Roster Depth Sicko No. 2

Recommended Posts

There's a lot of hype around the debut Black Country, New Road album (they're a bunch of 20 year olds from Cambridge/London who caught a lot of attention with a track called 'Sunglasses', which has even been reworked on the album with some lyrical changes. It's...post-rock? Experimental rock?)

I think it's good, I wasn't particularly blown away like others on the internet - but I still want to come back to it, even after the first few listens, with it occupying some space in my brain. I'm looking forward to what they can do over the next few years.

It's a flipping great album imo. Top 3 for the year so far (I'm on 70 odd albums). The only thing that doesn't quite do it for me is the sort of odd quiver the singer has on his voice. It feels... forced? Musically at absolutely slaps as far as Experimental Rock goes. :)

If anyone's into their heavy psych / garage rock, I highly recommend the new Psychdelic Porn Crumpets album. Quite a few bangers on it.

New Beach Bunny EP is pretty great.

It came out at the end of last year, but I've also been enjoying No Driver by I Love Your Lifestyle. I think you might dig that.

That I Love Your Lifestyle one is lovely stuff, and the Beach Bunny EP was good too, ill have to watch out for them in the future.

I optimistically bought tickets to see Beach Bunny in April at the end of last year...

Yeah I'm really digging this.

Also loving the new Goat Girl and The Weather Station albums. Feels like there's some really good stuff kicking about at the moment. I liked the Arlo Parks record, but it hasn't truly stayed with me.

My pal's record label also did their first physical release this week, so if anyone fancies supporting a very small start-up label, check out Another Country $$$$, 'GRIEF STRICKEN LISTED BUILDINGS' which is now streaming. Won't be for everyone.

They just had him in that "Re-United States" commercial during the Super Bowl too. What's more working class and will reunify people more than a drunk driving charge, Boss?

Currently digging:

Imposter by Miss Grit

Before Sunrise by Nana Yamato

Somewhere by Sun June

And a bit of a departure for me, Yellow River Blue by Yu Su, which is a cool electronic album. Also think the new Slowthai album is pretty good on first few listens.

I will add these to my listening piles.

Recent albums to catch my ear:

Imperial by Soen (leader from AOTY for me)
Shyga! the Sunlight Mound by Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
A Common Turn by Anna B. Savage
Death By Rock and Roll by The Pretty Reckless (saw them once, ten years back at Download and they didn't do much for me, but this album has surprisingly grabbed me) Posthuman by Camera

I started the Slowthai one and then got caught up on work calls, I'll have to give it a fresh listen but I wasn't that bothered by what I heard. The Pretty Reckless needs a fresh listen too, I heard one track off it and then got side tracked. Lots of new stuff there for me to try though.

Dark & Beautiful Secrets by Normandie (Swedish rock so I was bound to love it since Sweden make great music) and I Only Want To Live Once by John the Ghost (solo project by the frontman from The Maine) will be my contributions to the pile.

I way late on this, but Hospital Bracelet's debut is real good. It suffers from the problem where previous versions of some of the songs are better (Sober Haha Jk Unless in particular is just too slowed down for my taste), but the new stuff (especially Feral Rat Anthem and Summer Friends) is great.
