The 2018/19 NHL Thread!

Recommended Posts

First time in the expansion era that no division champion won their first round series. If I'm taking a stab at it -- Boston/NYI and St.Louis/San Jose for our conference finals, just as we all predicted back in October.

My gut says we get a Boston/St. Louis Cup Final. Binnington has completely transformed the Blues. To think 3 months ago people were going "Well time to blow it up and trade Tarasenko" and now people are going "Can they win it all?"

I want it to be Carolina or Columbus from the east and St. Louis from the west!

Ah well, this Isles/Canes series has been a massive disappointment but it was a fun season.

Can’t really complain, thought they were gonna be dogshit without Tavares.  At least they’ve got something to build on.

I'm just really happy to see Carolina is probably headed through to the Conference Finals. They've been a fun story this season, and it's cool to see Hamilton and Ferland getting a long playoff run.

The jerks are going to win it all!

Really hoping Columbus can pull off the comeback. I would hate for Boston to make it to the conference finals/cup finals/win the cup.

Carolina is so beat up, I'm worried how they'll play against Boston or Columbus. San Jose is starting to feel like the team out of the west. The top line for Dallas is lethal but I don't know about them matching up with the Sharks in a 7 game series. St. Louis' offense has looked very weak recently.

I'm hoping the Blues or Stars can advance in the west. Colorado would be nice, if only for the Flames to be able to say that they got beat out by a Cup Finalist, but the Sharks don't seem ready to let them get through.

Carolina or Columbus would be good out of the east. I find myself unable to cheer for the Bruins, the Hurricanes would be a great feel-good story, and Columbus getting to the Finals before possibly being demolished in the off-season would be good for the franchise. Even with a Cup win, I don't think Panarin or Bob stick around, and that Jarmo put all his chips on the table by not moving them at the deadline was a hell of a gamble that would be fun to see pay off.

Columbus has a lot of very good young pieces and if they can convince Duchene to at least stick around they won't be seeing too big of a drop off. But losing him, Panarin, and Bob would definitely set them back. The latter two seem as good as gone, but you never know what they do with Duchene since they gave up a bit to get him just a few months ago.

Wouldn't mind three of the teams remaining winning it all.  Which means a Bruins championship is guaranteed.

I don't even hate the Bruins like I do other Boston teams - but come on, that city has won enough to last their fans a lifetime.

I'm hoping for a St Louis Vs Carolina final. Binnington Vs The Bunch of Jerks would be a lot of fun.

For the first time in 25 years, Great Britain's men's team will be rubbing shoulders with the sport's elite at the Ice Hockey World Championship.

Britain sealed their place in this year's tournament - which starts in Slovakia on Friday - with a dramatic overtime win against Hungary in Budapest last year.

After years in the international doldrums, Britain will come up against giants of the sport - the likes of 26-time world champions Canada, the mighty United States and Olympic silver medallists Germany.

Canada and Olympic champions Russia will start as favourites, closely followed by Sweden and the USA.

At 22 in the world, Pete Russell's GB side are the lowest-ranked team in the championship and will be hoping to win one game, so what chance have they got in Slovakia?

So a World Cup of Ice Hockey and nobody cares about it?

The World Championships happen every year and are considered a fairly prestigious tournament. They tend to get downplayed a bit because they take place during the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but if the NHL doesn't go to the Olympics anymore, their organized World Cup of Hockey event will probably be considered the pinnacle of international hockey, but the World Championships are a close number two.

Rask's been amazing the last few games. I don't mean this last one necessarily because Carolina didn't challenge him way too much tonight, but the previous ones and the Blue Jackets series. It looks like Tuukka Rask from like 5 years ago. The sharks usually score a lot though so it wouldn't be easy for him to keep it going, I guess. Well, that's assuming they go through. The Blues could still win the whole thing.

Yeah Tuuka Rask has just been lights out. Hopefully the long layoff between now and the start of the Cup finals makes him lose some of that momentum.

Boston is just one of those very few teams that I can't help but hate for some reason. Though, I'm not much of a fan of the Sharks either, so if that's the final, I probably won't watch. If the Blues can right the wrong of game three and find their way into the Stanley Cup Final, I'll definitely watch though.

