neck and then a huge chop to the chest. Colt seems to get mad and hits a flurry of punches and goes for a lariat but Ki ducks and hits a big Yakuza kick! He goes for the Ki Krusher, Colt escapes and sets Ki up for the Colt 45 again but as Ki is up for the move, he maneuvers himself into a Dragon Clutch on Cabana! Cabana fights it but is forced down to his knees! He is able to make his way back to a standing position and he snapmares Ki over to break the hold! He then runs off the ropes and goes for a quebrada press but he misses and Ki goes right back to the Dragon Clutch, this time with Colt on his stomach, nowhere to go! Colt holds on for about 10 seconds but then taps! Low Ki gets his first win of the tournament!

WINNER--- Low Ki

We go backstage to Michael Shane, who has some comments about tonight’s upcoming match against his arch-rival Paul London.

Shane: “Paul London, do you have any idea how long it’s been since our legendary ladder street fight in Ring of Honor? I am very proud of that match as I’m sure you are as well. Except one thing. You won that match Paul. That one fact has eaten me alive since the second it happened because I know, deep down in my heart I know, and I’m sure deep down in your heart you know too, that I should have won that match. I should have gone on to be a star in Ring of Honor. But that’s only one piece of the pie Paul. I went on to be a star for NWA TNA, the X Division champion of the world to be exact. And what did you do? You floundered for an entire year in obscurity, also known as the WWE, and you did nothing. So now you’re back in the Indies looking to re-establish yourself as the Almighty “Death-Defying” Paul London. Well Paul, tonight I’m gonna make sure that you won’t defy death anymore because I’m serving it to you on a silver platter. The fans tell you Paul, “please don’t die.” Tonight, I shatter their prayers, along with your soul.”

Wow, an intense promo by Michael Shane, will he make good on his promise in his match tonight against his nemesis Paul London? We’ll find out but before we do, we have Spanky vs. Chris Sabin!

Spanky (0-1) vs. Chris Sabin (1-0)

This match is just go, go, go from the beginning. Sabin hits a big climbing enziguri to knock Spanky to the floor and then he hits a huge no hands Spaceman plancha to the floor! Back in he hits the Over Easy for a 2. He goes for a springboard dropkick but Spanky swats him aside and hits a leg lariat. He whips Sabin to the corner, runs and backflips off him (Dr. Smooth’s Secret Recipe) and then tries to whip Sabin to the opposite corner, Sabin reverses, Spanky tips up in the corner and spins around into a rana and takes Sabin over and Sabin rolls to the floor now! Spanky runs and hits a big somersault plancha, the Whirling Twirlixer! Back in now and Spanky comes off the top with a back elbow for a 2 and a half. A sitout gourdbuster gets another 2. He brings Sabin to the corner and goes for a Tornado Pedigree but Sabin blocks it so Spanky kicks him and hits the Doctor Teeth, a ¾ chancery turned into a facebuster on the knee! He then goes for Sliced Bread #2 but Sabin pushes him off behind him, boot to the gut, tries for the Future Shock but Spanky escapes that, hits a couple forearms and goes for a crossbody but Sabin catches him and hits the Sabinalizer. That was shades of Hero and Williams earlier! Sabin gets a 2 on that. Sabin now goes up top but he gets crotched by Spanky. Spanky goes for a super rana but Sabin holds on and Spanky crashes to the mat. Sabin stands up and connects with a big crossbody off the top, 1…2…no! Spanky kicks out. Sabin then again goes the Cradle Shock and spins Spanky over for it but Spanky flips and lands on his feet, grabs the ¾ chancery and hits the Sliced Bread #2! Sabin lands right on his head on the move and Spanky covers, one…two…three! Spanky scores the win!

WINNER---Spanky

The two get up and shake hands after.

It’s time for the rematch everybody’s been waiting for as 2 of the prize students from the Texas Wrestling Academy wage war once again. Michael Shane. Paul London. Let’s get to it!

