The Carabao Cup will kick off the 2020/21 EFL season, with the first four rounds of the tournament to be played in September.

First-round fixtures are scheduled to take place on September 5 but could be moved due to potential clashes with international fixtures.

Rounds two, three and four will then be played on consecutive midweeks, starting on September 15/16.

Premier League sides will enter the Carabao Cup at either round two or three, depending on their 2019/20 league placing.

The draw for round one will take place on Sky Sports News on August 18. As with last season, it will be divided into northern and southern sections and will be unseeded.

The EFL has also confirmed two-legged semi-finals will no longer be played in the competition, with one-off matches determining which teams reach the final.

The sides drawn first in each semi-final will host the tie.

Manchester City have won the last three Carabao Cups, with their most recent success coming courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in March.

Carabao Cup 2020/21 Schedule:

  • Round one: September 5
  • Round two: September 15/16
  • Round three: September 22/23
  • Round four: September 29/30
  • Round five: December 22/23
  • Semi-finals: January 5/6
  • Final: February 28

You are the bus rail replacement of people.

Oh Newcastle have a relatively smooth path to the last 8. Nothing's guaranteed but I like the draw.

The Carabao Cup first round will see Barrow visit Derby for their first game in the competition since the 1971/72 season, while Newport will host Swansea in an all-Welsh tie.

Harrogate - who were promoted to the Football League for the first time in their history earlier this month - will make their debut in the Carabao Cup at Prenton Park, where they will take on Tranmere.

Championship play-off runners-up Brentford will begin their season at home to Wycombe, who won the League One play-offs last season.

There are several ties between former Premier League clubs, including Bolton hosting Bradford, with both sides now in League Two.

Stoke have been drawn at home to Blackpool, Sunderland will play Hull, Barnsley will host Nottingham Forest in an all-Championship affair and Charlton travel to Swindon.

The first round of the Carabao Cup is due to be played on Saturday, September 5, although this is also an international weekend, so some games may be rearranged.

Worth noting that the winner of this year's cup goes into UEFA's new Europea League Conference competition for next season as England's sole representative.

The English domestic season starts today!

Can't quite believe, after all this time off, we're actually playing too soon. Only had four weeks of pre-season training! I hope Blackburn don't trounce us.

A good game, we ran out of steam in the last 20 minutes but played really well in the second half up to that point. Blackburn bossed the first half completely and with better finishing would have been out of sight.

Lads, just so everyone is aware, if after signing James Rodriguez we get knocked out of the cup by Salford, I will be throwing myself into the Mersey. <_<

We're pretty much treating tonight as a training game to get 2nd stringers and new signings some game time.

Three of those players came through the youth academies at Nottingham-based clubs. Who knows which ones?

I'd guess Osborn, Robinson and... another