If the Leafs showed up to play in games 6 or 7, they could have been here :(

I'm hoping that St. Louis wins the cup. And then San Jose. And if neither of them, I hope something happens that they have to cancel the rest of the playoffs and award nobody as the winner this year.

Pros: David Backes finally gets to play in the Cup Final

Cons: Literally everything else about the Bruins

Also, San Jose-St. Louis feels like it's going 7.

So....free agency is a think! Shattenkirk got less money/term than I was expecting, was sad the Leafs didn't get him. BUT! They did get Marleau! Big contract, but I think he could do great things with Matthews, and it gives us the option of trading JVR for defensive help should we feel the need.

Also! Price signed his extension...in 2018/19 he's going to be making 10.5 for 8 years. He's the best (or at least top 3) goalie in the world...he's worth the money, but I can't help but feel they will be in cap hell by having that much money tied up in net.

I didn't see a topic for this so....

I used to buy the EA NHL games on the day of release every year - until I played last years game on the PS4. Something about it just wasn't appealing - especially in the menus when trying to play my favourite mode, Be A GM.

I heard this year's version is better, so I picked it up a few days ago. And it is better - the menus are more responsive and less of a pain in the ass to navigate. The actual game play is pretty fun too. Very smooth. I feel like I can score in a ton of different ways. Sniping it off the rush, deking around the goaltender, one timers, point shots. It's not a frustrating experience like last year - it's just fun.

The real reason for starting this thread is...I want to talk about my GM mode as the Leafs. I attempted to tank hard - the Jets took Bernier for a first, and I was able to unload a ton of guys and wound up with 4 first round picks and 4 second round picks, plus a bunch more later on. The team was pretty thin beyond, especially in goal with only Reimer and Garrett Sparks. I thought I had orchestrated the perfect tank job.

The hockey gods laughed at this thought.

Instead, despite not having a player score more then 21 goals or more then 60 points on the roster, the 2015/16 Toronto Maple Leafs would go on to win the division and only fall out of the playoff in the second round. The teams who had traded their picks away to the Leafs also finished strong - so despite having four picks in the first round, the earliest pick I had was 15th overall. I was not pleased.

When it was time for the draft, I knew that I needed to add an impact player. Edmonton was 1st overall (again?!), but willing to deal. I was able to package two picks in the first round plus a prospect to get the top pick - and with that, drafted Auston Matthews. My remaining picks were late in the first round, so I packaged them to move up to tenth, where I picked up Jake Bean.

The other big move came in free agency. I was unsure about committing to Reimer as my top goaltender, so I looked to see if anything was available on the block. Low and behold, the Ducks were willing to move 22 year old John Gibson - a goaltender with the potential to become elite. I sent them Kasperi Kapanen and a 2nd round pick in 2018, and then signed Anders Lindback to have a solid back up.

Going into year two, I've made some significant changes to the team, and some of the players have really grown. Already, Auston Matthews is 87 overall with the potential to be a franchise player. Gibson jumped from 86 overall at the time of the trade, to 89 overall in the preseason. Morgan Reilly and Jake Gardiner are both far and away the best defenders on the team, while Dion and Scott Harrington (from the Kessel deal) are a very good second pairing. And Nazem Kadri is 89 overall and should have a fantastic season paired with JVR.

I was asleep when the draft started, and I forgot to do this earlier in the day.

Welcome to the new season, everyone!

I'll edit in some more thoughts over the course of my Monday, but for now all i'll say is that MacKinnon better score ALL of the goals if we've passed up on Seth Jones to a team within our own division.

      -------------------------

      My draft day:

I woke up at 4am to go to the bathroom and decided to check Twitter to see who we'd drafted, dreaded the worst. Scroll back through tweets...Yup, MacKinnon. Dammit, I wanted Seth. What's this, you say?! Major trade? I'll stay awake for this. HOLY FUCKING SHIT CORY SCHNEIDER!!! At this point I probably did what you all did, which was dash to @strombone1 and wait. As I watched some media coverage, Holy F'n Shit was I ever NOT prepared for Nathan MacKinnon's lisp. Oh god Seth Jones is in our division I hate my life. Good lord, that is a WORLD CLASS lisp.