Michael Shane (0-1) vs. Paul London (0-0-1)

Rudy Boy Gonzalez leads Paul to the ring in a show of moral support, he was the one who oversaw Paul’s training and the early goings of his career so it must mean a lot to Paul to have him present! They come face to face in the middle of the ring, staring into each other’s eyes. Shane finally breaks the stand-still with a blistering slap to London’s face. London just looks in Shane’s eyes before hitting a series of stiff forearms to Shane’s face! He whips Shane to the ropes and hits a big diving forearm, followed by a spin heel kick and finally a Dropsault and Shane gets frustrated and leaves the ring. London makes it look like he’s going to dive out on Shane but puts on the brakes as Shane literally dives out of the way to avoid him. The fans laugh at Shane and he gets pissed off and charges into the ring but he gets taken down by a drop toehold and London paintbrushes the back of Shane’s head Scott Hall style. Shane gets up uber-pissed now and London armdrags him and locks on an armbar. Shane fights his way up and pulls London down by the hair and stomps away. He lifts London up hits a vicious backbreaker. Shane hits a nice back suplex and then tosses London to the floor. Shane then hits a somersault plancha over the ropes to the floor! He whips London into the rail and then grabs a chair. The ref warns him but Shane hits London over the back anyways. The ref tries to take the chair away from Shane and they get in a tug of war over it. Shane wins out and raises the chair to hit London again but gets the chair superkicked into his face! London with a desperation move and Michael Shane is BUSTED OPEN!! London then suplexes Shane on the floor. He goes inside the ring to break the count and sees Shane get up so he runs and springs off the adjacent middle rope and moonsaults over the ropes onto Shane, oh my God what a move! The fans chant “Holy Shit” at that as London gets up and tosses Shane back in the ring and follows. A slingshot legdrop gets a 2 count. He goes up top possibly for a London Star Press but Shane crotches him! Shane then pulls London out so only his feet are hanging on the turnbuckle and then SPIKES him down with a DDT! Shane then goes outside and reaches under the ring and pulls out a 20 FOOT LADDER! The fans erupt at this and start chanting “Please Don’t Die!” as the ref just throws his arms up in the air, I don’t think he cares anymore!

Shane puts the ladder in the ring and props it up against the corner, like in their legendary ROH match. He goes over to London who is just starting to get up. He tries to whip London into but London reverses and Shane baseball slides to put on the brakes, London charges, Shane ducks and elevates London but London lands on his feet on the ladder and jumps back with a crossbody! Another Dropsault connects! He then hits the Waffle Face! He goes up top and goes for the London Star but Shane gets the knees up into the midsection! He waits for London to stand and then blasts him with Sweet Shane Music! Shane now climbs up top and comes off with the Picture Perfect Elbow, right to the chest, that’s gotta be it! One…two…thr..no!! London kicks out and the fans erupt! They start chanting “London! London!” to get Paul back into the match. Shane pushes Paul into the corner and climbs up. He starts punching Paul’s head, some of the crowd count along but most are booing. London stops him at 7 and cradles Shane’s head and hits him with a neck cradle powerbomb, DANGEROOOUUUSSS!! They are both down and the ref starts counting. They get up and start trading shots with each other, Shane gets the advantage and has London staggered, the ladder right behind him. Shane backs up and charges but London ducks down and back body drops him on the ladder! He then hits his Legsweep DDT, that should be it! London is about to climb to the top rope but he stops and looks at the ladder across the ring. He goes over and grabs it and sets it up! He then climbs up as the ref holds it steady, he’s about 10 feet up! He looks around and hits the London Star Press off the ladder!! The fans go wild as he covers, 1-2-3!

WINNER--- Paul London

**** ½

London gets to his feet as the fans are chanting “London, London.” He salutes them and makes his way to the back. Shane then gets up finally and the fans are chanting “Michael Shane.” He looks around and stops for a second…and then flips everybody off! The chants and cheers soon turn to jeers and he leaves the ring. What a great match, definitely up to par with their legendary match in ROH.

