2021 MLB Season / 21-22 Offseason Thread

Mets have had so many injuries in the last week they’ve had three separate guys make their major league debut in the span of three days, two of whom were guys who had been in the minors for between 8-10 years.

They also had to call up every available position player on the 40 ready they were ready or not, including 22-year old outfielder Khalil Lee.  The book on him was that contact was a major issue.

He’s started his career 0-8, 8 Ks.  Normally I’d say I can’t feel bad for anyone getting a chance to play in the bigs but the poor kid hasn’t got a chance up there.

In the past week alone the Mets have had to place Pete Alonso, Michael Conforto, Jeff McNeil, Kevin Pillar, and Taijuan Walker on the IL.  They were already missing the best pitcher in baseball (deGrom), two other starting lineup guys (Brandon Nimmo and JD Davis), two key bench pieces (Luis Guillorme and Albert Almora), and Dellin Betances who, well, he's been washed for a long while.  But still.  That's 11 members of the Opening Day 26-man roster on the IL already.

And of the lineup regulars that remain, it's the three guys who have hit the least with big offseason acquisitions Lindor and James McCann both hitting below the Mendoza line, the latter of whom seemingly already benched after signing a $40 million contract this offseason.  Cameron Maybin, just acquired from the Cubs for $1, is the new #3 hitter.

Pain.

For now.  I’m kinda getting 2009 vibes where they had a loaded roster on paper but guys were going down left and right after a couple of months.  The replacements hung in there for a while before playing to their natural talent level and things went south from there.

Hopefully some of those guys can return before it gets too bad but several of those players are said to be “week to week”.

The Mets are onto their FIFTH string center fielder with three getting hurt in the past two weeks.  Of those three, Kevin Pillar was hit in the face with a 94 MPH pitch and the other two (Albert Almora and Johenswy Vargas) had violent collisions with the CF wall, Almora getting concussed and Vargas separating his shoulder.

Now tonight, Noah Syndergaard was scheduled to throw four innings in a rehab start tonight.  He was throwing 94-95 out of the gate, which quickly turned into 89-92 and him being shut down after one inning with soreness in his surgically repaired elbow.

Getting rid of the Wilpons was supposed to be the dawn of a new era and washing away the misfortune of the last couple of decades.  What have Mets fans done to deserve this?
