Especially given we don't have an oligarch or an Arab state backing us

Yes poor Liverpool, with backer John Henry worth $2.6bn, Ted, William and the rest of the Alfond's worth $1.7bn, John A Kaneb worth of $0.6m, Seth Klarman worth $1.5bn, Bruce Rauner worth $0.4bn and Tom Werner worth $0.7bn...  Sadly they are impoverished compared to their Saudi and Russian counter parts... :P

True they are worth a lot of money but they don't just throw money away. Mike Ashley has a networth of like 3 billion...doesn't mean anything as you can see with how little he gives a shit about Newcastle

We are pretty much ran as a self-sustaining club and often have sold to buy players bar the odd season when we've spent more then we've made.  FSG love the concept of spending within the club's means, FFP was a big reason why they invested. We've caught up via other means

Over the last 9 seasons, United have like a netspend of over 500 odd mil more then us. It helps they are a big brand commercially and can afford to do this.  We can't do a City and throw money at any problems we may have. And Chelsea again have had an advantage over the years of being able to spend a large amount of money.

You love a good TIFO video, pretty much explains it all. We may be worth a lot of money but we don't really spend massively in a season bar one or two seasons in the last handful. That and we're in a pandemic and with Bournemouth relegated we aren't gonna sell our players for silly money for a while

Oh I get it and understood and know, I just saw that line and wanted to take it massively out of context :D

FSG runs the Boston Red Sox exactly the same way. They're not afraid to spend a ton of money but they typically do it for only short spurts. They've won more World Series since they bought the team than any other team in baseball, and have largely done so with 4 completely different teams. There aren't a ton of parallels between the two sports, but a big thing in baseball is that you constantly keep a pipeline for the future if you want to run a self-sustaining team and it looks like that's the same mentality applied at Liverpool.

A club like Man City doesn't have to be "self-sustaining" because it's not the primary line of business for the owners. But for FSG they're a group created for the sole purpose of owning sports teams. Their owners are wealthy by any measure but not wealthy enough to be able to regularly run the club at a loss.

And it's an admirable way of building value in something as Liverpool is now a $2bn club, on a purchase price of $450m 10 years ago, that's not a bad return on investment at all.

in what way?  He has never been a proven goalscorer, and Bruce played a system which was successful given the limitations he has at Newcastle from a squad and an ability to bring other players in to supplement that squad perspective, Joelinton was successful in a way which he looked every bit the player he was at Hoffenheim butplayed alongside proven goalscorer in Kramaric and a good, in form talent in Belfodil.

I can't say I watched any Hoffenheim but I can't imagine his heat map for received passes was on the left touchline at the half way line like it was for us.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think he's that much of a player, but asking a striker to consistly score goals when he's getting the ball in positions that a left back from 1986 would class as a bit conservative is asking a lot.

Both Allan and James Rodriguez are having their Everton medicals today.

If they can get Doucoure in as well that's a big boost to their midfield

In the way that it'll actually be a midfield, rather than a strange collection of mediocre, useless and crocked? :P

Pretty much yeh ha! Doucoure and Allan behind Rodriguez would be such an improvement and you'd still having suitable options like Gomes in the squad.

Strengthen at centre back as well and I think you'll be in a decent position going into the season.
