He was quite good the first time round, wasn't he? Things haven't been great since then for him, though.

He was given a lot of time to get things right at Grimsby (i.e. he got four attempts at the Conference play-offs to get it right, which is unheard of in modern day football) but had created a fantastic team by the time our time came. Hopefully with the new owners about to be in place he's afforded the same opportunity since our squad is a fucking mess at the moment.

Wigan Athletic’s prospective takeover is off, with the League One club claiming that the Spanish bidders reduced their offer by almost 50%.

An offer fronted by the Leganes owner, Felipe Moreno, was accepted by the club’s administrators in September but the process had dragged on until Tuesday morning, when an official club statement revealed the news.

“As of 11am today, the administrators have broken off negotiations with the Spanish bidder,” the statement said. “The facts are that as late as Christmas Eve, the bidder indicated that they wanted to complete the deal immediately and had wired money from Spain to their UK solicitors.”

“This was confirmed as being received by their solicitors over the Christmas period. The sale contract was agreed, the documentation had been signed in relation to the assignment of the leases with the council (stadium) and college (training ground) and completion was planned to take place in between Christmas and New Year.”

The statement continued: “Over this weekend we received a letter from the bidder reducing the bid by almost 50%. This would not allow us to pay non-football creditors the required 25p in the pound to avoid further sanctions against the club.

“This would result in a 15-point deduction and would effectively relegate the club to League Two,” the joint administrators added. “The purchaser was insistent on offering the reduced price but was not prepared to conclude the deal unless the 15-point deduction was waived.

“Under the EFL insolvency policy, this is not possible and the deal is therefore unable to be concluded. We have informed the EFL and are now starting to talk to other bidders who have expressed interest and will provide an update when there is any definite news.”

Wigan have been in administration since the start of July, when a 12-point deduction relegated them to League One. News of a serious bidder appeared to give them a route out, but last month the EFL said it was still unable to sanction the deal.

It is another blow for the stricken club, who currently sit third from bottom in the League One table, two points from safety. The club have also been hit by a coronavirus outbreak, with their next two league fixtures already called off.

I need a drink after that.

1-0 up at leaders Lincoln completely against the run of play, give away a penalty which the goalkeeper saves. Hold on til the last minute then the goalie storms to the sideline and smashes their player to give away another penalty...then he saves again (from a different player to who took the first one) and we win 1-0. Insanity.

We might actually get promoted this year. Darren Moore is a genius.

The EFL’s salary cap in Leagues One and Two has been withdrawn following a decision by an independent arbitration panel.

The panel sat after a claim from the Professional Footballers’ Association that the EFL was in breach of regulations in introducing the cap, which it described as “unlawful and unenforceable”.

Clubs voted in August to implement a cap, set at £1.5m in League Two and £2.5m in League Two. The EFL said previous rules linking player-related expenditure to turnover would be restored.

“The EFL will now discuss the matter of financial controls and implications linked to this outcome at a series of meetings with its member clubs later this week,” it said.

The players’ union said: “The PFA welcomes the fact that the salary cap rules are automatically withdrawn and hopes to open constructive dialogue to agree reasonable and proportionate cost control measures for the future.”

The panel ruled that the cap was in breach of the Professional Football Negotiating and Consultative Committee’s constitution.

The PFA said: “Like everyone involved in football, the PFA wants to see sustainable clubs at all levels. We also recognise the huge economic pressure that clubs have come under due to the Covid-19 crisis. The PFA believes it is now in the best interest of the leagues, the clubs, and the players to work together and agree on rules that promote financial stability.”

We played against Hull today in a special kit designed by James Coppinger and his sons for our charity efforts with CALM - gold and white - and it commemorates Copps' 17 year career with us before he retires.

Hull's manager Grant McCann left us high and dry to join them, after stripping Coppinger of the captaincy and reducing his game time. They went 3-1 up today and were dominating but we got one back and then 15 minutes of added time happened due to an injury, so what happens?

Coppinger comes off the bench late and steps up to curl in a beauty of a free kick and make it 3-3. Beautiful.

I love him.

Another Doncaster Rovers manager has decided to leave the stability and comfort of our ranks to join a basket case.

Darren Moore is the new manager of Sheffield Wednesday, Andy Butler takes over at Rovers. Moore was linked with the job a month ago and, somewhat predictably, we have been awful ever since. Lost four of the last five and playing like we've no idea what to do. Makes sense now!
