Originally, I was going to go to the movies to watch The Fourth Kind. Changed my mind, and went with the "oldie but goody" approach of watching it from the comfort on my own laptop. I have to admit. I believed the hype. The trailers seemed reasonably believable. I looked forward to the "footage".
After watching the movie, I then did what I usually always do after I watch a movie "based on true events" and researched the "true" story of "Abbey Tyler". Lo' and behold it was all a lie. She never existed. The events of The Fourth Kind never happened, in any capacity. Universal created fake obituaries and websites in a viral marketing campaign for the movie.
I've been Blairwitched.
Families living in the city of Nome, Alaska have sued Universal studios citing that they have suffered real-life disappearances (though these are/were alcohol related) and Universal apparently poured salt on the wounds. Universal and some Alaskan news website settled on an agreement of $20,000 for the fake obituaries and archive articles.
Roger Ebert of Ebert and Roeper is reportedly crushed.
As am I.