And now we have the match everybody’s been waiting for. CM Punk vs. the “Fallen Angel” Christopher Daniels. These two have such an extensive past. From their matches in IWC, their second round match in the 2002 Ted Petty Invitational and of course the Second City Saints vs. Prophecy feud in Ring of Honor that climaxed when Punk and his Saints Pepsi Plunged Daniels through a table, ending his ROH career. This match will be intense, that’s for sure. But CM Punk has to be wary of Daniels’ new partner The Messiah. Daniels makes his way out first, indeed accompanied by the Messiah. He gets in the ring and waits for Punk.

CM Punk (1-0) vs. Christopher Daniels (1-0)

Punk can’t even fully get into the ring before Daniels attacks. Daniels pounds on Punk’s back. He whips him to the ropes and hits a leg lariat. He lifts Punk in a suplex and keeps him vertical as the fans count along all the way to 20 and Daniels drops him down, great strength! A back suplex and a slingshot legdrop in from the apron gets a quick 2. A Flatliner hits and Daniels holds on and uses his leg to apply a Crossface on Punk but Punk gets his foot on the rope. Daniels whips Punk to the corner and charges in but Punk moves and beats him down in the corner. He then hits some nasty boot scrapes and then a running one! He hits a scoop slam and then a split-legged moonsault for a quick 2 of his own. He twists Daniels around for a neckbreaker and then drops him down neck first on his knee and then runs off the ropes, goes for a shining wizard but Daniels ducks and hits a Blue Thunder Driver for 2! He picks Punk up and slams him down with a uranage slam. He then goes to the corner and hits the Best Moonsault Ever, cover, one…two..thr..no! Punk gets the shoulder up. Daniels calls for then end and tries for Angel’s Wings but he gets backdropped by Punk. Punk runs to the ropes and this time connects with the Shining Wizard! He covers, one, two, no! The Messiah pulled the ref out of the ring! The ref is having words with Messiah and Punk is distracted long enough for Daniels to low blow him from behind and he hits the Angel’s Wings! He covers as the Messiah gets the ref to look and the ref dives in to make the count, no not this way! One…two…no! Punk kicks out of Angel’s Wings! Daniels can’t believe it! He lifts Punk up and goes for Last Rites but Punk twists around, grabs the arm and hits his hammerlock STO! He hits Welcome to Chicago Motherfucker and that gets a CLOSE 2. He pulls off his elbow pad and says “That’s it!” He bounces off the ropes and goes for a lariat but Daniels catches the arm and maneuvers Punk around into Last Rites, it’s over! Daniels is so quick! But he’s too tired to cover! The ref lays in the count and gets to 7 as Daniels gets to his feet and Punk is resting in the corner. Daniels goes and grabs Punk’s legs and pulls him out but Punk Jackie Chans and lands on his feet, boot to the gut and a DDT! He goes to the top rope but Daniels meets him up there and they trade punches. Punk gets the advantage and goes for the Pepsi Plunge but the Messiah grabs his foot and allows Daniels to get the advantage and go for a superplex! But the fans erupt as Colt Cabana comes running from the back and takes Messiah out with a lariat on the floor! He makes Messiah retreat to the back with a flurry of punches, leaving Punk and Daniels to go one on one! Punk hits some shots to Daniels’ gut and he stands up and hooks the arms, here it comes, PEPSI PLUNGE! He turns Daniels over and covers, 1…2…3!!

WINNER---CM Punk

Rise of the Independents loses another participant

Reported on October 18th, 2004 at 4:35 PM

Doug Williams has been forced to pull out of the Rise of the Independents tournament due to complications with his work Visa.  He is unable to wrestle outside of the UK for an indefinite amount of time so he has requested that he be pulled out of the tournament altogether.  Williams is said to have been going through some personal trouble as well which may have also contributed to his pulling out of the tournament.  A replacement has already been confirmed and that will be Alex Shelley.  Shelley will debut in 2 weeks against Williams' scheduled opponent Chris Hero.
